We chose to stay in Nasu Onsen 那須温泉, a spread out hotspring on the slope of Mt. Nasu. Yumoto 湯本 is the centre of the area, with many ryokans located, including the one we booked for the evening: Sanraku 那須温泉 山楽. This ryokan was started in 1923, visited by Emperor Showa 天皇昭和 before he decided to build his own imperial villa in Nasu, so there is a saying that his villa was inspired by the ryokan. It has a really beautiful backdrop of Nasu’s main peak: Chausudake 茶臼岳. The ryokan has prided itself with its hotspring, directly fed from the source 5.4 km away, with an abundance flow of 800 litres per minute. The ryokan made use of the gradual drop of temperature over distance to cool down the water and this hotspring is the same feeding the royal villa. We have booked the Modern Japanese Room with Garden Open-Air Bath. The bedroom is spacious (10 mats), with the veranda looking out at the garden, where there is a footbath along with the nice open-air bath with flowing hotspring, direct from source without heating or filtration. There are also two open and two indoor public baths, separately for male and female guests. The ryokan was not busy and so I had the whole bath for myself. I am particularly impressed by the open bath, created as a pool surrounded by the forest offering calm and tranquility. The other great feature was certainly the quality of the hotspring. Simple Onsen 単純温泉 in style, the semi-clear water has no smell, slightly alkaline and giving a nice smoothing experience. I felt all my neck pain gone after the soak and no wonder it was famous for healing properties. The ryokan also had a nice lobby with plenty of comfortable sofas looking at the window to the beautifully trimmed garden. Offering tea, coffee as well as wine and sake free for guests, we had a relaxing moment before returning to the room and got ready for dinner. Dinner is served at the private dining room Yumatsuki. We chose not to dine in room to avoid the smell of the food. All the dishes were fantastic in taste and plating, a true feast of flavors, texture and enjoyment. I also had the local sake Tentaka 天鷹, one of the most popular in Tochigi.

We've stayed at this hotel several times and love 1) the twice daily buffet included, 2) wonderful onsens, 3) it's OK to walk around the whole place in the provided yakuta (kimono) and slippers, 4) they swap the ladies side and men's side so you can experience both onsens. It's been many years since we last stayed there. This time the reasons the rating isn't excellent: a) they still prefer cash vs. credit card (10% discount if you pay in cash), b) they eliminated the herbal and sake onsen baths which made the place even more unique (and were among my favorite baths).

We are so lucky to have Nina as our wedding planner, her extraordinary arrangement made our lives so much easier. As we are long distance couple (my husband is in Canada and I'm in Hong Kong), Skype meeting was setup to discuss wedding details. Nina can speak fluent Mandarin, English and Japanese so communication is not a problem at all. Having alpacas in pre-wedding photos and wedding ceremony is always my dream and I still can't believe it comes true! Hotel Epinard Nasu is superb, staff are friendly and helpful (shout out to Igarashi-san and Kumi!). They served great varieties of breakfast and the onsen is so relaxing! Some of my friends arrived hotel very late at night, hotel is still able to arrange pick up service from JR station. It is definitely the most memorable and unique wedding party to us and all our guests, we will visit this hotel again in our next anniversaries ♪(*^^)o∀*∀o(^^*)♪

Having travelled many parts of Japan and stayed in beautiful onsen hotels, this one had to top it all. Pun aside, the hotel is perched on the fringe of the Japanese Alps (Mount Nasu) with beautiful surrounding foliage/forest and gorgeous mountain view The hotel seemed pretty new otherwise the management have upkept and maintained the place very well. We stayed on the 4th floor. The room is rather large overlooking the forest . The room came with came with a Nespresso coffee machine and it s accompanying coffee capsules. They also provide elaborate and smart-ooking yukatas (you can choose the beige or blue colour ones) . I also love their elaborate fine dining meals. At dinner it was a large spread of kaiseiki Japanese meals, where pains and attention are paid to the details, serving and meals prepared. I like their onsen facilities the most with indoor and outdoor baths. The outdoor baths of different variety (silky baths, and the tubs ones with varying temperaturs) comes with an amazing view of the Japanese Alps. After your bath, you can pamper yourself with the lotions and moisturisers. They even have free ice cream for you! One the best onsen hotels in terms of cleanliness, view and facilities.
