My wife and could not get an expensive hotel in the Kyoto area due to the upcoming Japan Golden Week holidays. I went through website Japanican and found this hotel in Seta, about 20 minutes by JR Rail outside Kyoto. If you have JR Japan rail pass the travel to Kyoto is free. The hotel is very close to the station, maybe 2 minutes casual walk. The hotel is nice, clean, has good buffet breakfast. Very respectful and helpful staff. The spoken English is O.K. but if you go slow with Japanese language, you find that they to know English and can accommodate your request. The room we got was clean, laundromat for washing, safe location, fixtures worked and tv did to although there was no English stations.Of course,,You are in Japan !!. Very nice little town and wonderful people are there too !!!! Also, you are very near other cultural sites outside Kyoto and next to Lake Biwa, the largest fresh water lake in Japan. Enjoy!!!

The hotel is at a nice location by the biggest lake in Japan. It was a wonderful feeling walking or jogging by the tranquil lake. The hotel is probably at the best location in Otsu. The JR station is about 1km away, and there is a shuttle bus every 15 minutes to the JR station. The hotel is also within walking distance to the smaller railway line, which can also take you to Kyto. Kyoto is less than 30 minutes away, so you can stay at this quiet place while having day trip to Kyoto. I think this hotel offers better value of money than staying in Kyoto. It is a resort hotel. There is onsen or public bath overlooking the lake. The hotel room is of good size although a bit dated. Every room has the view of the lake. There are a number of restaurants on site, but otherwise there aren't that many choices outside the hotel. The breakfast could get crowdy at times, so there could be a short wait for entry. Majority of the tourists are local Japanese, so don't expect good English from the staff. However, the staff are very helpful and the stay was wonderful.

Staying at Yumotokan was going to be highlight of our trip to Japan, and it did not disappoint us. The location is close to kyoto station, only a few train stops away. We were staying near Kyoto staton so the location worked out great for us. The JR Ogoto onsen station has a free cell phone placed outside with numbers saved for various ryokans in the area. So you don't have to worry about having to call to arrange a pick up. We did not have a Japanese sim card so this was particularly useful for us! We stayed at the Akane room, overkooking the view of the lake. The room is on the 10th floor with a large window that spans across the room, so the view you see when you step into the room is breath taking. This room comes with a privat hot spring tub, which was nice to enjoy after dinner. We chose a tatami room and the bedding was comfortable. It was drizzing the night we arrived, and when I went to the open air bath there was no one outside and I had the entire open air bath to myself! The 8th floor open air bath is beautifully decorated, and it makes you feel like you are in the middle of a forest. All the amenities are providied, and I loved the horse oil product. They supply you with everything you can possibly need, which is amazing. The kaiseki dinner was also wonderful experience, and we were happy with the service provided at our table. Yes, it was an expensive night but we felt that price was justified. All staff were welcoming and very courteous. Anyone looking for a ryokan experience, I highly recommend Yumotokan!

The staff were nice and accommodating. They welcomed us warmly. We actually arrived this ryokan before the 3pm check-in time and had to wait around until then. The staff took care of our luggage while we took a stroll outside the facility at the lake side. There were a couple of yatch parked at the side of the lake with groups of people fishing leisurely. We enjoyed our stroll and felt that this ryokan is a nice place to escape from the hustle and bustler of city life and the noisy hoards of tourist. And I could see that this ryokan mostly has local guests more than tourists. There were lots of senior citizen guest here. After checking in, a nice English speaking gentlemen took us around the facility and patienly waited on us when we took a short look at the public onsen area. He then graciously shown us to our room. Our luggage were brought into our room by their staff during our lovely tour. This same gentlemen also offered his help whenever he could. He even offered to take a couple of pictures for us. There wasn't much to do or happening around the area of this ryokan but we did venture into a nearby kobini store to and sat there enjoying our late night snacks. There are some restaurants surrounding the ryokan but we didn't get to try them out as my room plan comes with dinner and breakfast already. We enjoyed our room and the open-air hot spring bath with beautiful view of the lake. The temperature of the water is just right and the room is clean with sufficient amenities for our comfort. The uses Shishedo brand of products in their bathroom and also in their public onsen. I did encountered an unpleasant incident at the public onsen; someone took my bathtowel. I had nothing to dry myself with other than that small hand towel which I took into the onsen bath. I didn't know such thing could happen in Japan. I was really surprised it actually happened. I reported this incident at the front desk; didn't receive any apologies but they gave me 2 sets of replacement towel sets to use. The front desk guy just handed over to me the towels without putting it into a bag and we were on our way to the dining hall for our kaiseki dinner. But luckily the nice gentlemenly staff (he might be the floor manager) from this afternoon happen to pass by and helped to provide us with a nice paper bag for the towels so we could bring it into the dinning hall without looking silly. I really appreciates his hospitality and understanding and praised his thoughfulness. The Kaiseiki dinner was delicious and very lovely. They uses fresh high grade ingredients and was careful with their presentation as well. The waiter assigned to serve us was very helpful and nice too. He does not speak very good English but patiently introduced the food and ingredients too us and did his very best to explain and answer our questions. I am very impressed by his positive and professional attitude and regretted not taking down his name to thank you for his good service in th

If you are after a slightly Japanese Inn style but still with plenty of western influences then this place probably isn't for you. However for that reason it delivered to us what felt like a very traditional Japanese experience and one that we as a family will remember. On arrival we were surprised that we were all sleeping in one room on Futon's, but once we embraced that, we cracked on, put on our Yukata's (everyone in the hotel wears these) and headed for the public Onsen. The baths are beautifully presented with an indoor and outdoor hot bath, a sauna and a cooler pool in a wooden bathtub which was great for cooling off after the sauna. Men and women bathe separately and are only allowed to bathe naked! Please note the swimming pool is only available in the summer. We were here in early June and that wasn't summer so it was empty much to my mothers disappointment. We selected the breakfast only menu and on both mornings of our stay were were presented with a very traditional Japanese breakfast. Very little in the way of sweets and plenty of fish and soup. Some of our group coped better than others with the breakfasts but no-one could deny they'd experienced a Japanese breakfast. For evening meals we hadn't selected the evening meal with our booking which you can have delivered to your room (make sure you are on time if you have selected this as they are very prompt). We therefore ate in the A La Carte restaurant which is open at 8PM (not ideal if you have small children). This option had loads of really tasty Japanese options and some western (chips as a side and a pizza) but we all got on well with our choices. Accommodation wise the room was beautifully presented if not a little smaller than we were expecting. The views of the lake were fantastic and our private bathtub (highly recommended) was also beautifully presented and very relaxing. The shuttle bus is available from Ogoto-Onsen station and can be called from a mobile phone bolted to a table in the Station (we only found this at the very end of our trip).

This hotel's location is very much a compromise, two train stops from Kyoto, two train stops away from the (very interesting) hilltop temple complex of Hieizan, and not far from Otsu JR station or lake Biwa, while still not exactly convenient for travelling or offering any lake views at all. With hindsight, and considering the fact that Japanese cities (including Kyoto) are usually hectic, Otsu proved a refreshingly relaxed and calm base, and I would stay in this hotel again (which this time I only did because I couldn't find a room in Kyoto). The Toyoko Inn chain obviously enforces a very high level of brand consistency, when it comes to breakfast, however, they do seem to allow a limited range of local diversity, even within the same time of the year and the same area of Japan, so Toyoko's (Japanese style) breakfast is, unlike Toyoko's guestrooms, not always exactly the same. I found breakfast at this Toyoko slightly below the branch average, i.e. very good but one can get a fractionally better breakfast at other Toyoko's. The staff is very attentive and I appreciated having a window with a cityscape view, instead of a view of the solid wall of another building two meters away as it is often the case in Toyoko Inn branches.
