The accomodation is perfectly positioned in St John’s - very close to the centre, in amongst the beautiful jelly bean houses (of which it is one), walking distance to everything. The house is beautifully restored and has some gorgeous features. So why 4 stars? I realise as I am getting older that an en-suite bathroom and toilet are essential which is my issue as we knew they were shared before booking. What I didn’t realise was there are only two showers and three toilets (2 toilets and one shower down stairs) - this does seem a bit light for the number of people at full occupancy. Some people are not very clean and/or tidy when sharing which must be challenging for the host, Bill. It was quite warm in St John’s on our first three nights and the room we were in at the front of the house was warm and windows were not able to be opened. On our return we had a much bigger room at the rear and the windows were able to be opened which was great and much more comfortable. My final little niggle was around parking. The B and B advertises free parking but it was problematic on our first stay. We obtained a car on our third day as we were travelling the Baccalieu trail and we also wished to see some of the Irish trail. There were not enough parking permits and we had to park down the street at a metre and make sure to move the car or put money in by 9am. Parking is very tight in St John’s so we totally understood but I think the information is a little misleading because if all guests have a car and the B and B is full the advertised can not necessarily be fulfilled. Suggest “parking may be available” or some such. No trouble with obtaining a permit on our return.

We started our 19 day vacation to Newfoundland on August 24 and booked our first 3 nights at the Abba. We were pleased when we checked in to see that our king room was on the top floor (room #5) with a great view all the way to the harbour. The room was nice and the king bed was very comfortable. The bathroom had plenty of room and seemed to have been recently renovated. Check in was easy, exactly as described in the hotel confirmation, with an envelope in the entry with the key. We were able to park on the street, almost in front of the hotel, and simply did as instructed and phoned the housekeeper’s number provided in the room and a parking pass was delivered within about 15 minutes. The breakfast is basic, but again was exactly as described in the hotel info and was enough to get us started for the day. The location was great for walking to all of the centrally located sites. There is some traffic in front of the hotel during the day but at night it was very quiet. We decided to spend our last 2 nights, September 10 and 11, at the Abba and when we arrived found that we had a queen room on the main floor (room #1). This was fine with us as we were tired of hauling our suitcases up and down stairs. The room was on the front of the hotel so still had a nice view of the row of colorful houses across the street. We just weren’t able to see all the way to the harbour, which was fine as we had seen lots of beautiful scenery on our trip. The bathroom was older and had a small shower but was adequate for 2 nights. The bed, however, was very uncomfortable. It sagged in the middle so we both ended up rolling into the center of it. We emailed the booking agency and asked if we could switch to another room and were told that there were none available. We asked if we could move to another one of the properties associated with the Abba but were told that we would have to cancel our reservation and try to make a new booking. We decided that it wasn’t worth moving but were definitely not as impressed with the hotel as when we stayed in the king room. The bed definitely needs to be replaced. We would stay at this hotel again as the price and location were good but we would need some assurance that the bed would be decent.

This hotel is in a great location right on the harbourfront in the middle of town. When I first investigated it, reservations allowed me to access their very good CAA/AAA rate with an Australian car club card, but I saw a yet better new rate, stay three nights and pay for two. When I went to book it the next morning, however, the rate had disappeared, so I inquired what had happened. I was told that it was a promotion that wasn't approved and it shouldn't have been put on the website, but as I'd seen it I could have it. Now that's what I call top customer service. When I arrived Reception staff were super-friendly, made sure I could have my room though it was three hours before check-in time, and when they heard I had walked from St. John's airport they said I must be sure to stay hydrated and handed me a large bottle of mineral water. Nice. The room was fairly small but the bathroom was spacious; decor is modern Scandinavian, there's a desk with adjustable chair, and it's well supplied with power outlets and USB ports (and a Nespresso machine). Extremely comfortable bed and pillows, and a big TV with a huge range of stations. My room faced the harbour and the view of ships coming and going was great. There is also a sun terrace right on the waterfront, a lovely place to sit (socially distanced tables) in good weather. I'll definitely stay here again.

You know how sometimes you look at hotel rooms online and when you see them in person they look nothing like the picture? Not the case here, we loved our room. It looked exactly like advertised and we were so surprised about its size, it was a huge room with high ceilings and even a small balcony. The hotel's location is prime, only about 10 mins to Water street, George street and few mins to the Basilica. Just behind the hotel you can find Bannerman park and many other sights. Breakfast was simple and it starts at 8am. They offer some cereals, milk, coffee, bread, and muffins, but there is a fridge and you are free to buy some groceries and prepare your own, as we did. We bought cold colds, cheese, yogurts and fruit and complemented our breakfast. Make sure you label your food as many might be confused to think the hotel provides these items. Our room was clean when we got there but after our 2 night there we had to call housekeeping for new towels. We requested a main floor room as my mother has mobility issues and were happy with our choice as the stairs looked very steep. Our bed wasnt made during our stay despite leaving the sign on the door. As explained by the housekeeper, this is due to the pandemic and they do not enter rooms unless requested which is understandable. Parking is free just behind the property, but it is very tight, I did see an F150 parked there so kudos to that driver! We really loved our stay and will definitely book again on our next trip to St Johns.

We stayed for 5 nights and were assigned a most unique and spacious room with beautiful woodwork and a nice jacuzzi. The hotel took extra measures to sanitize the rooms and common areas during the pandemic. Our room was sealed on the door and even the TV remote control was placed inside a sealed plastic bag with our arrival date written on it. A clean and comfortable room. Despite the pandemic, there was an assortment of breakfast food items available. All processed food was individually wrapped for safety reasons and there were brown bags to carry items to the rooms. Murray Premises is located next to Water street and in easy walking distance to many downtown shops and restaurants/pubs. We really appreciated the hotel's free parking. Special thanks to Steve, Adam and Allie who graciously assisted us while we were there. They were most helpful. Murray Premises will definitely be our hotel of choice every time we visit St John's in the future.

I booked my stay for a business trip into St. John’s. It was also my first legit trip into Newfoundland, so I didn’t know what to expect. Based on the pictures I saw online, the Courtyard was not the most appealing one – room seemed dated, and the hotel itself seemed rather inn-like. I decided to still give it a try though because of the positive reviews, and let me tell you: they did not disappoint me. When I arrived I was truly pleasantly surprised by how they treated me as a Platinum Elite member, which is still a few levels away from top tier for Marriott. The two ladies that assisted me with check-in were extremely welcoming, upbeat and knowledgeable. They acknowledged my elite status, offered me the welcome gift options, and upgraded me into a full-size suite with a water view. And it was not only them that impressed me – every single staff member I encountered were on the same level i.e. consistently warm and positive. COVID has turned this world upside down but the people here seemed to have their own idea, and I really appreciate the positivity they were showing during this hard time. My suite itself was roomy, and although it wasn’t the most appealing suite appearance-wise, it’s got all the features I can ask for, including a smart TV. The view was enjoyable during sunny days and in my opinion even better when it rained. Parking was convenient and most importantly free. The hotel does feature a restaurant, however the hours didn’t work with my schedule which was a shame. The only “problem” that I had was that the noises from the heavy equipment/cranes/ships sometimes do start quite early – I’m talking 6am early. I did have to wear earplugs to go back to sleep after I was woken up one morning. Though to my surprise this only happened during my first day here – my sleeps were great the next few nights. All in all, like I said, the Courtyard isn’t necessarily the best-looking hotel in town. It’s not the fanciest either, and it’s got its imperfect quirks. But the people here truly made a difference. I’m glad I chose this hotel as my first stop in Newfoundland, as it definitely set a positive tone to my entire week-long visit.

We stayed here over Xmas. The check in was quick and efficient. The room had a great view, was large and well laid out. We tried the restaurant, Exile for dinner and had a great very tasty meal with an exceptional server. We asked for extra toiletries in the evening and were told they were locked up and we would get them in the morning. The night was good. A quiet sleep with a good bed. The next day we awoke and as we were leaving we asked for the toiletries and were told there were none and there wild be no cleaning services on the 25th or 26th!!! We have travelled all over the world for Xmas for the last 30 years and this is the first time we are ever heard of anything like this. I understand wanting to give staff vacation time but not having staff to clean is unusual. Having one staff come in to remove garbage and change towels is not to much to ask. We did manage to get towels later in the day. The front desk staff on the 25 and 26th seemed like they wanted to be anywhere but there. But I will say the lady on the night of the 26th was friendly. My wife has stayed at this hotel before and bragged it up, but All I can say is do not say at Xmas. There are much better values for your money in the area. I am unsure of if services are cut during other holiday times. Honestly is lacking from this hotel. They should say if services are not offered. It should not be something that needs to be found out through questions afterwards. I do not know if services were cut to give staff time off or to save money, but I suspect it was to save money as I think there were less than 10 rooms booked. In my opinion if you want to be promoted as an upscale hotel act like one. If you want to cut back on services during a period, close your doors for the holidays. We liked the location, loved the restaurant, enjoyed the view, were impressed by the decor of the lobby and entrance but unfortunately we cannot look past bad service and staff and cannot recommend this hotel.

I arrived |St. John's 6pm on an Air Canada flight from Halifax. The City of St. John's had been declared a STATE OF EMERGENCY. I took a taxi to the Monastery Hotel arriving there around 7pm. Everything in the City had been shutdown for 4 days except hotels and essential services and taxis. I asked at the front desk when I checked in if there was anywhere one could get something to eat....Absolutely everything was closed. Front desk staff said if I did find something to advise them as they would like to order something to eat as well. Approx 45 minutes later there was a knock on my hotel room door and a very nice young lady who had checked me in was at the door with a surprise COMPLIMENTARY dinner that was very good and very much appreciated. I did not ask where it came from as their cafe was closed. Anyway, it was a very pleasant surprise, and these 2 fabulous people that were on the front desk duty that evening deserve all the kudos in the world for going above and beyond to provide a tired hungry traveller with a dinner. Thank you Monastery Hotel....I will be back.

I've heard this hotel is undergoing renovations. Unfortunately I was placed on the first floor which is the last to receive these upgrades. Being not to my taste, out of date, and musty smelling is something I can look past. However I cannot look past the security risk. I checked into the hotel at around 10pm, placed my belongings in my room and went out for about an hour. When I returned I got ready for bed and called home. My husband asked if my hotel had a door. I said yes, there was the usual door to the hallway and a door to the adjoining room. He said when he stayed there previously on a business trip his room had a door leading to a small ground level veranda. So I got up to check and behind a floor length window curtain, there was a door to the outside world - and it was OPEN! Completely open about 2-3 inches and unsecured right there at ground level. I had no idea this door was even there because of the curtain. I had to try to close the door several times before it latched properly. When I finally managed to close it I locked it for the remainder of my stay. My guess is that the last occupants of the room used the door and didn't realize the door wasn't properly shut. However, I would think that making sure the doors are properly closed and locked would be part of the cleaning staffs checklist. I kindly mentioned this issue to the front desk staff when I checked out, and their response was very nonchalant. It was as though they knew they had door problems and were used to the issue. I never even received a simple "Sorry that happened" apology. Any acknowledgement of the severity of the issue would have been appreciated. I hope that the renovations to this hotel include new doors, and better trained staff on all ends.

My husband Travels frequently, using the Hilton as his place to stay. Therefore he is now a diamond member and often gets enough points so that he can stay free. I have stayed at this location approximately four times since January. Although it’s nothing outright, I have noticed the quality of the cleanliness of the rooms has gone down since coming to this hotel. I’m not sure if it’s because it was new when I started to come here or if they are short staffed, But there were several things in my room I actually had to write down because of the cleanliness. There were visible handprints on the glass window. When I went to use the washroom initially there was Toilet paper in the toilet, as if someone had used it before I came in. There was garbage debris near the coffee station, they were also hand prints that were visible in the shower. There were several places on the floor when I first arrived in the room that had road salt on it. There was a wind ring from a cup that was not washed off the surface. As well as several hairs on the same surface. When I used one of the towels to dry my face in the morning, there was a distinct foul odour coming from it. I had to re-wash my face I was so disgusted. One other thing to note is that the restaurant still doesn’t have menus. Which makes it awkward when you’re trying to order breakfast and they have to list off what they serve. The previous time I had stayed before this day, I don’t know if it was close to being over but when I went down to breakfast it was very obvious they were starting to close up the kitchen. My breakfast was slapped together- eggs were not what I asked for, and was given microwave bacon. Positives of this place are that the staff are quite friendly, especially at the restaurant. The pool is nice, not as warm as they advertise but it’s still nice. And when the rooms are actually cleaned properly, they are really quite lovely. Someone made a comment about paper cups, I would have to agree that maybe they should consider an alternative.

My visit to St. John’s was supposed to be 4 nights at the Capital Hotel. We arrived on Wednesday and Thursday evening the storm started. We left the hotel 12 days after we checked in! We Staff were caught at the hotel as well as the guests. Staff worked shift after shift without a break, without relief. They fed us excellent food, gave excellent service even though we knew they were beat!! Some staff started on Wednesday and never got home until the following Tuesday. They had to work around the clock! We got to joe them all and at all times we were treated with respect. We started calling them family. They gave professional and courteous service but more they made us feel at home. I commend them all, management, Cooke, servers, housekeeping, maintenance and bartenders. I can only say thank you, thank you. We will be back.., p.s. The white chocolate bake apple dessert was delicious and very low in carbs and sugar!!

We stayed for four nights. We have been to many hotels and this was by far the best hotel we’ve ever stayed in. Our room and my parents room was very clean and comfortable. My parents had a joining room with us, a king suite. We had a double queen room. We had a mini fridge and microwave. My parents suite was absolutely amazing, it had tons of room for our children to play in. Lots of room for all of us to comfortably hang out. Breakfast was lovely every morning. It was served from 7-10am. There was always something different made each day. Along with fruit cups, smoothies, granola bars and cereal. Always lots to satisfy everyone. During our stay I used the washer and dryer, which worked really well. It was $2 per wash and $2 per hour dry. We also used the pool during our stay. They allowed one hour per family. We had to book it in advance. It was cleaned before and after each use due to COVID which was appreciated. The staff was amazing. Everyone was always there if you needed anything or had and questions. Katie, Taylor and John were amazing during our stay. So friendly, helpful and welcoming. Thank you again to them. I chose this hotel because of the price and I’m so glad I did. We had an amazing stay and can’t wait until next time.

This is our go to spot whenever we go to the city. They are always super friendly and our dog loves her little treat bag she gets each time!

Buying a room with breakfast included still means you have to pay for juice and coffe or if you want something extra. Never seen this before.
