One year into the pandemic I felt it was about time to have a proper vacation. My original plan - like last year - was to go skiing in the Rockies, however, like last year, US borders remained closed and as a consequence this was not an option. I had heard that Thailand had opened its borders to 56 countries under a program called COE. In order to be permitted to enter Thailand under this program, visitors need to purchase a Thai issued health insurance for the duration of their intended stay. For visa free travelers, the permitted duration of stay is 45 days, which can be extended in Thailand one time by another 45 days. After submitting evidence of insurance to the respective Thai embassy, visitors need to submit the confirmation for their Alternative Local Quarantine (ALQ) accommodation. In Thailand quarantine has to be spent at the port of entry. Most flights to Thailand go to Bangkok. However, big cities tend to be dense and quarantine there would have been in a city hotel - of which there are >130 to choose from. Phuket on the other hand also offers villa accommodations, however, came with the problem of not being reachable directly from overseas. In the past, many international airlines had direct flights to Phuket, however, these have been suspended since March 2020. However, Singapore Airlines started twice weekly service to Phuket in early February. I was on the third such flight and selected Anantara Suites and Villas as my ALQ, as the only villa resort participating in the program. Accommodations range from one bedroom suites to three bedroom villas with two pools. I reserved a one bedroom pool villa, which came with a lanai in the garden, swimming pool, outdoor patio, large living, bed- and bathroom with two outdoor showers. The package included three daily three course meals from an extensive menu along with soft drinks (alcohol is not permitted during ALQ) and medical supervision by an onsite nurse and Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Cleaning was provided on days 7, 9, 11 and 13. It is worth to note that ALQ in Thailand is stated as 14 days, which is an international standard. However, in Thailand the clock does not start ticking when the door to the room is closed, as is the case elsewhere, but only at midnight on the day of arrival, effectively resulting in a 15-day quarantine period. As my next destination was China, which restricts flights to one per week per route, the result was that I had to spend a third week in Thailand, during which I was able to move freely. With 200m^2 of space plus the outdoor areas and swimming pool at no stage I felt locked in during my ALQ. The staff and medical personnel were always courteous and happy to help. For those that do plan to travel during the pandemic and have a good time during quarantine, having done three more quarantines already, this was definitely the best and the only one that did not feel like one.

Based on the Mai Khao Beach of Phuket's more secluded northwest coast and Set between the sands of sun-blessed beaches and the rolling green backdrop of verdant hills, the Anantara Phuket Villas is only a short drive from Phuket International Airport. Designed to recall a quaint Southern Thai style village, the architecture complements its natural setting, with open-air spaces and arched ceilings to take advantage of the cool sea breezes. The interiors embrace contemporary Thai design, by using evocative local prints, textiles, paintings and relaxed lounge spaces. Guest can start a day with a hearty breakfast at the all-day dining restaurant and chat over with family and friends at the pool bar. As the sun sets over the Andaman Sea, feasting on European and Asian fusion cuisine at the on-site restaurant before moving on to admire the views from the Rooftop Bar.

The first time I stayed at Renaissance, I felt very good! We arrived early in the morning, and the front desk was very welcoming, but reminded everyone to say clearly the room type booked, otherwise it may be wrong! We also thoughtfully upgrade the membership, so that the child's breakfast every day Only 200 baht! The environment is very natural, I feel living in the virgin forest, I hear many birdsongs every day, but the room is still quiet! The beach is nice, private and few people!

The location is good, if you want to be away from crowds, and not far from the airport. The beach is the longest in Phuket , nice but not the best. The place is a mix of camping site and small cabins with some chickens and turkeys around and no big buildings around, apart from the beautiful Hotel Renassaince on one side. We took one of the cabins, and there are ok, but the best was to hard for us and we couldn´t rest properly, so we changed our reservation from 11 nights to 4 nights and changed hotel. The staff was young and fine, but the food quite limited and the drinks expensive. The best thing is that is in front of the beach and not big buildings or crowds around.

I went here after arriving at Phuket airport because they advertised as campground. It is a beautiful big green grassed campground with a pond. The facilities are very new and clean. Phuket is an expensive island and camping here is only 250 baht. The owners are lovely people and they will help you with everything. There was a big storm coming and they told me to take my tent inside the communal living room and oh did it rain for the next hours, so I was very happy with that. They also let me store my bicycle box free of charge. When I unpacked my bike I saw a big hole in the box and it turned out one of my front wheel spacers was gone. The man of the house was so kind to make me a new spacer from a pipe that had the correct diameter, without that my trip could not have started! When I returned 2 weeks later they remembered they were so very welcoming again! She offered me the bungalow for only 900 baht including breakfast. The bungalows are very new and big with fridge, kettle, aircon, fan, tv, desk and more. Well worth my last bahts :-) she even offered to take me and my bike to the airport for 300 baht, that is less than half the price taxi company ask. I would definitely recommend this place.

Patong Beach
Breakfast was good, can order muffins, various eggs and potato wedges for cooking. Just a few minutes walk to Patong Beach, watched a very beautiful sunset, the sand is very fine, we also played motorboat. There are exchanges, convenience stores, and pharmacies next to the hotel, which are very convenient. It takes 10 minutes to walk to the bar street and shopping mall, and there are many restaurants. We have eaten twice in the opposite place. I gave a cocktail to the bar upon check-in. The taste was good and the welcome drink was delicious. The service is good and the attitude is good. The front desk speaks some Chinese. The bedding was very, very comfortable, perfect except that the sound insulation was not too good, the rooms close to the street were a bit noisy, but it did not affect sleep and would come again.

Bang Tao Beach
Stayed for the second time in three years and checked in for a long time. A Chinese-speaking girl was friendly and helped coordinate the three rooms together. The hotel facilities are a bit old, clean and good. It is still expanding, and it is noisy to live in the lake area near the beach. The next day, the toilet is not replaced with new toiletries, and the water is quickly replenished. If it ’s lost, it ’s better to have breakfast in the past. A swimming pool around the resort (the water is shallower) and a pool opposite the beach (the depth of the water) are good. There is a shuttle bus from the resort to the markets at the entrance of the hotel and the resort. The market has snacks. It ’s more convenient to buy things with the whole family. It ’s easy to grab a taxi to the airport. The hotel is too expensive. The overall is good, the price changes a lot, from more than seven hundred to nearly two thousand. It is suitable for rest after the lively Padang. Three days, highly recommended.

Rawai Beach
The location is very deep in the alley. You need to use google map to search the hotel name for the correct address. We found the wrong car and checked our luggage for over half an hour at the Ctrip address. It is very suitable for a hotel. The design is modern and exquisite. You can't count it. There are several swimming pools, and the gym has 3 floors. The restaurant serves Western food. There are no local Thai and Chinese food. A few dishes ordered at dinner are very tasteful. The breakfast bread is good, others are average, but ordering at the restaurant (omelette, etc.) is also charged separately. The living experience is not good. The bed is very soft and sleeps like a night without sleep (I usually get used to sleeping harder, most hotels are fine). Without conditioner, slippers are very cheap and disposable. There are no movies on TV. It is recommended to live in a pool view room. There is a happy home roadside shop near the hotel. Thai cuisine is great! Next time, I may go to live nearby because of this roadside stall (it is a restaurant opened by a family. We were looking for a hotel on this first day and asked for directions. The kind owner actually asked his son to drive us by a delivery scooter. Sent to the hotel, but also refused to charge us the travel expenses ...)

Karon Beach
There is a security guard to say hello to you when you go out. When you meet strangers, you will be asked about the situation, so the security is good. The villa is of a very good size and can be used for children. Children especially like private small pools, but older children are more suitable for large pools! Nice environment and privacy. The parking lot is said to be free. Next time, you can consider renting a car and driving yourself.

Patong Beach
The hotel is strategically located in Patong, the downtown area of Phuket. The downstairs is a 7-11 convenience store. It is a 10-minute walk to the West Cold business district, with big C, night market and large shopping malls. The hotel is only a small room. The noise is a bit loud. Come to Phuket with your own dental equipment.
