We needed a hotel for a night as we were in the area and Takachiho is quite literally in the middle of no where. This is one of the few hotels that have better reviews. We had a non smoking twin room on the 4th floor and it was fine. Enough space for the both of us with a small couch and table and fridge. Japanese bathroom was clean and cosy. Bed was comfortable. Breakfast was included and Japanese buffet style - salad bar, boiled eggs, rice, soup and pickles and small items. There was also bread and yoghurt with cereal but not a lot. There’s no bath or gym or the likes. There is a large car park that’s free for guests and a FamilyMart that’s connected by the lift at floor B1. There’s a few things around the area like a supermarket up the road (you would need to drive there) and a small restaurant across the road. Otherwise, come prepared as they don’t have a dinner restaurant within the hotel. Rated 5/5 for the area and what was available but by no means does it mean it is the best hotel we stayed at.

We went during autumn season so the vibrant colors of the trees infront of the hotel contrasted with the black background of the hotel front entrance. Moreover the hotel has a small garden in the front with a a flat water area that reflects the nature opposite to it beautifully, and you can enjoy this serene scene while eating breakfast (haven't tried it, but it looked very promising). The front desk area is designed mainly with modern wooden design with some urban wooden pieces, it was a very empressing hotel from a design point of view. As for the room we chose one with a twin bed, and the room was spacious really spacious we had room for one large and one medium luggage to place on the floor and still had enough leg room to move around. The bathroom was divided into three parts: a toilet (electronic) seperated by a door and a shower also seperated by a door and finally the sink was outside beside the water kettle, a very spacious room like i said. There was also a table with two chairs by the side of the window which overlooked the beautiful autumn scenery. The price was very reasonable for what the hotel offered. However there's no room service, but it's compensated by the extensive amount of restaurant, cafes and convenience stores located around the hotel (the staff handed us plenty of brouchers including surrounding restaurant guide, attraction guide and area map). And last but not least, the staff, i have to say, even though they suffered a little with English they still managed to deliver the information in an understandable way, i asked for many things when i first arrived including how to send my luggage to the airport and booking the takachiho bus to Kumamoto airport, they were very detailed in taking the information from me and even called the bus station and reserved a ticket for me (you have to pick up the ticket by yourself though from the bus station /5mins away by car). And every thing was ready within less than half an hour. I would definitely recommend this hotel for a quick passing by moyazaki especially to visit takachiho gorge (GORGEOUS /definitely take the boat ride and try rowing to the waterfall, had so much fun and laughs while rowing XD)

We had booked typical Japanese Ryokan for two nights and it is a very nice stay. Is actually in the city center and you can find a lot of restaurants around. If you travel by bus it is also within walking distance. We stay in here because we want to visit a very waterfall and temple around. A lovely town to visit. Room is very big and clean. Staffs are nice and they speak "okay" English, is good enough already. Breakfast is good. The only thing might need to improve a bit is the hot spring on the top floor. A bit dated facilities. I will recommend this hotel to everyone visiting this area.

This is a family run hotel and the staff are extremely lovely. There is a newer part of this hotel that we unfortunately did not stay in. Our room was in the main building where you would find the reception area, the lobby, a small gift shop, the onsen and where the restaurant rooms are located. Our room was located on the third floor, which was one level up from the reception. To reach this floor you do need to climb up a steep flight of stairs - the staff are willing to help you with your luggage. Our room was only small but sufficient. We had the tatami mats on the floor with a small low table with the low backed chairs. There was a small fridge stocked with water, a small TV with only Japanese stations, the toilet was separate to the bathroom. There was a very small bath and a wet area for the shower.. The towels provided were extremely small for Westerners. The dinner and breakfast that was provided was excellent - presentation was beyond belief, quality of food was so fresh and quantity was a bit overboard. The staff were so lovely. Upon returning from dinner, our futons had been set up with a little treat for us, such a lovely touch. I would definitely recommend anyone wanting to experience sleeping on the floor Japanese style to stay here. The onsen is only small. The views were spectacular overlooking the snow on the mountains = just beautiful. Thank you for providing great service and singing a song prior to our meals.

We loved our 2-night stay at Ryokan Shinsen - everything here was near perfection, with fantastic and caring service, an outstanding room (we had one of the smaller villas with a private outdoor bath, and beautifully landscaped garden) with very comfortable beds and lots of space, superb bathroom amenities and Japanese bath facilities, and lavish breakfasts and dinners that were always served in different settings: Ryokan Shinsen has expanded quite a bit - sign of its success, so we could sample a first dinner in the original main building in a private tatami room, a second dinner in the just-opened new wing of the hotel with fantastic gardens, and breakfast near our villa). A dress-up service for the women for dinner with a choice of free Kimono is also offered - a nice experience, and great for wonderful picture memories. Not much we could suggest to improve - only (as somewhat usual in Japan) it was impossible to truly darken the room to sleep fully, forcing light-sensitive sleepers like me to get up somewhat early in the summers. Also the food presentation was outstanding, likely the most elaborate we have experienced on our multiple trips to Japan - though the taste did not always match that, and was sometimes rather bland. We highly recommend Ryokan Shinsen, it‘s a beautiful place is you seek a bit of reclusion from this world and private time as a couple or family, and want to experience the stunning beauty of the Takachiho area: the gorge is somewhat overrated (at least for a European living in Switzerland), but the countless views and incredible waterfalls (would particularly recommend Unoko Falls, near Gokase) make it worth exploring the area.
