Great hotel in great location. Clean and comfortable Museum House is a mere 10mins walk to most places in town. We initially had a problem with the cuisine around town but the Novo Tahiti Restaurant - only a few doors away - does a wonderful buffet for lunch, and dinner was the best meal for the whole week! Friendly owners. There were Flower events, music events (live bands)and a museum day when entrance is free! Charmaine & Michael - May 2019.

Really unsure why this has the reviews that it does. Most basic hotel I've ever stayed in. To start with, we booked a transfer from the airport to the hotel with them, this cost €29. Luis checked us in and he was great at his job, always smiling, polite and helpful. He gave us a good introduction to the hotel. Most other front-desk staff we met were often grumpy in comparison. The location was brilliant. Right in the heart of Funchal, easy to walk to restaurants and nice to wander the streets. Very close by to Carnaval activities taking place. Booked a family room for two people as it was the same price as a standard double when I booked through booking.com. However, it would definitely be too small for an actual family of even three people. Water bottle was placed on the desk, €2 for 1 litre. We went to a grocery store nearby the next day and bought 5.4l for €1.65. Room faced inwards towards the courtyard and surrounding rooms so lacked any real privacy unless curtains were shut. Curtains were thin and let light in as soon as it got brighter. No mini fridge or tea/coffee facilities in room. Had to pay for the use of the safe. Bathroom was tiny, but shower gel, soap and shower cap were provided. Clean fresh towels. Water in shower was hot and had good pressure. Shower door had good sealant so nothing escaped out onto the bathroom floor. We had swimming towels in our room as well as a blanket, possibly for the "third guest". Adequate space for clothing. TV on the wall. Comfy bed but pillows rather flat. Control to change temperature which didn't work that well. Breakfast was terrible. Plates, cups and cutlery always running out and staff taking ages to bring clean ones. Signs put up to not take food out of the breakfast room. Cereal in open bowls, overcooked eggs, watery soggy mushrooms, bread for toast, juice and water with the tiniest glasses. Some fruit, weird gloopy yoghurt, one type of cheese and one type of cold cut. Tea and coffee facilities but they weren't the greatest. View from the roof is beautiful. "Bar" that provides snacks and drinks. There is a lounge area with quite dated furniture, pool-table (no balls), books and a desktop. Hotel allow locals up to utilise the rooftop but this wasn't an issue for us. It certainly wasn't 15+ people like some reviews mentioned. Check-out could be improved. Key-cards provided stop working at 11:30am (check-out is 12pm) so we couldn't get into our rooms to take our luggage out which was a bit ridiculous. Had to go downstairs to get them reset, make a trip up to get luggage and back down with everything again. If check-out is at 12pm, keycards should stop working then and not before. Won't be recommending this place to anyone I know. Improve breakfast and check-out.

We have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions over the last few years. Our most recent stay was excellent considering the Covid times we find ourselves in! The hotel took so many extra safety measures that we felt completely safe. Of course some of the changes meant that some aspects of our stay were not as pleasurable as they were during previous visits but we are living in difficult times and safety is paramount! The staff really impressed us - they have always been good here but with all the extra measures they have had to endure, including mask wearing for long periods of time in the heat, we would have forgiven them if they were a little less fabulous but they were better than ever! Well done The Vine - we will be back very soon!

Great sized bathroom which always had plently of hot water. Very central position just behind Cathedral so made finding somewhere to eat in the evenings very easy and coice of places to eat where never ending would definitely recommend for a short stay

This is a fantastic little hotel right in the middle of Funchal. The staff are all amazing, from the lovely helpful reception staff, the ‘cocktail maker’, and the wonderful baker who makes delicious fresh pastries & freshly baked bread at breakfast. There is a wide selection at breakfast, fresh fruit, yoghurts, cooked breakfast and a good selection of cakes & pastries. The rooms are lovely, and the beds big and comfy. Coffe/tea maker in the room, and fresh water supplied every day. Toiletries also replenished daily. Reception is amazing, with sweets, treats and drinks to help yourself to. The only thing missing is a pool, but you are about 4 minutes walk to the promenade & sea. We were on half board, and it is a dine around option with 3 fantastic restaurants to choose from ( our favourite being cafe Funchal) The food in all 3 was exceptional though, plenty of choice for your 3 courses - beautifully cooked food, and massive portions. We will certainly return here again, it was an amazing find and fantastic value for money.

We booked a little apartment at the Musa D'Ajuda hotel complex as we've stayed there before and it was sufficient. However, nothing has been done to refresh or even maintain the facilities since and this time it was really showing. First thing, one of the doors to the balcony had a large crack across it (which we reported immediately to the reception only to be told that 'they will look at it') and the other would not lock (reported this to the reception to get a 'we'll send someone to have a look at it' back). We couldn't leave anything outside our locked suitcase as the room was not fully safely lockable. There wasn't a kettle or a coffee machine so the only way to make a cup of tea was to boil water on the little hob in a large saucepan. there was no teapot or even mugs, just tiny cups. Worst thing was the fridge though. The little freezer would not close which caused all our supplies we bought for the whole week to be frozen solid over the first night. A large proportion of the food became ruined as a result. When we reported this to the reception, we got the standard 'we'll send someone to look at it' back. At that point, there had not been anyone to look at the door that would not lock so we requested a replacement room. After a bit of persistence, we got given a slightly smaller room (despite the hotel being empty) so we moved our luggage into there. This room had a coffee maker so that was a benefit. I would strongly suggest taking your teenage children on holiday to this hotel - the rooms still have an analog TV set and the reception insist on giving you the remote for it (which didn't work in our room, which was just as fine as there's no international channels on the TV anyway). We thought it was rather droll. Generally speaking, we would not come back to this hotel - despite its excellent location and local atmosphere - until it's been fully refurbished and brought up to at least acceptable standards without putting the guests and their belongings in jeopardy.

Stayed here as a family of 4 over half term and I'd just quickly start by (hopefully) reaching out to some lovely people from Scotland who my little boy really took a shine too - if you're reading, we missed you on your last morning but thanks for the kindness with Joe. Same to Riley's family, stay well folks. Hotel review: for a last minute week away, I think we got pretty lucky. Good sized room (jnr suite), but the sofa bed was very creaky and noisy. Nice balcony, great location for walks to lido area and also the Marina and what I'd describe as a town centre. Lots of local bars and restaurants. Nice pool area but not enough sun beds, likely not helped by the distancing requirements. But it was awkward to see people struggling to get a bed at just gone 9am. Food in the pool area for lunch and snacks was good; it's not always clear but you can order toasties, burgers, chips from 11am to noon them 4pm to 6pm, with lunch served separately from a small buffet with some occasional show cooking from 1pm to 3pm. Breakfast and dinner is served in main restaurant, which has some outside tables on the main street which are good for people watching etc, and temperature was still warm in the evening when we visited. Food selection ok for a week, but we like to eat out despite being all inc anyway. I would say the guys working the main restaurant work really hard and are a credit to the hotel. Reception area staff very efficient and friendly. Terrace bar again efficient, quite often bringing your drinks out to you, and generally a friendly bunch. My main criticism is that while it's all inc, drinks are only available 11am to 11pm. Everywhere else I've been is at least 10am to midnight. So that felt a bit lacking...after breakfast you'd need to go to the shop if you wanted anything before 11am. At night we'd order a few drinks to take and drink on the balcony past 11pm...well once or twice; we're with two kids! Was in bed at 11pm most nights!! :) I'd recommend it at the price we paid (£1800ish). I'd also stay here again happily. Thanks for a great break.

This was our first time in Madeira and we had a fantastic week. The hotel is in a great position for walking into Funchal or to the Lido area. The tour buses cannot get down to the front of the hotel but, it is only a 50 metre walk from the drop off point. The reception is open and very spacious, check-in posed no dramas and we were soon in the lift up to our room (216). On entering the room you could sense the cleanliness, everything neat and tidy. We were pleasantly surprised that we had a sea view and a small balcony. The room was on the corner of the hotel second floor and was twin-bedded. There is plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. In the wardrobe there is a small fridge and a safe. You are charged for the safe, at the time of writing, 10 Euros for the week. You have to pay a 40 Euro deposit for the key which, is returned if you return the key. There is no kettle or tea/coffee making materials, we had brought our own equipment. We found the beds very comfortable and the air-conditioning worked well. Downstairs in the main hotel you have spacious areas for sitting and relaxing, the bar area a spa area and the sun terrace with an outdoor pool. Through the bar area there is the Spa/wellness centre which, includes a gym. The real gem is the undercover spa bath/infinity pool which, is heated and has power jets; it is also heated to 34 deg C. It is long enough to get some swimming strokes in and only one metre deep. The Magnolia Restaurant is up a flight of stairs off the Spa area, there is a lift for those unable to use stairs. Like the rest of the hotel, the restaurant is spacious with colourful seating. At the far end is the buffet/show cooking area. Breakfast is extensive having a choice of cereals, continental and fully cooked. You can also have omelettes and fried eggs cooked to order, the 'batch' fried eggs in hotels are never cooked well enough for me. The coffee is dispensed from two available machines and, for a change, quite a good blend. The hotel caters for tour parties so in the morning at around 8 am, it can be quite busy, we found 9 am a better time to go for breakfast. The evening meal is normally themed and in two sittings, 6-7:30 pm and 8-9:30 pm, you are given an allocated table and eating time when you first check in. The late eating shift was too late for us so, we asked at reception and got it changed to the 'early shift', this more suited our evening pattern. Again, the food was very good and there was a large variety. There should be something for all palates unless you are very 'picky'. You order your wine/beer etc from one of the waiting staff and the cost goes onto your room bill. One thing to note, iced still water is served from a jug and there is no charge, this makes change from most hotels we have stayed in on the Continent. A bottle of house red, which is perfectly 'quaffable' was 13 Euros at the time of writing, a pint of local beer (Coral) was 3.70 Euros. There is nightly entertainment in the bar in the f

We are at the hotel enjoying the last day of what has been a really relaxing two weeks. The studio apartment is fine for two and the kitchenette is adequate for preparing basics with a good fridge kettle and quality pots and pans. What makes this hotel exceptional is the staff, everyone here is friendly and helpful even with the effect the current situation has had on tourism they are cheerful and upbeat. The standards of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the hotel complex and in local shops, restaurants etc is of a very high standard. The covid test at the airport is very well managed and took about 30mins. from queue to exit. The test itself was uncomfortable but not painful and we received our results well within the stated 12 hours. The hotel provided complimentary fruit and bottled water whilst we waited for test results. We thought the breakfast here was very plentiful and most people would find something they liked. The buggy service down the very steep slope isn't operating due to covid regs but there are stairs and a hand rail down to the street. All in all a very good holiday. Many thanks to everyone here.Marjie and Nancy.

We've just had two great weeks at the hotel Quintinha Sao Joao, perched uphill from Funchal, capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira. This was our fifth visit and we were nervous about holidaying during the pandemic, even though Madeira is a destination from which quarantine is not required on return home. The hotel proactively advised us about the measures needed to have a healthy, Covid-free holiday: Madeira insists, as part of its strategy against the virus, on visitors bringing proof of a recent (72 hours) negative Covid test, or taking one at the airport then waiting in the hotel room for the results. The QSJ staff team has done brilliantly in making adjustments within the hotel, to make life as safe as possible for all, without its measures being intrusive. Much thought has gone into sanitisation, masking, social distancing etc arrangements in place in all public areas, and the staff has embraced all the Covid rules and worked together efficiently and professionally to ensure the delivery of its trademark excellent experience for QSJ's guests. It's sad people have stayed away from the island, not understanding what a great holiday destination it is amid the pandemic, and we felt safer from the virus in Madeira than at home. Despite the current problems, Madeirans remain cheerful and welcoming and there was nothing we did in our previous visits that we couldn't do now: there is no better or safer destination than Madeira, and the incomparable QSJ - try it and see!

We returned on 14/09/20 after 2 weeks at this lovely hotel this was our 6th visit. All the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. We had tests at the airport we arrived 11.30am everything was done very efficiently we were then transported to our hotel to await the results. Everything was explained to us at the hotel about hand sanitisers and masks. We had to stay in our room but we could ring down at any time for food and drinks. We received our results at 9pm which were both negative. Breakfast the following morning was served to us with a good choice it would normally be buffet style but these are not normal times. It was very acceptable and we sat on the terrace every morning over looking the atlantic(bliss). Even though it was quieter all our favourite restaurants were open. The hotel has a free courtesy car into Funchal which you need to book at reception. Madeira have certainly got everything right in regards to Covid. I would highly recommend this lovely hotel.

We are a family of 4 and this was our 3rd time to return to VidaMar. This was a holiday that we had SO looked forward for many months, and so we had high expectations - we just wanted it to be perfect from start to finish, and also to match the other holidays that we had had in Madeira (this was our 7th time to return to Madeira). Well, what can I say - it more than lived up to what we expected. We had a beautiful sea view room with 2 double beds, and a spacious balcony for the 4 of us. This was good, as we had a bit of a wait for the Covid results, and so it was very pleasant to sit on the balcony and have our evening meal which was brought to the room. The hotel will arrange for all your meals to come to your room whilst you wait for your covid results to come. (I think the only change that we would make to our next holiday is that we would arrange to have the test privately at home before our departure). We felt that the hotel's obedience to Covid rules was very good, and we felt very safe for the entirety of our week long stay. Regarding the food, the breakfast buffet (my children's favourite meal) was identical in choice to our previous visits and this was super to see. There really is something for everyone, and particular thanks to Suzy on the egg stand - she never stops! Super omelettes made to order, fried eggs, poached eggs and boiled eggs - and always served with a smile. We also enjoyed our evening meals in the main restaurant and had one meal at Mamma Mia. We very much like that Vidamar has a children's club and our girls enjoyed several hours in this. There is a good timetable of activities and the staff were very attentive and caring - thank you. Overall, it was another super holiday and we were so sad to leave. We very much look forward to returning at Christmas.

We have just returned from a two week holiday to Madeira and this hotel helped to make it a success! We found all the staff, but particularly those on reception and in the breakfast room very friendly and helpful. The refurbishment of the hotel in 2018, has meant that it is light and airy, with plenty of lounge and pool areas to relax in. We didn't discover the sun terrace for a few days, which was above the outdoor pools, but this gave good sea-views. We used the shuttle bus several times into Funchal, which was another asset for the hotel. Previous reviews have mentioned about being disappointed with the breakfast buffet and dining area, but we found the food to quite acceptable and the food trays were constantly being topped-up. We really enjoyed the fresh fruit, freshly made bread and the egg station was always open to make omelettes and pancakes. The food hall is large and does get busy, but we always found a private table for us to sit as a couple and the larger tables appeared to be occupied by those on a packaged tour who wanted to sit with friends/family. We found the best time to have a quieter breakfast time was around 7:30 - 8:15. We had booked a studio room which was described as having a 'side sea-view', but this wasn't really the case. We were placed on the second floor and at best from our balcony, we had glimpses of the sea through the trees, though much of the time we overlooked the hotel in front of the Alto Lido. We asked at reception about this and they offered to find us a sea-view room for our second week, but after consideration we declined this, because we were out exploring much of the time and it's possible to see the sea for almost everywhere on the island anyway. The studio room was great from the point of view of being able to arrange a snack or light supper in the kitchenette, but as others have stated it's wise to bring a little washing-up liquid and cloth with you, although tea-towels are provided. Our room was spacious and kept clean by the staff and basic toiletries were provided in the bathroom, which also had a decent hairdryer. Sometimes the corridors echoed, but we were fortunate to have guests around us who respected this point. We will definitely think of staying at this hotel again if we return to Madeira and will recommend it to our friends, though we'd recommend staying on an upper floor.

This is a lovely hotel to relax in. My room was spacious and the balcony was massive and private (I think all the rooms have balconies but some balconies are smaller and less private, my room no. was 816). Very clean and nicely decorated. It's so close to the beach that you can hear the waves from the room which is heaven and if that's not your thing the doors are soundproof. Best view I've had in a hotel (just the ocean). It's about 15 mins to the centro by bus, the hotel has a free shuttle service and the bus stop is just outside with a regular service. There is a black sand beach in front of the hotel, really pretty. The food was good, varied. Restaurant near it is worth a visit. If you are covid cautious, this place is for you. They take it very seriously (e.g. disinfected my suitcase on arrival, disinfected salt shakers when setting the table etc.) and it sets a good tone in the hotel e.g. ppl don't get in the same lift. They take your temp at check in and having masks, gloves and gel is mandatory (they made me buy gloves as I didn't have any). I felt very covid safe here. The only negative was that the service wasn't great. Only met 1-2 nice people on the front desk and otherwise, I found the staff to be a bit abrupt, questions about activities were met with responses about QR codes. Professional but not overly hospitable. There are steep gradients to the hotel and pool/beach! Overall my stay was super relaxing and I would certainly stay again. If you are concerned about travelling to Madeira during the pandemic, I'm happy to be contacted to talk about my experience of travelling there more broadly.

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for seven nights over Christmas. The accommodation is spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable, bathroom was also large and the decor very traditional. We were made very welcome by the staff who were all very friendly and helpful. Staying on a bed and breakfast basis the breakfasts were excellent with a choice of hot cooked or continental. Eggs can also be cooked to order if you require poached or scrambled. As we prefer to eat during the day and sample local restaurants we only had one evening meal at the hotel which was very good. The hotel also provides a shuttle service to and from Funchal which needs to be booked in advance. A shuttle also runs to the golf club - again advance booking is required. The hotel also organised some excursions and also a wine tasting all of which were complimentary to residents. The hotel grounds and gardens are lovely and all in all it was a very relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Visited Vila Baleira earlier this month for a nights stay on my birthday, a surprise prepared by my bf who had made the hotel know in advance it was a special occasion. We arrived at 1pm and the first thing we see is this beautifully decorated lobby/reception area, the young man that checked us in was very friendly. My bf asked if we could have a room upgrade as it was a special occasion and we knew the hotel wasn’t full. They said that they had already upgraded us to a “partial ocean view room” which my bf had already booked in the first place and made the receptionist aware of this, so no upgrade was really given on our room. Plus our room was facing the road, not ideal as it’s a fairly busy road during the day and with the window open you can hear all the traffic outside. So again with the hotel not being full and being a special occasion why not give us an room facing inwards instead of one facing the road so we can have peace and quiet? Anyway, the room itself was very simple but nicely decorated, everything nicely cleaned. The mattress was so comfortable and so were the pillows, we both contemplated stay another night just for that reason (we were so relaxed in those beds). As we didn't get a room upgrade at least a special treat in our room would've been nice, but didn't have that either. We then headed for the rooftop for a snack, where shared a club sandwich which was very good (just wish they had toasted the bread) and a couple beers each, prices are good and so is service. Then we had a swim in their not so big but lovely pool, the views are amazing with no obstruction whatsoever. On our checkout the next day, we went down for breakfast, the area was very nicely decorated and ventilated. The service was good and so was the food, everything cooked nicely. Shame we only get to pick 3 options out of the “warm foods”. As we got to our room after breakfast the tv kept failing so my bf went up to the pool and I had a bath until it was time for us to leave at 11am. In sum we really had an amazing time together, we just were disappointed (specially my bf who had informed them in advance that it was a special occasion and wanted to give me the best birthday) and the hotel didn’t make any efforts in providing us “an extra” (a room uprade or even just a small treat in the room) as hotels usually do in special occasions such as birthdays.

Actually I never used to travel to the same places multiple times. But with Quinta Jardins do Lago it´s different. I´ve already stayed at the hotel three times, twice with my family (in June and August) and in December 2019 I spent a week in the hotel by myself. It has certainly not been the last time as it really feels like a second home. One of the biggest contributors why I keep returning and why I love this hotel is the staff. The service is outstanding. Everyone is extremely helpful, genuinely friendly and the priority for the staff is the wellbeing of their guests. Whatever you need the staff members always try their best to make you feel comfortable and make things possible. The hotel itself was built in the 18th century and has a special and luxury charm. The rooms are big and bright. It´s easy to find a restful sleep because the beds are very comfortable and it’s a very quiet location. What makes the location also unique is the natural beauty of the lovely, well-looked after botanical garden with a huge selection of over 500 plants and its permanent resident named Colombo, a giant tortoise. As the climate in Madeira is very nice you can spend time in the beautiful garden throughout the whole year. You can even go for a swim in the heated swimming pool during wintertime. Right next to the pool is a restaurant that serves food and drinks. Breakfast can be eaten outside. I just love the selection of fresh fruit, which is served every day after being freshly picked from the hotel garden. In the evening it´s possible to have a delicious dinner at the cozy and chic hotel restaurant. In addition to an a la carte menu you can also choose your meal from the daily changing chef’s special. My advice is to definitely try the national dish Espada it’s delicious! At the hotel bar you can enjoy a wide selection of drinks. There is even some live music three times a week. From outside the hotel you´ll have a great view over Funchal, the island’s capital. It´s particularly magnificent in the evenings. Overlooking the city lights it does remind me of a starry sky. I´ve never been to Madeira over New Years eve but I would expect the fireworks to be stunning from this view. Quinta Jardins do Lago is located in Funchal. Walking to the main center will take around 15 minutes ish. However, there is also a shuttle bus that will take you to the city center and runs 6 times a day. During our last stays we also booked a rental car as it’s the best way to get around the island. Parking spaces are prohibited for the guests next to the hotel. To sum up I can highly recommend staying at Quinta Jardins do Lago. I can´t wait to be back in December. When I travelled to Madeira three weeks ago I did spend my holiday at the very gorgeous sister hotel Quinta da Casa Branca as Jardins do Lago had still been closed due to the renovations, which were carried out during the last months. A nice surprise was being invited to visit the rooms and the g

Hotel do Carmo set in the middle of Funchal close to the market, the old town and the bus station. Which made it really convenient as the bus station was on the sea front. The hotel is a three star, exceptionally clean and well kept. The room was adequate with a balcony and really good shower. No fridge or kettle in room. Downstairs the bar was comfortable and relaxing with lots of space. Snacks & meals served in the bar were well prepared and fresh. The pool and terrace on the roof was very clean and comfortable with fabulous views over Funchal and the sea. But, what makes this hotel special is the staff. They could not have been more helpful, they were really friendly and pleasant, the girl behind the bar was friendly pleasant efficient and professional. The reception helped immensely when we found our flight had been cancelled. The cleaning staff worked hard to keep the rooms up to standard (making sure the curtain which came off the rail twice was fixed). Definitely would return to this hotel.

We took the plunge on Wednesday 28th October and decided to book a flight on Friday at the last minute - flight wasn't busy, forecast ok, and importantly we felt healthy enough to risk the covid test at Funchal airport. The testing at Funchal was very well organised, and after arriving mid afternoon we self isolated in our room at Les Suites enjoying room service for dinner. Our negative result was emailed through at 05.00 the next morning. We have stayed at the Cliff Bay many times so knew what to expect, friendly attentive service, good food and very comfortable surroundings. Apart from minor grumbles with a poor Wi-Fi connection, everything lived up to expectation. We stayed in a Suite for one week and enjoyed every minute. All credit to Porto Bay and their architect for creating this boutique addition out of what previously seemed to be two tumbledown houses and an impossibly small bit of land. In my humble opinion it is a visionary development, and they have created a piece of magic out of what seemed nothing, and now fits in as if it has always been there. The infinity pool works very well with beautiful views over the bay, The Avista restaurant was excellent, and all in all they have worked hard to create a safe feeling environment in these covid times. A huge thanks to the whole team, we will look forward to our next visit in hopefully less restrictive times. Stay safe!

Contrary to all those who rated this place as excellent or good, this was my experience. I booked a superior single room. The day before checking in, the owner Mr. Alberto (who was always jovial and polite) contacted me via WhatsApp requesting my details for ‘online check-in’ and saying that he would forward me the details of my room and other instructions after that. I thought it strange but forwarded him a screenshot of my passport anyway. I suspect it was a way of deciding which room to allocate to whom because the next day, I was given a very cramped triple room! A double bed and a single bed. No space for luggage unless you dump it onto one of the beds which is what I did. Bedside tables were old and badly stained. The bathroom was clean but so tiny with the toilet bowl so near to the sink that it was impossible to sit on it facing forwards!! Shower area was with a weird configuration and you had to be careful getting in and out lest you slip! Cupboard was old and dirty-looking. Noisy street outside the room. No fan in the room so had to leave the window open because it was stuffy and warm. This only exacerbated the noise from outside. The night was worse! I came back late to find the room opposite mine with the door slightly ajar and loud Portuguese music coming from it. At the same time, the room next to mine had their TV on a moderate volume but because the sound insulation was so bad, it sounded really loud. Not being able to sleep, and with no receptionist at the counter at that time of the night, I went out to tell the music guy to close his door. What he did was turn off the music but leave the door open, followed soon after by very loud snoring!! My next door neighbour received some knocking on the wall before he/she switched off the TV. It was way past 1.00 a.m. now. The next day,the housekeeper told me that check-out was no later than 1200 hours although in my booking form it was stated as 1130 hours - 1300 hours. Anyway, I made it a point to return 5 minutes before noon only to find that the room had already been tidied/cleaned! A couple of perishables that I still wanted to use (the bar of soap I was using) had been thrown away. I found this an invasion of privacy (touching my stuff) and a complete lack of respect for the guest! This is a no-star hotel! I think they have better rooms based on the good reviews but I got this crappy one, unfortunately. On the plus side, the wi-fi was strong and there was a good selection of TV channels. The bed was firm, too.

We were looking for somewhere to escape the British weather and celebrate my husbands birthday. We picked this hotel based on the reviews on here and we certainly had a fantastic holiday. We booked a junior suite, which was lovely, very spacious and good views over to Funchal harbour and of course that all important sea view. E-mailed the hotel to ask for a high floor and we were given a room on the 6th together with a lovely bottle of sparkling wine and fruit platter. Not sure if this a normal occurrence or because of the birthday but it was much appreciated - thank you. The room was kept spotlessly clean and towels changed every day. As stated before a litre bottle of water is left every day together with tea and coffee being replenished. The tap water is ok to be boiled for your tea and coffee which then leaves the bottle of water available for taking tablets or drinking . ( Saves buying any extra ). The bed is huge and very comfortable with decent white linen and the towels were again an excellent quality , fluffy and white. The whole of the hotel is well cared for and kept clean, excellent indoor pool complex but do take care as the flooring can be slippery. The roof terrace is good with nice sunbeds supplied with cushioned pads, also a few double sunbeds which we managed to get a few times . There is no honesty bar on the roof terrace now as apparently it was being abused but you can collect drinks from the pool bar but have to carry them upstairs. The outdoor pool area is nice as well and if the weather was warmer we would use that area , unfortunately the pool was too cold for us to swim at this time of year but saying that a few people older than us did brave it. The food is very good plenty of choice of salads, hot meals and desserts. We both thought the breakfasts were good, continental or full english available. All the staff were very pleasant and professional. The Tui staff were very friendly and helpful, in fact we don’t usually bother with welcome meetings as all they usually do is try and sell you trips, but not here. The meeting was very informative with lots of local knowledge and introducing us to other members of staff. On your first day there they have a meeting for newcomers and take you on a tour of the hotel together with helpful info, well worth doing. We knew before we went that we probably wouldn’t go out at night after our dinner so were happy to purchase the cash advance offer that was available. Well worth doing if you are planning on staying in the hotel at night. A few reviews on here have mentioned that the drinks are expensive we didn’t find this we thought on the whole they were very reasonable and they do have a ‘ Happy hour ‘ were drinks are discounted. So we ended up having a couple of pre dinner drinks, and I think if you ordered a bottle of wine at this time and you hadn’t finished it , they would keep it behind the bar for you .A couple of nights there is entertainment on, which was ok easy

After the Covid-related events of early 2020, we were obviously a little nervous about being one of the first to travel overseas from the UK, especially as the travel company we'd booked with had given up any pretence of providing an update on the status of our holiday.  We needn't have worried. Even before we arrived, I contacted the hotel for some assurances regarding the safety measures they had in place, & they obliged with the information I needed to hear! Once at the hotel, the service, the attentiveness, the friendliness were all first class. Granted, the hotel was not as full as they would've liked it to be, but I'm convinced the service levels would not have dipped under other circumstances. Special mention must go to Elsa, who provided sustenance in the form of some fantastic lunches., with good humour & a smile (from behind the mask of course!).  The whole team deserves credit for working together & making some exceptional memories for my family.  What else is there to say? A fantastic location with great views, a shopping centre only 10 minutes walk away with a number of fairly affordable restaurants nearby too (Casa Italia for Italian food, & Hoyo Hoyo if you've never tried food from Mozambique, are exceptional). You can obviously take a bus to Funchal town itself, but a cab will only cost around 10-11 euros anyway.  A most relaxing time & wonderful holiday - thank you Golden Residence!

Ten tranquil nights: 30 August - 9 September 2019! We arrived around 21:00 hours on a Friday night. As check-in closes 22:00 hours, and not being familiar with the location I'd prudently booked Madeira Airport Transfers - who for €2 more than the Aerobus operated by the SAM bus company - dropped us off at the closest point possible: the junction with Travessa Dos Escaleres. It was a short walk from there over a raised cobbled section that crosses a water course/stream into the busy cobbled pedestrianised Rua Santa Maria. Friendly staff observing our hand luggage pointed out the door to 145, which is probably one of the few doors that's not a piece of painted artwork! A flight of stairs led to the reception on the first floor (UK) where we met the charming Bruno who showed us to our room up a further flight of stairs. As requested, we'd been allocated the Embroidery Suite at the rear of the building on the second floor. It's a spacious room with a separate toilet, a cast iron roll-top bath and even a T.V., over-looking an enclosed private patio. The restaurant's diners' on the patio never disturbed us in the evenings. The patio - available for the use of the hostel's guests until 11:00 hours - is where we ate our breakfasts daily. The self-serve buffet breakfast was available from 08:00 hours (you'll be rebuked if you help yourself 10 minutes earlier!) and consisted of freshly baked rolls - from the bakers next door; that's also great for picnic provisions - scrambled eggs; bacon; ham; cheese; spread and coffee... The staff ensured that nothing ran out - quite an accomplishment, considering that many guests made a sandwich that they wrapped in a paper napkin and took away! That first night enticed by the 10% discount (including alcohol) for hostel guests and in no mood for walking we ate at the Santa Maria Restaurante. It proved a good choice as the food was superb; the staff unassuming and professional. And we ate there a further three times! We did eat at other establishments, but felt their prices and quality didn't compare; plus, the cacophony from the staff at the other and surrounding eating places, enticing diners to eat wasn't conducive to conversation or made for a pleasant ambiance... The Santa Maria Hostel's location we found to be incredibly convenient: turn right out of the door and first left into Travessa Do Pimenta (between numbers 126 & 124) brings one into Rua D. Carlos and views of the sea. There's a taxi rank, and on the opposite side of the road a park, frequented by earnest elderly card playing locals adjoining a BMX/skate park frequented by equally earnest, albeit far younger locals! West of the park is the cable car station and a bus station. I'd anticipated that there would be fellow walkers at the hostel with whom we'd possibly share transport for some of the circular walks accessible only by car. There were no other English speaking guests. We managed however to use the three bus compani

I hesitated between three and four for my rating. Bright Star is a nice hotel and is very well situated close to port and marina although it is next to a grotty empty site and a car park. The rooms were smart and large but basic. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast can be broken down into two parts; the cold options which were plentiful and tasty, and the hot options which were both sparse and unappetising. The pool area was deserted when I stayed and it’s not in a great location next to a car park. It’s well priced but it doesn’t merit the four stars on the wall and whilst that is reflected in the price paid it still doesn’t fit right with me. So a rating of three it is. I would happily stay there again, especially for the location, but I do wonder if I could have found a little more nearby for similar money.

We have just returned home from our 7th holiday at Porto Mare and, once again, the hotel fully lived up to our expectations. We were fortunate to have unbroken sunshine for 7 days with not a drop of rain. Upon our arrival at the hotel it was so nice to be greeted by so many staff that we have met on previous visits that it was just like meeting up with old friends. Prior to our arrival we had not realised that it would be Carnaval Week in Madeira and we were able to fully enjoy activities in Funchal. The hotel had gone to great lengths to mark the carnaval ranging from themed dinners in the Atlantida restaurant with the staff in costumes for the occasion through to a spectacular samba display in the Portofino bar with audience participation! Everything about the hotel was superb. Our room was large with enormous beds and was very well appointed. Housekeeping was thorough and efficient throughout our stay. We ate mainly in the hotel, especially in the Atlantida restaurant and enjoyed a superb meal in the Med restaurant on one evening. The happy hour in the Portofino bar was a daily must and during our stay we were able to sample all the cocktails that were available. They set us up well for the dinners that followed. During our stay my wife had 3 separate treatment sessions in the spa and thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. The gardens remain a great pleasure in which to stroll and the warm weather meant that I was able to swim in the large outdoor pool every day. There is absolutely nothing adverse to say about the hotel and the fact that this was our 7th visit speaks volumes. Without exception we found staff to be a delight - friendly, welcoming and extremely efficient and helpful at all times. Their English is first class so that communication is never a problem. The hotel is some distance from the centre of Funchal and we found the courtesy bus to and from town to be invaluable. The quality of food is excellent throughout the hotel and the buffet breakfast in Atlantida offers an exceptional range of foods to suit all tastes (I particularly like being able to have a freshly made-to-order omelette with a choice of fillings!). We thoroughly enjoy our holidays in Madeira and at Porto Mare. We shall soon be booking our 8th visit for later in the year.

I can only add my own experience of this lovely hotel to the glowing reviews it has already received. Despite the Covid restrictions we were treated as honoured guests, receiving excellent service at all times. The staff were, without exception, friendly and efficient, making sure our holiday was the best it could be. Our room was spacious, well maintained and spotlessly clean with fresh flowers which lasted for the whole week. The dining room easily accommodated everyone with ample social distancing and every detail had been thought of to make each meal special. We had opted for half board and each meal was a delight - the delicious food coupled with the friendly and attentive staff confirmed that we had made the right decision. The hotel is in a quiet location with a five minute walk to the bus stop into Funchal town. The delightful swimming pool was a restful place to relax and the poolside bar provided more excellent food. This hotel obviously has high standards and prides itself on it's excellent service, with seemingly no compromise to that service despite the difficulties thrown up by Covid.

Stayed for a week and was upgraded to the panoramic tower on the first floor with stunning views over the bay. Lovely to watch the sunset and the cruise liners coming and going. Modern bathroom and big balcony. We had difficulty adjusting the air conditioning so used to leave the patio door open slightly and slept well. Could hear some traffic noise but it did not bother us. Breakfast had an adequate selection and plenty of it. There was no kettle in the room but when we asked they found one after a few days. That is the only fault we could find for this 4* hotel as we would expect to find tea and coffee making facilities. We chose the location for the views and how easy it was to get onto the VR1 instead of negotiating the traffic in Funchal. We used the shuttle bus once to go into Funchal for the day. Ate at the restaurant in the hotel on a couple of occasions which suited us after we had been exploring the island and came back tired.

My partner and I (both in our late 20s) visited at the very start of November and opted for a superior sea view room. After arriving at Madeira airport, we showed our negative test results and were with our hire car within 45 minutes of landing. There is plenty of free parking near the hotel, (and around the town in general) or you can opt to part in their secure car park which I believe is around €6 a day. The drive from the airport is easy and takes about 25 minutes. Note - we used Goldcar for our hire car, who are notorious for trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes especially which their extra insurance. Just get insurance beforehand and decline theirs (no matter how hard they push!). The hotel doesn’t look overly impressive from the outside, but once inside you’ll find it’s very modern, clean, light and has great views out to sea. Our room was on the 9th floor (of 11) and pretty much felt brand new! Lovely comfortable bed and a nice balcony over looking the ocean. The superior room was lovely, but we don’t think it gave that many extras over a normal room. We believe the superior extras were: robe in room, larger balcony, higher level room. The only thing that we’d change about the room was the fact that no tea/coffee was provided even though they gave a kettle... also, it was €30 (I think) to use the safe for the week. There are supermarkets nearby so we just bought our own coffee and used the lock our bag for a safe. Just something to think about before you travel there. The breakfast setup was great and we never had issues getting a seat outside. The setup was a “self service buffet” but due to covid, you were guided around by a waiter/waitress. The food was good quality and a great selection... even Prosecco! The coffee wasn’t great, but that’s a minor point really. There was music entertainment every evening from around 8pm so was lovely to sit out and have a drink before or after dinner with a gin and tonic and listen to that. Either on the balcony or the terrace. The trip was for a birthday celebration and we emailed the hotel before to confirm, not expecting a lot but they still went above and beyond. They said they would leave a little cake in the room and on the day there was a huge cake! With a spa voucher. Which we felt was very generous and thoughtful. The staff were all so friendly and helpful. Especially by the pool, we definitely had more beers and bloody Mary’s than we planned! But was a nice touch the waiters proactively walked around the pool, and always wished you ‘a happy day’. The location of the hotel was perfect in our opinion. A nice quiet area with lots of restaurants and bars in walking distance. There was a shuttle to and from the centre. Although we enjoyed the 40 minute walk with a drink stop to town. A return taxi is around €10 or Uber is available and this was around €7 from the centre. Finally a couple of recommendations, on our birthday evening, we ate at the Forte restaurant. They ha

We had an absolutely fabulous stay at this truly majestic hotel, situated in the bohemian Funchal old town. We could not fault anything with the room, facilities or the food offered on a sumptuous bed and breakfast basis. The panoramic views from our suite were magnificently facing the sea and cruise ship docking quays which we continually watched while sipping drinks on our large spacious terrace which contained a large flowering hibiscus tree for our total relaxation after spending the days and evenings exploring this exciting, friendly and charming island. The fabulous swimming pool and spa facilities, along with the exotic well-manicured gardens and beautiful bird aviaries which also included, in the lower stepped gardens, a functioning banana plantation, helped to make this holiday a dream come true. The Hotel staff were exemplary, polite, friendly and always smiling and attentive and always willing and able to help you with everything and anything that you desired. I even had a Birthday Cake left in our room on the right day. Luckily, the cake only had 3 candles, not 60! Just book it now, you will not be disappointed.

Suitable for active traveller, who does not want to spend his holiday in the hotel room, but wants to rest in a safe, small, clean and peaceful place! The breakfast is 5star -quallity, very fresh and has a lot of variety. And the cleaning was maybe even better, you seldom see so clean rooms! So the warmest thanks belong to the staff in the kitchen and the cleaning ladies! The rooms with a kitchenette are very clean, though dark: sun never shines to rooms that all are on the eastern side of the hotel . And there is no sea view (maybe in the suite). You can see as much day light from the door chink as from the window... but maybe this would be an advantage in the summer time, now it was a bit cool and dark. Since the poor isolation you will also hear all the traffic which is quite noisy at least in the daytime. In the upper floors the nights were silent, though. And the beds were good. At the reception Carina was very helpful giving the best advice for the island, and Fatima was nice and welcoming. (a male receptionist gave so lazy and poor advice that it was easy to get lost with them!) The roof pool and the sun beds are good for resting in the sun, and there you also have a good sea view. The jacucci was gold, though, and the pigeons were bathing in the pool, too :) 2 km from the city center and the harbour, 2 euros by buss, is near or far, depending on the person. The area is very touristy with restaurants all similar. Avoid the Papa Manuel´s pizzeria anyway, if you want to have any service at all.

Chose to stay here so we had a good base for a week exploring the island, but without staying on the "casino" side of town where more people seem to be called John than Joao.... Nice place. A small hotel a 10 min walk away from the old town. 20 mins or so to the centre of Funchal. Walk back is indeed uphill a bit, but it's not a killer unless you would normally have difficulties with a hill as it doesn't go on for that long. And if you don't like hills, you've chosen the wrong country. It's all hills. Save their phone number if you're arriving via car and call when you get there. Not the easiest road to stop on and get them to open the gate into the car park. There's room for enough cars in there, but you'll prob end up doing a few manoeuvres to get out. Easy trip from the airport. Had their provided breakfast on the first day. Was enormous. Combination of cereal, fruit, pastries *and* a hot breakfast. Hot food was pretty bad - frankfurter sausages and some bacon that was pretty awful, but the rest was nice. We made our own breakfast the rest of the time in the small kitchen available in the room. Room itself was pleasant, if a bit worn in places. Shower leaked quite a bit , the shower door and all cupboard doors were creaky as anything. Not really anywhere to sit and eat your food if you want to make anything in the room, but we managed with some sitting in chairs with breakfast plates in lap. Room had two single beds pushed together rather than a "real" King/Double. Wifi worked fine. Check in/out was quick for us. Grounds are pleasant. See view room looked out over gardens and to the sea and Funchal.
