1.41km from Paolo Giardini I have stayed at Hotel Caesar in Tijuana around 200 hundred times since 2004 when I started traveling to TJ to visit friends who owned several businesses on Avenida Revolution close to the hotel. I have seen it transform from a rather quaint yet tired example of 1920’s architecture to a rather beautiful boutique hotel that still retains it’s original charm. The rooms are clean, and the showers are strong and hot, the beds are comfortable and the WiFi is fast and reliable. Although the rooms feel smaller than those in the States, please remember this is a renovated hotel from the 1920’s when Tijuana was America’s playground during Prohibition; when Jai Alai, bullfighting and anti-Prohibition partying were the rage. Did you know that Tijuana once sported the third largest bullring in the world? As for the food, Hotel Caesar has the world famous Caesar’s Restaurant where Caesar Cardini created his world famous Caesar’s Salad in 1924. Cardini was living in San Diego but he was also working in Tijuana where he avoided the restrictions of Prohibition. His daughter Rosa recounted that her father invented the salad at his restaurant Caesar's (at the Hotel Caesar) when a Fourth of July rush in 1924 depleted the kitchen's supplies. Cardini made do with what he had, adding the dramatic flair of the table-side tossing "by the chef." Although the original recipe has changed little, the salad is still prepared the same way. The dressing is made from fresh ingredients - at table side - where the romaine lettuce leaves are folded in the dressing and then served. It is a show “not to be missed” should you be in TJ. The restaurant is also considered one of the best in TJ with a variety of delicious offerings and drinks. Since my last visit, the parking has been improved with a dedicated secured parking lot. The only drawback is that the rooms are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors with no elevator...but the again...it still has the 1920’s and exercise is good for your health. And the best is that the rooms are around $50 USD.
