Good variety of juices, breads, fruit, cold cuts, cheeses, teas. Beautifully presented. The coffee was good. The hotel is some distance from the city centre but there is a tram stop close by, as well as a selection of shops and restaurants. Room was quiet and had a balcony. There is some free - but not exclusive - parking at the hotel, or you can park underground (there is a charge). Staff were helpful. English is spoken. It was extremely hot and there is no air-con. No safe in the room. Use of the underground car park requires you to borrow a key from reception every time and reception closed at 9pm every evening. Wifi was very slow.

The location of the hotel is about 10-15 Km outside of the main Freiburg town. The hotel staff is friendly but the property itself appears to be divided in the old and new wing( we were given rooms in what looked liked the old wing). It’s a G+2 property. If you travelling in the summer months, you should be aware that this place can get really hot and this Hotel does not have air conditioning or fans in the rooms!!!! Very very uncomfortable. We have had to sleep with the windows/ door on the balcony open. A party on the ground floor ( a flr below our room ) made sleeping even more difficult. So in a nutshell, the property is outside the main city and rooms have no air conditioning. The latter has been a real bummer

All the shared facilities were clean. A well stocked supermarket within a couple of hundred meters and the boarding house's modern, well maintained kitchen make this ideal for a self catering stay.

MY wife and I stayed at Hotel Zum Schiff for 6 nights over the Christmas period, we were visiting family in the area and the location was ideal. Locating the hotel was easy and there is ample parking, both underground beneath the hotel, and above ground opposite the hotel. A local bus service passes the hotel, with a stop directly outside the hotel, ideal for guests without a car or those who would rather not drive into the city. The hotel is very clean and the staff extremely friendly. Rooms are a good size and very comfortable. There is a restaurant on-site which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant was closed for the Christmas holiday, but as we had already arranged to have our Christmas dinner in nearby Hinterzarten, this was not a problem for us. There is a sauna in the hotel and a garden area, also a comfortable and pleasant bar area. The hotel bar and restaurant appeared to be popular with the locals, which is always a good sign, although this did mean that the car park was very often full. The Hotel Zum Schiff is a lovely hotel and ideally positioned for visiting Freiburg and the Black Forest area. My wife and I enjoyed our stay so much that we have already booked to stay again in March, this time we will be celebrating our 40th Wedding Anniversary.

We are going to have a triple room and the room is large. If you bring a child, the big bed can sleep three people. The capsule coffee and minibar are free, with water/cola/beer/juice and chocolate, and the added value is high. The hotel is in a good location. Go out 20 meters to the right and go to the light rail line and then turn right. Walk 50 meters to the Freiburg Concert Hall. The color of the exterior wall lights changes very well at night. Continue to walk 100 meters to the right, you can see the famous Martin Gate. The water supply tank along the road can also be seen.

As other reviewers have stated this hotel is on several floors and there is no lift so if you find stairs difficult, you should bear this in mind. However, although we were quite prepared to lug our suitcases up to our room on the second floor ourselves, the male receptionist on duty when we arrived, insisted on carrying them up for us. We viewed the stairs as a good exercise opportunity – particularly after over-indulging in the excellent breakfasts! The hotel ran like a well-oiled machine. Everything in the room worked, and the various staff on duty seemed committed to providing a good service. Particularly impressive was the attention paid to keeping the breakfast buffet well-stocked. For the size of the hotel there was a very wide selection of meats and cheeses etc, and my favourite Bircher muesli which was homemade. The breakfast room is quite small and during our stay it seemed to be that the earlier you came, the less crowded it was. On our first morning the rush hour seemed to be about 9.30 am – when we took the last table available. There was a radiator in our room which we only needed to have on low during our visit and we noted the air-conditioning unit on the wall for use if necessary at other times.

The hotel is very close to the old city cathedral and the shopping mall downstairs is very convenient. The front desk clerk was very kind and reminded us that we can buy a two-day parking ticket for 27 Euros, which is more cost-effective than 19 Euros/day. There are Chinese, Western, and Japanese food around.

Just on the edge of Freiburg, the addition is like a development zone. The gas station at the entrance of the hotel is very convenient for self-driving. The hotel is super new and the bathroom bedding is very new. Also very clean. At the time of check-in, the beauty at the front desk said that we could not use the existing bed with our children (6 years old) (but we have no problem in other hotels in Germany). Plus 20 euros gave a room with a sofa bed. To be honest, the sofa bed is very difficult to sleep, and finally our family of three still sleeps in a bed. If you are eating near the hotel, recommend a restaurant called Die Kantina next to the gas station, which is delicious and not expensive. It is not necessary to go to the city. You can buy some food and drink at the gas station. The breakfast was good and the scrambled eggs were amazingly hard. Everything else is perfect. In short, self-driving preferred. It takes 2 hours to watch the small town of Freiburg.

Although the hotel is awkward to find (Sat Nav coped admirably) it is a nice traditional Gasthaus with a popular biergarten. We arrived early so were able to leave the car and walked into town for a late lunch. We were quite tired by the time we returned to our rooms on the first floor as it is a good 20 minutes into the old town. Reasonable sized and clean rooms on the first floor (no lifts) with traditional furniture and adequate en-suite facilities. We sat in the biergarten and had reasonably priced beer (4Euro for 50cl) but went inside the restaurant/bar to eat - too many smokers! The meal was reasonably priced and very pleasant with no complaints - empty plates! Breakfast was good, plentiful and varied in the usual German fashion. Our overall feeling was that we enjoyed our stay but felt it was expensive for what it was (Euro 185 for two rooms inc breakfast), even though the parking was free!

The hotel and restaurant are, for lack of a better word, traditionally decorated. The room was immaculate. The cathedral bells are very loud. And so are the occasional revelers. Thankfully there are ear plugs on the night stand. (Some rooms are on the square, others are on the street opposite.) The breakfast was delicious and the restaurant charming. The restaurant staff were attentive and friendly. (I don't have special needs and eat everything.) Hotel and restaurant staff speak English rather well. The hotel staff went above and beyond the call of duty in helping out with storm related travel changes. Well done!

The Central Hotel is ideally placed on the edge of the lovely Old Town in Freiburg - not exactly in it but only fifty metres away from the edge. An easy flat 10-15 minute walk from the railway station and bus terminus. The main shopping centre was right there too. We stayed there for two nights last week. The reception was friendly and helpful. Public areas are pleasant and well-furnished. Our bedroom was quiet, functional, quite comfortable and reasonably sized, with air-con and heating. The bathroom was small but well-designed, with a very good shower and rather small but efficient cubicle. The dining room was tastefully furnished with plenty of space between tables. The breakfast buffet was truly exceptional in the continental style - no UK-type sausages, beans and other Great British Breakfast offerings but an expansive choice of continental breakfast dishes including fruits, yogurts, cereals, cheeses, cold cuts, bacon, eggs, breads, pastries and jams. One of the best of its type that I have ever seen. Assessing value for money, this hotel deserves a 'five' rating. This will be our Freiburg hotel of choice in future.

Superb location, close to every attraction and right on the edge of the pedestrian district. My sister and I loved this hotel. The beds were super comfortable and rooms provided every amenity possible. Service and large comprehensive, delicious breakfasts (open until 10 a.m.) are just the beginning of this amazing small hotel. It was pristine in its cleanliness, and the staff from front desk to breakfast servers were polite, helpful and genuinely sought to provide 5 star service. Innkeeper Eiko Schulthesis went beyond the call in helping us with travel plans and suggestions to make our stay perfect. As a seasoned traveler staying in great hotels, I would rank this one right up there with the best. While there is no mini-bar, there are wine shops and a wonderful Aldi's a half block away where all sorts of local wines and spirits can be purchased.

This hotel is classy. The rooms are beautiful, but not large - it is an old structure after all. But the interior is all new and sparkling clean. I slept very well in the quiet room in the firm but cozy bed. The receptionist was efficient and very friendly. The buffet breakfast is superb - try not to overeat! Parking is a bit tricky, though. You can enter the pedestrian zone through the Schwabentor (a gate of the old city defenses) and stop to get your luggage to the hotel. But to park your car you need to get out of the pedestrian zone onto the busy Schlossbergstrasse (this is a bit complicated, so ask the hotel reception) and then you need to drive to the Schlossberggarage (the lower bridge once you enter the garage exit on your right; a bridge leads over the Schlossbergstrasse into the garage house). From there it is about a 5 minute walk back to the hotel. The walk is through a beautiful old street. Highly recommended!

My husband and I travel often and have had all kinds of hotel experiences. The Alex Hotel is the most unique and wonderful one we have ever stayed at. Our impression began before we even arrived through email exchanges about restaurants and activities. Alex and his staff were always quick to respond, very pleasant and gave helpful suggestions. On check in day, Alex called to see what time we would arrive and offered to make us a dinner reservation. When we finally showed up, Alex was at the desk to greet us with a smile, showed us where to park and even allowed us to store our bikes in the hotel. There were water and apples in the room for us and he made sure everything was to our liking. We shared with him that we wanted to taste the local wines and he offered to do a tasting for us there in the hotel with his favorites. When we returned with cheese and bread and the apples from the room, he cut them up and plated them for the tasting. We had a delightful conversation about his journey since taking over the hotel and remodeling it. The attention to details is impressive in both the room and the common areas. We liked the wines so much, Alex contacted the wineries and organized the shipments to our home. Above and beyond what I would have expected! All three restaurants Alex suggested (Primo, Wolfshöhle and Lollo) were very different from each other and delicious! On top of all of that, the hotel is perfectly located near the old town, but is still in a quiet location. I can't recommend this hotel enough!!

We stayed at the Green City Hotel Vauban while visiting the area. The hotel itself is very clean and modern. The rooms are a bit small by American standards. However, the beds were very comfortable and the closet was a decent size. The bathroom was nice and the shower had great water pressure. However, the glass doors were a bit awkward and it was hard to shower without getting the bathroom floor all wet. The hotel provided liquid hand soap that doubled as body gel and shampoo. The hair dryer in the room was excellent. Very powerful. While the instructions for the room stated that the room is climate controlled, we did not get the temperature to change either hotter or colder. We did not find any way to change the temperature and we never asked as it was about 60 degrees outside and we did not really need heat or air conditioning. I am not sure if there truly was air conditioning. That would be a concern in the summer. We did not have breakfast at the hotel as it was 12 euros a person and if you wanted hot eggs prepared it was additional money. We ate breakfast elsewhere as there are plenty of bakeries and cafes to go to. There was one bakery and a grocery store right across the street from the hotel. Also, the hotel is across the street from the tram and bus stop, If the windows are open in the room, it can be noisy. The hotel staff was very friendly and spoke English fairly well. When I asked about how to get to certain places, other than in town, they needed to look things up on the computer, but they willingly did so. The wifi did not work great i n our room. It worked well in the lobby. The area of Vauban is very nice, but about a 5-10 minute tram ride from town. The hotel gives each guest a complimentary tram/bus pass for the duration of the stay. This was a great help as the rides can get very expensive. We were happy to be away from the noise and traffic of Freiburg city center and taking the tram back and forth was very easy and enjoyable. This hotel was very good value for the price and I would definitely recommend it.

We stayed her for a 5 days Wedding Anniversary trip in September. We received a lovely welcome, a free upgrade and a lovely surprise when we entered our room (see photo). The Hotel is well placed and easily found from the Railway and Bus Station (we came from Basel on a Flixbus service who also do a coach transfer direct to Basel Airport). The City centre is easily walked to from this Hotel. The breakfast room is a little small for the number of rooms at this Hotel but we always were provided with a table. It just gets a little cramped around the self-service area when its busy. There was plenty of continental breakfast choice and the food was of a good quality and taste. We enjoyed it every day. It would be a nice touch if there was a little background music added to the experience. We had a room on the third floor overlooking the park. It was a large room and had a great separate bathroom which was huge with a walk-in shower, separate bathtub and his & hers washbasins. Towels were refreshed every day if you wanted. The air-conditioning unit was quiet and it was needed as it was quite hot when we visited (22-28 degrees). The beds were comfortable although they did get a little too hot for us. I needed an extra pillow which the Hotel were happy to accommodate. All the staff, including the room servicing, breakfast and reception teams were very friendly even though we are English (that's a joke by the way!). They helped us with information and were happy to have a chat. We could get tickets for the trains, trams and buses from the Reception staff. The public transport system has three circular zones. The central zone is free and covers most of the city centre and out to about 4 kms. We went to Lake Titisee one day and, as this is outside the centre zone it cost us 13 EUR for the two of us to get a return journey on the train. There were free snacks, sweets and water at the reception whcih is a really nice touch. The checkout time is noon and I believe you can leave your luggage there if you want to stay a bit longer. All in all we had a thoroughly good time at this Hotel and were well looked afterwards. The staff are genuinely interested in making your stay a goog one. I would come here again and would recommend it to others.

Very spacious room, with a balcony opening up to the majestic mountains just a road away from you. Quiet and a little away from the city. Must must stay here to experience the mountains. A small personal bakery next door is cute and an added star for the stay here. Only challenging concern is the walk from the train station to the hotel. But that's about the negatives. Rest all are must experience. Stayed here august 2017. Also do check the check in timings, the desk manager is not available throughout the day.

We picked this hotel because we thought it would be quiet as it was not on a main street. We had asked for a quiet room away from the lifts as my partner has extremely sensitive hearing. Well we arrived at 12.30 for the 3pm check in. I said that I knew we were early but we just wanted to park up and go into the town. It took her a while to serve us as she was on the phone. We filled in the necessary check in forms. She said that the room was not ready and we said that that was fine. We returned at 3pm. She was on the phone even longer this time and eventually someone else served us. Well, we were away from the lifts but we were in a room over the outside seating area. Fortunately, the hotel seemed to have few guests so it was not too bad. As for a comfort room well, it was very small I had to squeeze past the foot of the bed so that I could open the bathroom door. The bathroom was very nice but the only toiletries that were there were the soap dispensers. We did not have breakfast as I thought 14 euros was too much. On checking out I was asked twice if we had had breakfast. Did she think I would break down under interrogation! If the hotel had been busy maybe I could understand having such a small room but at no stage did we see or hear anyone else on our floor. The rooms shown on the site looked spacious. Oh I nearly forgot, there is very noisy building work that starts at 6am. No air con but there was a big fan but it was too noisy to have on at night. We opened the window but had to close it when to building work started. Hated it.

I give this place 3 and half stars maybe even 4 only because of the wonderful food and friendly staff. I put a friend up there and she just loved the place specially because of the old charm of the dining room and the food and she mentioned that her room was super. If it was just a restaurant it would get a big 5! I decided to stay there myself as I had a late night business dinner and did not want to drive back home 35k. This is where the hotel faltered. My friend must have gotten the best room in the place I guess and I don't know what the others looked liked but the one I stayed in we-llllllll? Best advice just make sure that if they try to put you in room 23 refuse it. It's to bad because with such a wonderful place to have dinner and friendly staff they seem to really miss the boat on the warmth and care of at the least the room I occupied. : ( To be fair and honest I have dined at many of the restaurants in Freiburg and this one holds it's own with most of them. Best to have them send a good pic of the room you will stay in.

I stayed here for 3 nights with my husband and teenage son. I really liked it and can’t see why it has had poor reviews. It was about half the price of hotels in Freiburg town centre, and was in a lovely peaceful area just 6-7 minutes drive from the old town. The room was large - we had the double bunk bed ground floor room. There was a nice little cafe/bar open each evening until 10pm too. There are some lovely walking paths nearby too. There is free parking, and it was possible to park right outside our room. We saw a few kestrels in the surrounding woods.

I stayed here as part of a conference and while it was serviceable, everything about my stay was also a bit grim. The room, for a solo occupant (einzelzimmer standard), was tiny but quiet, except for the very loud pipes. This being said, the price was exorbitant for what it was (a single bed, in a tiny room with a tinier en-suite). I was rudely awoken at 7:45am by one of the cleaning staff coming into my room without knocking and leaving without apologizing... so that was a bit of a shock, and definitely made me feel that my room was not my own private space. The view from the main building was breathtaking, especially at sunset. The location was okay, but hard to get to without a car: it involved a steep uphill climb and was a 30-minute walk from the train station (a 20-minute walk into the old town). The breakfast and hotel lunch were only ok, but the BBQ dinner was superb. The whole experience was fine for one night under the auspice of the conference, but I wouldn't stay for longer.

Lots to say; we booke a week through booking.com and cancelled as it was much economicall to book through the hotel directly. Arrived on a Sunday, we were not informed verbally the restaurant was closed that evening. Nor were we informed it was closed the following evening either; we found out the hard way at 7.30pm. Monday closed. Why? The cook worked over the Easter period! Room 103 for just one night, because of the fighting, running, jumping etc in the room directly above and they too flooded their bathroom and so the water came through the ceiling of our room. We ate in the restaurant one night. The printed menu was old, tired and had no variation, I guess in the last six months. Breakfasts were the same, four sausages were in the tray, Monday and Tuesday morning, The bacon had been bolied in water and wass still in water at 8am. Eggs cooked before 7am were stone cold at 8am. Jams in pre-packed packages. Flooded car park. This place needs some TLC. The reception area was dead, devoid of noise, no gentle music. A little music too would have helped in the dining area. No TV paper for the new week, TV volumn was fixed very low so we had to sit almost on top of the TV to hear it. I have said all that but the room was lovely, beds comfortable. Mini bar empty and you could not but things in to keep cold. It did not work like that and the young lady receptionist would not come to the room to show us how it worked even though I asked here twice. Public transport opposite the hotel is ideal into Freiburg

It is easier to choose Kempinski Hotel in Germany, and the location and service are among the best in the local area. This Munich store is located in the center of the old town, on a street with luxury brands. It takes only a few minutes to walk to Marienplatz, the Royal Palace and the Hofbräuhaus. Freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast is particularly delicious, packed in clear glass bottles. Although there are not many types, the meat loaf and small sausages taste good, and they feel better than the restaurants outside. The standard room is nothing special, the bathroom is quite spacious and has a smart toilet lid, which is rare in Europe. The hotel’s swimming pool is not big. Ctrip’s website says the hotel is closed during the epidemic, but it’s especially open during the summer. Two people are restricted to travel together at a time.
