0.5km from La BonbonniereWhile visiting Toulouse we paid a visit to the red brick Boutique Hotel Grand Balcon, with its large iron balcony overlooking the Place du Capitole, and once home for many of the early pilots for Aéropostale (Now French airmail service). Of this charming 1930's hotel only the main entrance remains the same, with its original multicolored warn mosaic tile floor. Today the hotel has a completely new avant-garde look in grays and white with stainless steel and leather, thanks to architect and designer Jean-Philippe Nuel. The staff were very friendly and full of local knowledge, explaining to us with pride about the Hotels connections to history, we spent quite some time looking at all the memorabilia. The hotel keeps the past alive with black-and-white photos of the Aéropostale aviation pioneers on the wall of the hotel's lounge. Back in the 30's the Florida cafe in Place du Capitole was very popular with these aviators from the hotel Grand Balcon and Matadors from a local bull ring. Legend has it that these young pilots would dancing the tango in the hotel’s dining room, and then carrying their lady friends up the stairs so that three spinster owners of the hotel would only hear one set of steps on the stairs. From the lobby of the Hotel it is only a short distance to the restaurants in Place du Capitole at the end of the street, and the Capitol metro station in Charles de Gaul square, where many different events taking place like the farmer’s market, flea market, exhibits, etc. TIP: The hotel is on a restricted road which makes it difficult to arrive in a hire car, so take a cab from the airport.
