The entrance to the hotel is at the side of the Lawson store. The hotel is small with less than 10 rooms. Everything looks new, neat and tidy. The reception was very warm and check-in was fast. While language was a barrier, it was interesting that the staff made efforts to communicate using an electronic translator device. The staff were superb in their hospitality. The room was reasonably large, very neat, clean and tidy. The bed was comfortable. Breakfast was good and served in the room. There is only a toilet and washbasin in the room. Bathing can be done in the common shower area and hotbath pool located downstairs. The location is directly across the bus terminal; and a short 3 minutes easy walk to the main attraction, namely the Yubatake and the town centre. Wifi is free, so is the hotel car parking. Outside the hotel is a free public thermal footbath pool. Food can be found in many places, including just outside the hotel.

Sakurai is one of the biggest hotel in kusatsu onsen. However their public bath uses 100%fresh onsen water from two different types of hot springs. One is a clear water, the other ones are white water. They're both great. I visit this ryokan annually with my family. My kid has severe food allergies (dairy, wheat, egg, nuts, sesame) but they always make special meal for my kid. Staff are very kind. You can choose table service dinner or buffet. I've been both, and they were both great. They make buffet dish fresh, not frozen meal. Some are with chef's station (sushi, steak grill, tempura etc). From 730pm they have a Japanese Taiko drum show and dance. From 8, yumomi experience show. If you join the performance, you get ¥500 ($6) voucher for a souvenir shop. Very relaxing ryokan. Most rooms are renovated and nice. Easy walk to yubatake but they offer free shuttle from the hotel too. Very recommended!!

Room was very clean and spacious (for Japan-standards). Beds and pillows were comfy. We enjoyed the private baths – the only drawback is that there are only four of them and you may have to wait for your turn during peak hours. But with so many public onsens in the vicinity, this was not an issue. Breakfast was traditional Japanese fare and delicious. Refreshments (water, coffee, tea, some flavoured drinks) were made available throughout the day in the dining area. Service was commendable, even though there was a slight language barrier (we encountered only one English-speaking staff during our stay). Location was great. We were about a five-minute walk away from the Yubatake, bus terminal and the nearest convenience store. Many good food options around, some opening until late. Considering the price, our expectations were exceeded.

Rooms are spacious, although we took the biggest family room (living room + sleeping area), we had a peek at 2 double room, it’s spacious too. The staff are very nice and friendly. There’s a little misunderstanding on room arrangement, though with a little language barrier it was resolved quite quickly after staff (think he’s the owner) clarified with Expedia. Unexpectedly sumptuous buffet breakfast provided for free in the morning, although it was stated a “simple breakfast”. they have a baby stroller for rent, hiking sticks as well.( not sure fee needed). Separate gender onsen provided at basement. Amenities are provided, even sanitary pads for ladies. Although the morning is up to 2 degree c

Ctrip.com has made the picture and the hotel worse. Maybe the two names are similar. They are all Kusatsu Onsen. The picture is a large hot spring hotel, history, it should be very expensive, we went to the store but did not find the name of the reservation, we know that it is worse. Actually this hotel is not far away, it is Western-style, without hot springs, a little small, but very warm. Good location, a few minutes walk is the center of Kusatsu, the night view is beautiful. Breakfast is simpler, there are many small shops on the street, you can have breakfast. Can't have an extra bed, the room is small. You can bring your child. Parking is tight, but there is a larger parking lot nearby. Kusatsu is beautiful and worth a visit.

One of the things we really liked about this ryokan is its accessibility to Kusatsu Bus Terminal (5min walk), the town's central, Yubatake (5min walk), and Sainokawara Park. It was also very family-friendly. We brought our 1-year old baby along and there were no problems. The ryokan's staff were very accommodating and they brought colouring books for her entertainment during dinner. Not all ryokans accept infants so this experience was very pleasant for us. Meals were held at the restaurant instead of in the room. I would have liked the setup in the room for a more authentic experience. However, dining at their restaurant was also very pleasant as it had good views of its Japanese garden which was particularly breathtaking during winter when it was partially covered in marshmallowy snow. Food wise, portion and taste met expectations. There were private onsens for booking but these were really pricey. We went for its public onsens which were separated into male and female. Both male and female onsens have indoor and outdoor pools which also had views of their Japanese gardens. There were no crowds- most of the time I had the whole place to myself. The onsens were also very clean and were well-equipped with amenities and good quality toiletries from Shiseido. The ryokan's staff cannot speak English. However, this was not a problem for us as they had signs with some basic translation in English. They also had a few Taiwanese staff, which made things even easier for us as we could converse in Mandarin. Guests could choose their yukata at the lobby and there were a variety of pretty designs to choose from. It was better than some other ryokans I've stayed which provided plain designs at a lower quality. However, it also lacked the personal touch in the sense that the staff do not teach you how to wear them- there is an instruction manual provided in the room. I would recommend this ryokan to families with young children.

I reached the hotel via self-drive and arrived at around 4pm. During the check-in process, I felt that they discriminated between local japanese guests and foreign guests as the service provided was very different. The japanese guests were brought to their rooms and luggage was also delivered directly to their rooms. However, we were left to ourselves to carry our own luggage out of the car and over to the room. No pleasantries by the reception was offered. Maybe the hotel can clarify was because we were staying in the annex wing? I have been to other ryokans and the luggage was always sent to our rooms and we were always briefed by the hotel staff on the facilities. I would expect better service given the price we paid for it. We had a dinner and breakfast meal plan. The food was only so-so. Interestingly ,the tv turns on by itself at 7am . Not sure who set the alarm but it came out by itself and scared my socks off. I think that for the price we paid, the service was lacking. I would venture out to try other hotels in the vicinity. Only convenience was that the in-house onsen was located at the annexe wing on the 3rd floor which was in the same block i stayed in. The hotel check out time was 10am and you could only keep your car there till 12pm. Honestly. if you are not strapped for location, try elsewhere. This hotel charges too high for the service it provides.

It is convenient for the hotel to have a shuttle bus to and from Karuizawa, but reservation is required. The snacks provided by the restaurant are much better than the dinner. The ramen provided by the night and night is delicious but very salty, and the whole day is edematous. The overall feeling of the soup is very good, the hotel environment is comfortable, there are people who can speak Chinese, you can rent a hotel yukata to wear Kusatsu Onsen Street, look forward to the next time!

Lovely traditional hotel with great old world charm. The onsens in the hotel are definitely a plus as you can retire to your room after a session without having to endure the external elements particularly when it is snowing. Very responsive staff. As others have mentioned, the building is mainly of light structure and as such you can hear sounds from rooms around / above you. How loud it gets is luck of the draw with the other guests staying at the hotel at the same time. For us it was generally ok and the hotel experience outweighed this negative

Me and my wife spent couple of nights at Kusatsu Onsen Boun in July 2019. The hotel is about 10 mins walk from the Kusatus bus terminal. If you are carrying luggage with you, you should call the hotel and they will send the shuttle bus to pick you up. Not suggest to walk to the hotel with luggage because there are some up and down slopes/hills. The hotel looks like having a refurbishment recently because the new wing of the hotel looks new and grand. But we stayed at the main building which is comparative old. The room and public bathroom are basic, but the onsen is wonderful. You should soak yourselves two or three times a day in the onsent and feel the total relaxation. The staff are very friendly. Although they speak very limited English, they would still try to assist and answer your enquiries. The food at the dinner is extravagent. You would be seated in a private room or cubical to enjoy the meal made of seasonal food. I give 5 stars because the wonderful onsen and the friendly services.

We have fantastic time at Kusatsu Onsen Gensen Ichinoyu. We’re in love with this place! The service is fantastic, everything will kindly be arranged for you. The room was really comfortable, with an amazing bed. The Onsen was clean and the water was hot and healing. We would definitely recommend Gensen Ichinoyu to everyone. We loved our stay and we miss the place!

Very nice resort around 15 minutes away from the center of Kusatsu (the Yubatake). You can play bowling, ping pong, ski, karaoke and other activities there. The Onsen is very nice too where you can relax too. The breakfast and dinner are buffet style (included in the price generally) and they are very good both. I really recommend to go here specially on winter so you can enjoy the skiing (extra price) and see the landscape full of snow.
