San Gimignano has its special spell at night - so worth not doing a day trip, but staying there over night. Palazzo al Torrione is the ideal location for this: it is located right on the walls of the old town of San Gimignano, so has a nice view across the surroundings, but is also well located for an evening stroll through the streets of the old town. The only difficulty is to get there by car to unload suitcases, as the streets are pretty steep and narrow, but with the help of our landlady, we made it. The Palazzo has been recently renovated in a very charming way - the rooms are modern, but with a traditional touch. The owners are lovely and always available for any questions or help. And the breakfast was probably one of the best we had throughout our entire trip through Tuscany. Fresh fruit, cheese, bread with olive oil, croissants,... and the best fried egg ever.

Pierluigi and Marzia are wonderful hosts. They are warm, welcoming and genuine. They both were great at offering laces to visit, suggestions for good local restaurants, cooking classes and anything else you wanted to know about the area. The building is very old (15th century?) and they have been turning the rooms into small apartments. Our 1 bedroom apartment was comfortable and worked well for us.

went with two girlfriends ahead of my wedding for some planning. We had three of the four rooms, all of which were large and immaculately clean. Beds were comfy and showers were spotless. Location is excellent, very close to car park 3 ( which in San Gim means you have close access to getting inside the walls!) Its up two floors, so be aware you will be carrying your luggage up ( although the staff were more than willing to help) but there is no lift ( it's an old building obv.) my friends experienced some noise outside from the restaurants below, but i can't say i had any issue. There is a kitchen and lounge area, but no milk so be aware that if you want milk or english breakfast tea, bring your own. No big deal at all though, as there's a fridge available to store whatever you wish. All in all a lovely place to stay, and would highly recommend if you want a non hotel style of accomodation.

This is the most unique and special place we stayed in during our trip through Tuscany! I mean, when do you get to stay inside a town wall? Naturally the old town center is only a few steps away. There are about 5 parking spots on the property (for an extra fee), but there are also plenty parking places around, due to the many tourists. The parking fee for a spot on the property is slightly lower though. Already entering through the gates gives you a feeling of arriving in a dreamy world of its own. The holiday flat we stayed in was super spacious, consisting of a little entrance room, a very spacious kitchen/ living room area, a huge bed room divided into two parts (with one double bed and a single bed) and a rather big bathroom with a bath tub. Hint to get water for those that are not familiar with the system (as I was, luckily I had a smart friend with me): turn the temperature controller once to the hottest so the flow heater starts. The windows of our room where facing towards the street, but with closed windows it was quiet inside the apartment. Right in front of the window was a bench, where the old Italian men would gather right away in the morning, which gave it a real authentic Tuscan feeling. Keep in mind that you are staying inside a wall, so if you are looking for a light-flooded place, this is not yours. If on the other hand you like a back to the old times, rustic, minimalistic style then this it. The staff was very friendly and helpful and spoke just fine English. We didn't need their assistance after the check-in, so I can't say how easy or hard it is to get a hold of them if needed. I haven't seen them around though after check-in. Breakfast is as far as I understood not offered, but you could either use the kitchen for self catering or go to one of the many cafes nearby. Wifi worked mainly in the kitchen / living room, which didn't bother us though. It gives you a break from technology when getting ready for bed. All in all this place is giving you a feeling of the old times far away from technology (even thought here's a TV available).

Palazzo San Lorenzo is a wonderful haven in Colle di Val d' Elsa. The restaurant is exceptional but a reservation is vital as they seem to have many big groups coming through. Cane who checked us in, was fantastic answering all our queries and providing all the necessary info to get around the town. There are a few bays outside the hotel for parking but if those are taken there’s free parking 100m from the hotel which is open 24 hours. We parked there two nights when there was no parking outside the hotel and the rental car was fine. We didn’t get the opportunity to use the Spa and Wellness centre located in this hotel during this trip. Be aware that if you don’t have a spa access room you need to pay for each entry. The bathrooms are equipped with jetted tubs which made for a glorious bath. The hotel has many beautiful sculptures, paintings and crystal vases displayed in public areas. The breakfast is served in a sunroom with a glass ceiling which makes for a magnificent start in the morning. This is a great base for visiting Siena and San Gimignano. The glass lift connecting the old and new towns of Colle di l Val d'Elsa is simply amazing. Would definitely stay here again if we are in that part of the world again.
