0.24km from Spirit of NewfoundlandWe started our 19 day vacation to Newfoundland on August 24 and booked our first 3 nights at the Abba. We were pleased when we checked in to see that our king room was on the top floor (room #5) with a great view all the way to the harbour. The room was nice and the king bed was very comfortable. The bathroom had plenty of room and seemed to have been recently renovated. Check in was easy, exactly as described in the hotel confirmation, with an envelope in the entry with the key. We were able to park on the street, almost in front of the hotel, and simply did as instructed and phoned the housekeeper’s number provided in the room and a parking pass was delivered within about 15 minutes. The breakfast is basic, but again was exactly as described in the hotel info and was enough to get us started for the day. The location was great for walking to all of the centrally located sites. There is some traffic in front of the hotel during the day but at night it was very quiet. We decided to spend our last 2 nights, September 10 and 11, at the Abba and when we arrived found that we had a queen room on the main floor (room #1). This was fine with us as we were tired of hauling our suitcases up and down stairs. The room was on the front of the hotel so still had a nice view of the row of colorful houses across the street. We just weren’t able to see all the way to the harbour, which was fine as we had seen lots of beautiful scenery on our trip. The bathroom was older and had a small shower but was adequate for 2 nights. The bed, however, was very uncomfortable. It sagged in the middle so we both ended up rolling into the center of it. We emailed the booking agency and asked if we could switch to another room and were told that there were none available. We asked if we could move to another one of the properties associated with the Abba but were told that we would have to cancel our reservation and try to make a new booking. We decided that it wasn’t worth moving but were definitely not as impressed with the hotel as when we stayed in the king room. The bed definitely needs to be replaced. We would stay at this hotel again as the price and location were good but we would need some assurance that the bed would be decent.
