8km from Kosugi Dermatology ClinicI came across this randomly while googling for modern minshuku in Hokkaido. I've never been to Toyama and this was a great place to check out a simple type of life. The manager is responsive by email and was kind enough to wait for me for a late night arrival. The lodging is renovated with modern kitchen and bath keeping some original elements like the 90yo structure beams. The small Tatami sitting room facing the river is such a cute spot for a tea. The kitchen is fully stocked, microwave oven, chic amenities, a nice selection of welcome dried fruits and Japanese sweets. I think I saw less than ten people in the immediate area and there were no tour buses descending on the quiet streets and bridges during my stay. The seafood market for some local catch is about 20min walking away. Many businesses were closed for a holiday so dining options were limited closeby. I randomly visited a "snack bar" for dinner in the Tatemachi area and they were very nice and it had a warm local vibe. I was thinking the local sento would be super old school. It's pretty bare bones but doesn't have the wooden bandai and Mt Fuji mural. The water is super hot which was nice for a rainy day. There is some hip shops/restaurants in the area but so far they blend in nicely. Hopefully this won't turn into Disney-fied nightmare. The nights were nice and quiet with the occasional fishermen setting out on boat. This would be a good place to stay a while if you have to do some big thinking, reading or writing project. Wonderful visit.
