This is a hostel, and therefore facilities are more basic than that of a hotel eg our room was not cleaned on the second day of our stay, although we did have a sea view room with private bathroom. The one important consideration about staying here is its location. It is situated on Mukaishima Island (向島) which is a ten minute ferry ride from the town of Onomichi. It then requires a taxi ride from the ferry port to get to the hostel. The route there goes through a neighbourhood of shipyards, away from shops and restaurants - which means taxi rides again if you wish to go out to eat once you arrive at the hostel. For travellers relying on public transport, this is really quite out of the way. The hostel staff readily agrees to book taxis for guests, but one does feel quite cut off.

A very interesting island. We went here in the morning before going to the Hiroshima tour. This was an absolute surprise, because we thought the Hiroshima tour would be all dour and serious, but the tour of the island balanced it all. The Island has a centuries old temple and a traditional village where you can buy various products of the island. Because we were already hungry as it was lunchtime, we regret not joining the group that hiked all the way up to a hilltop. We missed the most interesting part of the tour. Would give this another trip when we get the chance. The tour guide, Taeko, was very good and detailed in here descriptions and explanations, and was an interesting guide.

We were booked a night's stay at Suminoe ryokan enroute the Shimanami Kaido. It is approximately a 35 km ride from Onomichi to Suminoe ryokan which we made in approximately 4.5 hours (novice riders) with a (sit down) coffee break on the way. The ryokan was fairly easy to find. We had wifi with us and written instructions. The shimanami kaido is fairly well marked with a blue line on the road that maps the shortest route. After arriving at Ikuchijima island via the bridge, we followed the blue line for a further 7 km (signs on streets re number of kms left to Imabari which is the final destination) and then stopped to check google maps. The ryokan was a short detour to the right from a T junction arriving at the seafront. There are no English characters to identify the ryokan but on entering the ryokan, there are big banners with the names of each (lead) guest that is due to arrive on the day. There is a bell to ring as there is no reception area and a lovely staff will come to greet you. Most of the staff are older women and they are very hospitable and warm. They are all able to communicate in basic English and sign language gets you the rest of the way. Shoes are kept on shelves before entering the establishment. Slippers are worn in the ryokan. The rooms are on various floors and are fairly large but slightly dated and worn. The rooms are very clean. There is free wifi with fairly good connection. There is a private, small toilet, but no private shower. This did not bother my friend and I as we had been in quite a few onsens prior to this stay. The public onsen (gender segregated) is basic and bare but sufficient, located on the ground floor. When I went for a morning bath, the lights were still off and the onsen deserted, but the bathtub was filled with fresh water. There are public washing machines for use (free, I think). The yukata was lovely but quite starchy. Stairs are quite steep and may not be suitable for less agile, older travellers. Dining is in private rooms with a hostess who serves you for the night. The food was some of the best we have had on the trip. Breakfast was also a delight (and much needed for the ride). Breakfast is only served from 8 AM onwards (most other establishments started earlier). We liked our stay but if novice riders are riding under time pressure on the 2nd day (we were trying to catch a train by 1 pm from Imabari as that was what was booked for us), I would advice staying in the next island as the 2nd half of the ride is definitely more difficult.
