We booked a room with twin beds. However, the room had a double bed plus an overhead bunk bed and was very small. Upon complaint we were told that an internet booking of a room with twin beds was not possible. Can't recommend.

Yes the decor is dated, yes it does look a bit like it used to be grander and has fallen into genteel disuse, but everything works and boy do they try to make you feel welcome. And the food in the evening is superb. I spent two nights there, stuck in my room with a great view onto the river whilst the typhoon hit Kochi, so had lunch there too. I was lucky as my room had such a view, not all of them do and it was quiet, large, with one of those bathroom in a box you get in some hotel. There is a small 7 eleven next door and they have a gift shop and ice cream parlour in the hotel, as well as some conference room and karaoke lounge. Lunch and breakfast are buffet style, so you are bound to find something to make you happy even if the setting for lunch and breakfast is a bit school hall like. For each evening meal In the restaurant upstairs, I was given an English version of the menu (how they did it, not sure, google translate?) printed nicely and prettily just for me. The seared bonito (a Kōchi speciality) is to die for, they even put up a demonstration for the kids they took me along to of how the chef prepares it. Not sure if they do that all the time or if that was just to entertain the guest stranded by the typhoon. But even without any other common language than google translate and one lovely young girl who spoke some English and was roped in to serve me the first day, they were all delightful and trying very very hard to give the best service possible in trying circumstances which as far as I am concerned is far more important and telling than faded wall paper (which in this warm and humid weather probably fades within a couple of months). And then the manager even drove me to the train station. As it turns out the location is also very convenient if there is no typhoon.

The hotel is easy to find, a short walk from Kochi train station. It has seen better days but is clean and comfortable. The mattress in my single room is the most comfortable I have slept on in three weeks of travelling Japan. The staff speak very little English but we managed to communicate the essentials. Breakfast, included in the room price, was of good quality and variety. I booked the room at a special rate through Agoda, but even at normal rates it is good value. The only downside had nothing to do with the hotel: loud hideous singing somewhere nearby at 4 am.

I was staying in Kochi for three nights, unfortunately none of the hotels had rooms available for all three nights so I had to book two hotels instead which isn’t ideal. I hate moving around, packing and unpacking, it’s rather tiring. I stayed one night in Kochi Hotel, then two more nights at Richmond Kochi hotel. Check In Date Spring 2018 Location Kochi, Shikoku Style Budget hotel Room Superior Double Room Non-Smoking I stayed one night in the Superior Double Room which is the more expensive choice, there is a cheaper version which is the semi double room which is standard size in Japan. The room is obviously smaller and the bed is definitely alot smaller, being only at 120cm wide, I find it too small for two person, unless it’s an adult and a child. Once I entered the room, I realize how spacious it was (in Japanese standard), there is an actual corridor with room to hang up my coat and take off my shoes. Lots of hotel in Japan does not have this privilege, most of the time you open the door and the bed is two steps away, and there is no room to open up your suitcase or space for your shoes. There were space to walk around and stretch out your legs, plenty of spaces to open your suitcase and they evem provided a luggage rack which isn’t necessarily provided in Japanese budget hotel. There was a table with two chairs near the big window, not that I ever sat on the chairs in hotel but I did use it that evening when I was eating my fruits that I bought at the Familymart (Japanese convenience store).. It was nice to have this as a bonus, at least spaces to put my handbag, snacks or even guidebooks. There was a small fridge that needed to be turned om to use and TV that only have Japanese channels. Lots of electric sockets around the room which I liked and I loved the conveniences of the light switches sop close to the bed so I don’t need to get up to turn off/on the lights. Bathroom Like most budget hotels in Japan, the bathroom is VERY small, the size of this bathroom is adequate with the wash basin being ‘normal’ size and not those tiny ones designed to fit in a small place or above the toilet. There are clothes hook behind the door, room to turn around to get change. The only complaint I have is how much the shower curtain stinks from being wet all the time since no windows in the bathroom whicvh is common in japan’s budget hotels. So I would avoid to even touch that shower curtains unless they change them every so often Bathroom Like most budget hotels in Japan, the bathroom is VERY small, the size of this bathroom is adequate with the wash basin being ‘normal’ size and not those tiny ones designed to fit in a small place or above the toilet. I was put up at this hotel for a conference next door at the community center. The lobby is spacious, the staff were courteous, and made attempts to communicate using English. Access to the room floors can be an issue as there are only 2 elevators (plus 1 more for access to the function rooms and top floor restaurant) servicing 22 floors. The room is clean and fairly spacious by Japanese standards, and everything was in working order, though I do get a feel that most things are a bit dated. As it is centrally located, access to the tram station is only a few hundred metres away, the airport express bus stop is a few more away. There are taxis waiting at the entrance during the day. Buffet breakfast spread is great and the Japanese food is delicious. I did not check out the gym facilities, as we were walking about 5 to 10kms daily exploring Kochi.

If you have ever stayed in a Dormy Inn, you would know what to expect and that’s part of the charm really. It’s always with a lovely little Onsen (split by Male and Female), it offers a fantastic Ramen in the evening, and it’s almost always well located in the city. I generally always try to make a stay in a Dormy on my visits to Japan, just to enjoy the lovely Onsen at night. To be fair, rooms are on the smallish side and comfortably rather than luxuriously appointed, but for the price and perks, it’s a fantastic bargain.

The hotel is located in the center of Kochi city. From the hotel, Kochi castle and Kochi castle history museum, shopping streets, Ryoma's birth place, good local restaurants are all walking distance. You can take trams to go to the castle if you are tired of walking, the tram stop is just 30 sec away from the hotel. If you want to go to Katsurahama and Ryoma museum, you will need to take a bus. The bus station to Katsurahama is also 30 sec walk. Even though the hotel is located in the center of the city, you don't hear noise in the night. Ah, yes you are not in Manhattan NY, so the city is not busy in the night. After 9PM, there are few cars outside. The room is small, just like NY hotels, you don't have space to open your suite case on the floor, but i could manage it. Breakfast area is also small and it gets crowded if you want to take it at 6:30, but they don't stay long, so you will find a seat if you wait 5-10 minutes, while you are taking food from buffet area. I think there is an option not to include breakfast in your plan. There are not so many breakfast alternatives around the hotel, but you can just buy bread and coffee at the convenience store in the first floor. The best thing in this hotel is that they offer FREE smartphone during your stay. Yes, it is free of charge. You can even call international. you can take the smartphone outside and look up maps, search interesting points, and restaurants. it is just 10 minutes Kochi station, if you have a big suite case, you might want to take a cab or a tram, but if you have only carry-on bags, it is easy flat walk from the station. This hotel is better than the hotels in front of Kochi station. very conveniently located.

Knowing that most activity in any Japanese city occurs around the railway station, I chose the Comfort Hotel next to Kochi station. However, Kochi is not a large place, so apart from a decent nearby supermarket, some small shops and a couple of restaurants there was nothing much of interest in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Next to the railway station is a bus station from where one may catch cheaply priced buses to several sites of interest, such as Kochi Castle and nearby there is also a tram stop for city sightseeing. First impressions of the Comfort Hotel were that it was very clean and organised and that impression never faltered. My room was immaculate. The bathroom had bright lighting and all the surfaces were glossy white, glass, mirrored or chrome, all highly polished and shiny and the towels were bright white. Lovely! The bed was comfortable with high quality linens and pillows, so it was a good night’s sleep and this was one of the biggest Japanese mid-priced hotel rooms I have stayed in. They are usually minuscule with no place to store luggage or to place a laptop. The receptionists were rather vague and spoke no English. They were confused about my prepaid reservation even after I showed them my booking confirmation and reservation. Eventually, after much frantic tapping on a computer keyboard, one of the girls smiled a broad grin and so it became clear that my reservation had been found. It took a while though. A free coffee and tea set up is available for most of the day in a lounge adjacent to the lobby and, like everything in the hotel, was spotlessly clean and was maintained tidily. Breakfast was limited, but excellent. For Westerners they was cereal as well as Danish pastries, croissants, scrambled egg and sausages, fruit slices, yogurt and cereal. Additionally, there was a good selection of Japanese breakfast fare. I was able to take a fast, reliable, air-conditioned bus to the airport. The cost was only JPY ¥720.00 (approx. £5.25 one-way) versus approximately £30.00 for a taxi for the 25-minute journey. The bus departed and arrived at exactly the times stated on the scheduled given to me in the hotel as one has come to expect in Japan.

When I first booked this hotel, I was a bit worried, as it seems like it is a bit far away from Kochi station. But soon, as I walked along, and as soon as I reached the hotel and was given a local town map, I realised that the location is very good. It is near to Hirome market, a walking distance to Kochi castle and also, if you happen to be here during Sunday, the Sunday morning market is just a few steps away from their main entrance. Breakfast, though simple, was very delicious, especially their rice cake, super super delicious, wifi was good and room was clean. Though the front desk was not able to communicate with good ENglish, nevertheless, they tried their best to assist and with Google translate, language becomes easier. I would like to specially highlight the front desk in charge person on the first nite I checked in, Mr. Shinmichi Yokogawa, who had been giving me some assistance as I left something at Takamatsu hotel and he has made a few calls to help with the arrangement. Appreciate his help and positive and always ready to help attitude. Thanks, Yokogawa-San. Wifi is working effectively in the room. One more highlight, they provide a free drink in the evening to room guest, beer, tea...

While walking the Shikoku Ohenro pilgrimage, we stayed here for three nights. Hotel is about 7 minutes walk from Kochi station, 5 minutes walk from Kochi’s famous Hirome Ichiba where you can sample delicious tataki (seared bonito sashimi) and many other foods at reasonable prices. This hotel costs half as much as other hotels called by the tourist information center. WiFi worked great. 24- hours coin laundry is 2-3 minutes walk away. An inexpensive but delicious yakitori-ya is near the coin laundry.
