Saku Ren delivers a great hotel experience at an amazing price for Tokyo. This is a Japanese business hotel - so the rooms are very small and there is no lobby-lounge seating area and no restaurant. Ample for single travellers, or two people who like to keep their luggage neat. The decorating motif of old Japanese books is lovely and the extra touch of being able to select a massage chair for the 'relax' room or a tatami corner for the 'Zen' room marks this out as a business hotel with some character. What you get are spotlessly clean rooms with good quality amenities, a kettle, fridge and tea and coffee -- and really obliging service. When I arrived in a typhoon of rain the front desk staff whipped out a towel to wipe down my suitcases; when I asked the cleaning staff to give me 10 minutes more before I left the room, it was no problem at all. The location is terrific - right at Jimbocho subway station just 1-2 stops from most of central Tokyo, on a main street with plenty of taxis. The street is lined with book stores, cafes and convenience stores - so you are never more than steps away from breakfast or lunch. My pro tip is Kohikan, a coffee shop chain with an excellent range of freshly brewed coffees and a breakfast set for JPY 500-650. (Same side of the street as the hotel, turn left as you exit the lobby, walk across the cross-street and you are there 3-4 mins). This is not an entertainment area, so it is quiet at night and a lot of the shops close on Sunday, so for shopping and dining you need to go further afield, but its a short taxi ride home.
