We booked a double room 3 nights accommodation, incl breakfast. We chose this hotel due to comments & location in Sassi Barisano. Arriving by bus in Matera at Piazza Matteotti, it cost €10 to get to the hotel. It is on a road, so the taxi can stop in front. There are no public stairways to access the hotel just 7 or 8 steps. It's in a most wonderful location right in Sasso area, close to all the sites & restaurants & bars. Reception closes at 20:00 but they give you a phone number should you need it We were so graciously greeted by Annamaria, given a map and tourist info including restaurants. She also showed us to our room & explained the air con, heater and keys. All I can say about our room was wow! Its room number 4, so if you get a chance choose this 1. It is really a 2 bedroom with a fabulous balcony with access by 1 door & another door opens out onto a terrace. Fabulous views all round. It has vaulted ceilings, with brick floors. Plenty of hanging space, a fridge with drinks for sale, a tv, coffee/tea making and very reliable wifi. The bed is really comfortable & its very quiet, making for a good nights sleep. Our ensuite has a roomy shower stall with a rain shower and hot water. The drying rack works well. Breakfast is served each morning 8-10. Its buffet style with plenty of choice. Its all fresh and well presented. We arranged for a taxi to pick us up to take us to the station for the onward journey. This is a fabulous place. Everything is good about it. The staff are so helpful & accomodating, the room is terrific & the breakfast is great too. We could not ask for more & recommend staying here.

My wife and I, sister in law and her husband stayed for the one-night at this hotel to visit this beautiful city. The location and the views were absolutely amazing. Cristina was brilliant and her staff very helpful. Our room was basic, but clean with everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. Great breakfast in the morning. Would suggest you pack light as you are unable to park close by and the steps can be a challenge for some. Overall we were all very happy with hotel choice and our stay, Thankyou Cristina

Matera is unique and hard to describe or compare. It is beautiful everywhere and well preserved. A lively centre with museums, sites and also good restaurants and cafe’s. Hotel San Giovanni is in the very hart of this all. Beautiful rooms and good service. The staf is friendly, they want to give good service and are like a big family. The restaurant is excellent, one of the best in town ! The only downside was waking every early morning because of people dragging their suitecases down the streets and stairs... but I guess that is happening everywhere unfortunitally these days. We had a bonus because James Bond was filming his newest film here !

We stayed 2 nights in B&B Hoplites. Our host was very welcoming & could not do enough for us. She recommended restaurants for dinner & places to see in Matera. The room was in a cave & very large. The bed was comfortable & the bathroom amazing with a very large shower. Hoplites is walking distance to all attractions in Matera. Parking is difficult as the old town of Matera is pedestrian only, however our host was very helpful with directions to a free car park near by. I would highly recommend Hoplites as a place to stay in the old town of Matera. If you are visiting Matera you must stay in the old town.

This hotel is superb. We stayed in a cave room that was very spacious and comfortable. The views from the terrace are probably the best in matera and stunning. Delightful little breakfast room and right in the heart of the main tourist area. The gentleman on reception booked us a tour by ape which was a truly great way to see matera. The restaurants nearby that we visited were all excellent. Would definitely go back

Matera is undoubtedly expensive and is likely to get more so. I found the pictures deceiving for this property but it is not dis-similar to other cave accommodation. We had room 8 which was not actually within a cave which I thought I had booked. It was actually above the cave. The room had 3 balconies which gave a great view over Matera. This did have is downside since the was quite a lot of noise from the laneways. The room was also buffered by the wind quite a lot. The room was quite small and the bathroom consisted of a shower and toilet - the sink was within the room. This is suitable for couples and not friends. The breakfast was simple and we found a little inadequate. The room also had a 'damp' quality about it but our tour guide advised us this tends to be the case in these properties. There are plenty of newer properties being established due to the growth in popularity. The location was great. Matera is on a hill so lots of step. We did find it a little hard to find but if you follow the GPS coordinates provided and then leave the car in the car-park near the toilet then look to the left (up the stairs) you will find the entrance. There is no 24 hour reception.

We just visited the beautiful sassi di Matera and stayed at Alle Conche. We were two adults and three children ages 8,12,15 and we could not of been more comfortable. From the communication prior to arriving to all our interactions with staff they were beyond helpful. We changed our dates last minute as our flights changed and they were so accomodating. Frederica arranged a taxi for us to pick us up from Bari as we arrived at 10.30pm. We didn’t arrive at Alle Conche until midnight however they were waiting for us and checked us in so we could get some rest. The beds are so comfortable the decor lovely and the rooms beautiful. They were spotlessly clean and breakfast was just perfect. I could not recommend Alle Conche highly enough. It is elegant and stylish and in the heart of the sassi. The other advantage is that a car can drive right up to the door so you can unload your luggage then you have only 20 stairs up to reception. Thank you Frederica and Alle Conche for making our time in Matera so special we loved it.

Great hotel with big rooms overlooking the canyon. We left or car outside the restricted zone and carried an overnight bag. The proprietors were great at explaining how to see the city ( we walked 6 miles) and toured by ourselves for 6 hours. Hotel is new, modern and tastefully done. The bed is very comfortable and breakfast was quite good. Only complaint is the WiFi was no good and it is disappointing in a brand new place to not get WiFi. They acted surprised it wasn’t working and reset it but it only lasted 10 minutes and it was gone again. The sign for the hotel is hard to see so keep your eyes peeled.

From the outside ( a little hard to find), this place looks like nothing. But, once you step into it, it is beautiful ! The whole house is sleek, ultra modern in an 100 year old house. Our room and bathroom were very clean with probably the nicest bathroom I have used in Italy. Lovely ! But, the really important part is the owner, Pippo. We really became lost finding the place ( our fault). He was so kind to find us,( we used the tourist information person to talk to him) He drove the car to his place and then with my husband went to go park the car nearby. He speaks a little English but he uses his phone to translate and we all had fun talking to each other. Don't worry about the language. He gave us a great map for Matera and places to go. He also recommend a wonderful restaurant in the Caves and made the reservation for us. His location is only two blocks from the center of Matera . Easy walk. Matera is beautiful and the region of Basilicata is absolutely stunning. We would come back to Pippo and his place without any reservation. His breakfast was wonderful. His wife makes the cakes and he makes a great cappuccino. It was a lot of fun staying there.

We booked a last minute holiday here and had a comfortable and relaxing stay. We had booked a suite and on arrival were shown to a basement room which was a large and impressive cave. Unfortunately for us, some building works were being undertaken nearby so we were woken up at around 7am by loud continuous drilling. We complained to reception who were brilliant about it, contacting the builders to try to sort the issue out. As the building was going to continue for a few days the staff offered us a choice of 2 other suites. The one we ended up staying in was higher up and we weren’t disturbed by noise again. The bathroom in our suite didn’t have a door but was behind a wall. However, if you’re ok with that the bathroom is well set out with a hairdryer, socket and toiletries. Towels are changed daily which is essential due to the humidity. Lighting is very low but the mirrors have lighting behind them so you can see to get ready. There were 2 open hanging areas in our room with about 7 hangers in each. There were open shelves for folded clothes but no drawers. There was a safe and coffee making facilities but no milk. We bought our own and stored it in the fridge/mini bar. Bottled drinking water is supplied daily at no extra charge. Breakfast was an continental style buffet with a choice of cooked eggs. The coffee was very nice and the freshness and quality of the food was good. The staff were professional and friendly without being intrusive in any way. We tried the spa once which was quite nice if a little on the small side & the pool only around 3/4 hydra-massage options. One visit to the spa per stay is often complimentary but that depends on who you book through, otherwise it’s €50, ( for an hour for 2 people - I think!). It’s worth asking. A word of warning; we independently arranged a taxi from the airport to the hotel and because of regulations the driver had to drop us a 5 minute walk from the door but at a point that was a steep walk downhill which we had to pull our cases down. The streets are made of polished stone so are slippery even in the dry. It might be worth speaking to the hotel about booking a taxi or at least asking them to arrange for the taxi to drop you at the hotel reception as all it takes is a permit. We didn’t know this! The hotel staff arranged this for us when we were collected, thank goodness as it would have meant dragging our cases back up the hill! Also, flat shoes are a must for this town.

“Everything to like and nothing to dislike” would sum up my experience at In & Out Matera. When I arrived, Mariella, my host, literally moved her car so I could park directly in front of the guest house. In a congested neighborhood, that speaks volumes to her hospitality. The style of the guest house is a very up-to-date conversion of a space that I think was a warehouse. With beautifully cleaned limestone walls that rise to a barrel vault, all updates take their cue from the warm color of the stone. Mariella sketched out a walking route through town and made a dinner recommendation that turned out to be brilliant. Bathroom facilities are brand new, with excellent water pressure, plenty of hot water, and nice towels. Cleanliness is amazing throughout this guest house. In the morning, a beautiful spread was laid out that included bread from the artisanal (slow food bakery), a local pecorino cheese, a nice bruschetta, and some local cured meat. Finally, while Mariella did not speak English, this was no problem as she was very kind and genuinely attentive to making me feel welcome.

We spent one night here while visiting Matera. The hotel is new and everything is quite spiffy; bathroom in particular was very modern and large. The room itself was comfortable but was not a suite but certainly works well for a couple. A very strong reason to stay is location if you are driving a car. The hotel is close to but not actually in the old part of the town and there is ample parking adjoining the hotel but it is a quick walk to the historic and beautiful centre of Matera. Breakfast was excellent and the service overall was quite good. We thought if might be a bit expensive.

So, this is not really a hotel, more a luxury apartment. There are only six exclusive rooms located on the top floor of this beautiful building which is ideally situated within a few minutes walk of the Sassi and all of Matera's attractions, bars and restaurants. Each room is so beautifully decorated using Italian materials as is the communal area. and the decor is utterly chic. This stay was to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and we could not have chosen anywhere more lovely or romantic. My description will never do it justice but here goes. Our suite had a circular bed, a small, fully equipped kitchen and a circular wet room with an exceptional ceiling shower set up complete with colour changing lights and a separate toilet with music! A small seating area and two huge windows overlooking the opposite side of the ravine really sets off this room. The towels and complementary slippers were presented artistically in an old suitcase and there were gorgeous toiletries and a whole range of little things for guests such as toothbrushes etc in case you have forgotten something. A daily maid service and a coffee machine were also welcome additions. Buffet breakfast was served in a small restaurant round the corner where we were so well looked after with amazing staff and a lovely spread each day and truly delicious coffee. Before we arrived the hotel contacted us regularly and, as there is not a 24hr receptionist, they made sure that there was someone to welcome us even though our plane was badly delayed. Roberta, the lovely receptionist (sorry - I'm not sure what else to call her), was so wonderful. She spoke perfect English and, on arrival, she sat us down and told us what we should go and see, the routes we should take, restaurants we might like and so much else. She offered to book restaurants, tours etc for us and was such an amazing source of useful information. As this is not a hotel as such we felt that she had more time to chat, find out how we were doing and was a great sounding board for my terrible Italian which made our stay so much more personal and friendly. Her wonderful help and advice ensured that we made the best of our stay and we are so very grateful to her for this. Without her help I am sure we would have missed bits. At the end of our stay I was so sad to leave this wonderful place. A real hidden gem and a stunning place to stay supported by amazing staff. Truly beautiful.

A perfect stay, the apartment is beautiful, spacious and very clean. Because of the high ceilings, a feeling of coolness, even without the aircon on (30 degrees outside!). Tiziana was very helpful with everything, car parking (valet service available!) suggestions what to see and do..... The location was also perfect: Only a few minutes walk to the main square of the old town. As an interesting side line, which we found rather nice, there is no TV in the room. Not a problem for those, that must (if you have time, with all the sights to see ;-)) have a TV, because the WIFI works beautifully. So you can log on whenever you want to get the news. Luckily, we had read the reviews before arriving by car ,because navigating from the outskirts to the hotel would be challenging for anyone not familiar with the city of Matera. And in any case, there is no parking close to the hotel- in fact you have to walk the last 50 metres or so from the drop-off point to reception. We followed instructions from the hotel staff, leaving the car on on-street free parking, and calling the hotel for a pickup which took five minutes or so. Matera is just an amazing city, totally different from most of the historical centres of typical Italian hilltop towns. The way the old city has grown means that you get around by climbing LOTS of narrow steps. The hotel room was part-cave, carved into the rock, and part more conventional block construction. The room was very spacious, All very comfortable, no damp smell, excellent quiet air conditioning. Good, but not excellent, wifi. Breakfast is in the reception area, also excellent. But the setting is just spectacular! Many good restaurants nearby, and prices are typical, with no apparent mark-up for being in such a unique location. Be prepared for lots of tourists around, very crowded streets. While we were there filming was underway for the new 2020 James Bond movie, which caused some disruption with street closures. Very highly recommended, both the city and the hotel for 2 to 3 nights stay. After the 3rd night you might begin to get a bit weary of the crowds!

Even his wife helped me carry my suitcase up only 3 short flights of steps. The whole family lives there but the young children were very well behaved and not noisy at all. The room was modern new and very clean. The aircon was strong and this is important as it was very hot. There were toiletries and even a safe. Although there were no kettle and coffee and tea facilities, the hosts were always prepared to help make you hot water to make coffee or tea. I bought some fruits and they even help cut them and store in the fridge. The tv had no English channels and the host spoke only little English.

Wanted to stay outside Matera because we didn’t want to fuss with our luggage and stairs, so we found a great rate for this lovely Masseria outside town. The couple who recently inherited this 850 hectare farm, re-envisioned several buildings to create a bright, open, welcoming, comfortable property. The white backdrop is perfect for a fantastic collection of wonderful antiques and artwork by current artisans from the area. Beds we comfortable and each room is individually decorated to complement the architectural characteristics of each room. Ours had a fantastic wood ceiling and beams complimented by beautifully carved armoire in dark wood. The large shower with rainfall head was refreshing after a long day of stairs and stones on Matera. The library and salon upstairs were out a palazzo. On the main floor is a sitting area, breakfast room and dining room. Breakfast was wonderful with homemade sweet and savory dishes, frittatas, homemade yoghurts, farm to table cheeses and jams, and sweet cakes. Everything delicious. Dinner was locally sourced and prepared in traditional ways - we had local sausage, roasted potatoes and salad. A really nice change from pasta and fish that we’d been eating on the Amalfi Coast. There is a pool and lots of wonderful areas to enjoy the outdoors, a garden area under the fog trees, tables outside the doors of our second floor bedroom. All could have used some umbrellas, cushions and perhaps outside the rooms chaise longues, rather than a table and chairs. The pool also needs cushions and umbrellas. Would I stay here again? Definitely! I loved the modern take on farm/rustic style combined with a nod to local artisans. I liked the food, the feel and the possibilities. I loved the little chapel and the donkeys and bulls, fig trees, the comfy beds, the common spaces and the feel. Take a chance! It’s a 10 minute drive to Matera and easy to park. After a long hot day, I found it a peaceful retreat

The hotel is conveniently located near the center (10 minute drive from Sassi di Matera), yet it has a vibe of “in the middle of nowhere” place. We visited at the end of June and the golden wheat field that surrounded the property, together with hay placed around, really added to the mood. Peaceful, quiet and charming hotel. It has clean neat rooms and big terraces with tables and chairs. You can grab some juice or beer from the mini-fridge in your room and sip it outside if you wish. There is also a pleasant courtyard downstairs. Towels were of a good quality - soft, spotless and fresh. They put soap bars, shampoos and body lotions in the bathroom. Shower door in our room was making a loud noise when closing but it worked fine. Both rooms we took had TV in them. Hotel has a huge parking too by the way. The reception is not easily detected but the receptionist kindly walked outside to show himself when we arrived. When you enter the building, head to the door on your very left before the steps (ignore several doors in the middle right after the stairs that you will face upon entering). This room is also used as a breakfast lounge. The breakfast was very simple (nice Matera bread, some savory muffins, prosciutto and Parmigiano, some crostata, yogurts, pastries, cookies and cereal) and, honestly, underwhelming (fake juices and bad coffee), but it’s a three star hotel and for the price we paid I guess we were expecting it and we ate a couple of things that appealed to us. Overall, we enjoyed staying here and it was great to find two rooms available with such a short notice (one day before coming to Matera).

I found Cenobio hotel after having a bad experience in a B&B in Matera. I was looking for another place to stay late at night, when I found Cenobio Hotel. I asked to see the rooms before booking the night to make sure I was not going to make another mistake, and they show me 3 rooms that they had available that night. All 3 rooms they showed looked great! All rooms have a beautiful mix of the old Matera style with a touch of modern amenities. Bathroom was very clean and modern. No mold odors like I experienced in the B&B I had booked before. I ended up booking a room upstairs that had a great view to the “Sassi di Matera”. They even offered to go to the B&B I had booked and helped me carry the luggage to Cenobio Hotel. And when I was checking out, they also helped me to get a taxi and made sure the taxi arrived to take us back. You will make no mistake booking this hotel! The hotel is located in a spot where you often see tourists stop to appreciate the view. And is really close to go either to the center or to “Chiesa di San Pietro Caveoso“.

The Quarry is a beautifully renovated boutique hotel, beautifully positioned in the center of Matera and with beautiful views available over the Sassi and Murgia Materena Park area. Suite 410 where we were had an amazing view and good natural light with floor to ceiling windows (it also had a round bed which takes a little getting used to). We visited several other rooms/suites in the hotel which had fairly small windows and limited light, so I would suggest choosing carefully if this is important to you. While a very top end boutique hotel, we would not classify this as 5 star L nor as a "resort". A small thing, perhaps, but there is no hair conditioner offered (that said they went out to buy some for us the next day), we had to request bathrobes (which arrived quickly), water was not provided on a daily basis, the heating was not turned on until we asked a second time, the heating in the bathroom never ended up working. The hotel has 13 rooms, a private breakfast area and a lovely dining terrace which is also open to outside visitors (definitely worth a visit as the restaurant service is excellent, the cuisine very enjoyable and the view unbeatable). The breakfast was less well done - we were the only clients and they still managed to burn our 2 slices of toast. In summary, it was a very nice place with very nice and helpful service, but by calling itself a 5 star L resort, the Quarry sets expectations above what they provide.

Italian style, but there was fresh bread as well as the toast crackers you often get, cereal and yoghurt. The location is outside the sassy but its really close and convenient as its also close to bus stops. If you stay in the sassi you will have to cart your luggage up and down all the steps. We watched some people do it and were glad we weren't staying there.

I stayed at La Casa di Lucio for 2 weeks while my husband was here for work in Matera. I had the pleasure of being strictly on vacation and spending much time around the hotel and surrounding old city of Matera. It is located in the most gorgeous and cinematic area of old city of Matera and is truly stunning waking up to the sights of the caves and views each morning. Church bells, full moon views, it was truly something to remember. My most favorite part of my days in Matera was waking up and having breakfast with lovely Michele. I don't often (ever) stop and have an hour in the morning to enjoy breakfast and cappuccino. Breakfast was served down the hill a few 100 feet from our room which was great. Most days it was just me and I so enjoyed the quiet time and chats with Michele who was incredibly thoughtful. Fantastic at taking care of his guests, very thoughtful and kind. Peter also was a true gem of an employee. He has a terribly hard job taking peoples heavy luggage up and down the many slippery steps of this old town. I do not envy the work he does, but he always seemed so happy to help! He was always willing to help me no matter how early or late, and I so appreciated it morning and night. He is a wonderfully kind and helpful person, and I found myself quite literally saved by him many times! Thank you, Peter, for everything! Also after staying in the hotel for two weeks I should add, the housekeeping staff run by Brunsella was also all very kind. The lovely woman who cleaned for us everyday was so good to us. Considering we were living with them for 2 entire weeks I was amazed by how they took care of us. All in all, the staff at Casa di Lucio is what I will remember for their warmth and kindness and genuine happiness to help. We were in room 14 which I liked the layout of, because there was a small seating area above the bedroom. I also liked how the hotel is arranged. It was like having our own little apartment right off the old streets of this ancient city. Do note coming here you will need to be prepared for stairs, and slippery old worn down marble. Footwear is key! It should be noted rooms are literally refashioned Caves, they are dark and cavernous, as you may expect staying in a cave. I would have loved if they had additional floor lamps in the bedroom for light and ambiance at night, but we made do. Unfortunatly the beds were very stiff. In the future I think an upgrade on bedding would go a very long way! Also, to be noted our room did not have a shower. Which was absolutely fine for me, but difficult for my husband. In terms of bathrooms I’d say room 14 has a bathtub with a dream of a view! Incredible overlooking the square below. Lastly our favorite meal of many in Matera was most certainly at the hotel’s restaurant, Regia Corte. I cannot suggest another place more than this. Absolutely incredible place to have a meal, the view! Unreal. So very romantic, and the best food we had in Matera. All in all I am very pleased with

We stayed at the Palazzo degli Abati in Matera for two nights recently in the Bamm’n junior suite. This is not a ‘cave’ room and we did not want to book a cave room as I was concerned about darkness and humidity. The room was very pretty, clean, spacious and has a large bathroom. The view from the shared terrace is quite nice and the lights of the sassi are beautiful in the evening. We enjoyed a bottle of wine on the terrace one evening prior to heading to dinner and had breakfast on the terrace in the morning. The location is perfect with restaurants nearby, yet away from the tourist center of sassi and town. The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful; some of the best from our 2-week trip. It was a bit warm during our stay and we were unable to get the air conditioning to work. It’s possible it had already been turned off for the season; there were screens on the windows so we kept the windows opened at night which helped, and it was not too noisy leaving them open. I would definitely recommend staying at this wonderful boutique hotel.

We stayed two nights during off season and we loved it. The owners were friendly, hospitable and made us feel at home. In addition to the complimentary breakfast we had a great home made dinner accompanied by couple bottles of excellent home made wine. The facility is located few kilometers out of Matera in a quiet rural setting. Very clean rooms with good wifi. Compared to other hotels in the area it is also an excellent value.

The room is exactly to my taste: tastefully decorated, definitely not cluttered, comfortable to relax between walks around the city and to the opposite hill, sparkling clean, a water boiler to make tea and coffee, a soothing beige-white two-story room where we slept heavenly. Antonella is a gracious host. And the location is perfect, in a lovely old part of the city, very close to fabulous restaurants and you will find an open coffee bar around the corner in "Italian-"early mornings.

My family did not actually stay at this hotel but while we were visiting Matera we stopped in to share a bottle of wine and take in the view from the hotels outdoor seating. While we were there the lady running the front desk talked to us about the hotel and the history of the rooms and even showed us around. Her name is Giovanna and she was so friendly and kind. We enjoyed speaking to her and the information she gave us. We enjoyed the hotel and her company so much we even went back the next morning for a coffee and to say goodbye to her as we were leaving. Hopefully one day we will get to visit Matera again and stay at this beautiful hotel. I encourage everyone to stay here as I was very impressed by the rooms, dinning area and the staff are so welcoming and friendly. Thank you Giovanna for your hospitality and time, we really enjoyed are time with you!

I stayed in their loft room this past week with a family of four (two teenagers) . This small hotel is run by warm, authentic locals who live and work in the town. The view from the rooms and from the reception area is unbelievably gorgeous. It's hard to believe that the vista laid out before your eyes is real. The reception area is modern and beautiful yet rustic at the same time. The loft/suite itself was absolutely magnificent with a barrel vault ceiling of stone, a large loft that comfortably sleeps two in separate beds and a privacy curtain. Finally, this particular suite featured the most beautiful shower we have ever experienced. Large, cut into stone, and beautifully lit with natural light through spilling in through a clear ceiling. We would give this place ten stars if we could.

We stayed at the Sant'Angelo hotel for 4 nights in January 2020. We stayed in Room 52, and I have to say that the view from the room was absolutely unique and breath-taking. The room had its own balcony on three sides and from here it was possible to look across Matera and Piazza San Pietro Caveoso. The facilities in the room were excellent and the breakfast service was also perfect. The room was completely silent and we slept very well in an excellent bed (very large and comfortable). The staff at reception were extremely professional and friendly.

The Alle Malve is very well located in the historic Sassi district of Matera - the location could not be beaten to experience this unique place. The owner, Gianvito, is a mine of information and cannnot do enough to help you. The recommendations of places to visit and eat were really helpful. The breakfast was nice and again the staff were lovely. I would suggest contacting Gianvito in advance to get recommendations on parking and how to get cases to the property. The sassi district is off limits for cars although it is possible to enter temporarily to drop bags (not easy though). There is a good multi storey car park 3-400m up hill from Alle Malve but you need to know where to find it! Gianvito called us in advance to giove us instructions - but unfortunately we ignored his call as we were not expecting it. We loved Matera and the Alle Malve was a great location - just right for us.
