I stayed here for one night only. I chose this hostel since it's unbeatable regarding the price and location. Within just 5 minutes you can walk to the peace park and A-bomb dome. A tram station is even closer. When entering you have to put off your shoes and are right in the "living room" as well as the reception. My check-in was a little confusing, since apparently one of the longer staying guests was substituing the manager, who wasn't in the hostel at the time. He explained everything to me as best as he could though. A big plus are the check-in and -out times, since you can check in until evening and when checking out you have time until 11 AM, which is very considerate. If you need a towel you have to pay an extra fee of 200 ¥ (if I remember correctly). There are at least 2 rooms with multiple bedrooms. I stayed in the women only room, which had 8 bunk beds. The beds are built pretty closed, as you can see in the pictures. There is only one opening where you can enter (with a curtain as screen). The rest is closed. My bed was kind of prepared, but I had to do the linen myself. Also the futon was quite worn, I coult feel the wooden blanks beneath me every minute while lying down, which was very uncomfortable. The facility was very clean, especially the bathroom (there's 2 bathrooms with 1 toilet each) and showers (1 shower room with 2 secluded showers), from what I can tell. There is even a shared kitchen, where you can prepare your food if you want (I didn't need it though). Foods and drinks aren't allowed in the bedrooms. You get codes to enter after 10 PM through the front door and another to enter the female only bedroom at all times. There was free Wi-Fi, but I didn't use it, so I can't say anything about the speed or cennection. There were notes everywhere saying that this isn't a party hostel and to keep quiet between 10 PM and 8 AM, but when I was in bed (after 10 PM), I could hear some people in the "living room" chatting loudly and even singing/playing guitar. I'm glad I still can sleep with some noises around, but for people who can't it might be annoying. I was defenitely missing a locker. There are small lockers in the "living room", but only for valuables. I had to put my stuff in the bed (which luckily has the space for it), but it was still kind of annoying to share the space with my luggage. Fortunately I only had regular backpacks and bags and no big backpack or suitcase with me. If you have bigger luggage, you have to find some space in the room or leave it in the hallway. The staff was very friendly and tried to help where they could. All in all the stay was okay, but I'm not sure if I would stay there again... but maybe I'm just not a hostel person and expected too much. :)

This apartment was in a good location. It is closer to tram stop for direct access to Hiroshima train station. You can walk to the Atomic bomb site and a Peace Park. There are a couple of supermarkets (7-11) close by as well. The apartment is advertised as 2 bedrooms, this is a bit of a stretch, there is 1 bedroom, and another area in the living room that has 2 beds that can be closed off with shutters. The beds are futons so need to be aware if you shave older people with you (we had my mum) that is is t so easy to get up and down to the bed. The room is very basic but comfortable. Bed was comfortable and the shower was good.

This is the best hostel that I have stayed in with so many extras provided that are rarely seen in a hotel, let alone a hostel. As soon as you walk in you are greeted with a seeming 'zen garden' which doubles as the downstairs restaurant/bar. Unfortunately I never ate here but the menu always made me wish I had! The staff are extremely friendly and will go above and beyond to help. Now those extras I mentioned? Every day you can collect a fresh towel and face towel (EVERY other hostel charges between 50 - 200yen per day for this), the bathrooms provide free toothbrushes, razors and body sponges should you require them. Breakfast is provided (a seeming luxury across Japan) in the form of toast and miso soup. Coffee and tea can be purchased at the ridiculously inexpensive cost of 100 and 50 yen respectively. The rooms from the bedrooms/dorms to the shower rooms all continue an apparent decor theme of a clash between traditional and modern Japan (That's how I interpreted it anyway) and it just works in creating a calm and soothing environment. The beds are up there with the most comfortable I have slept on in Japan and the capsules are spacious with every bed assigned a drying/hanger in the dorm and an extra in your capsule. Lastly, the location is perfect! A short walk to Hiroshima Castle and the Peace walks/memorials. Furthermore, Miyajima is easily accessible from the hostel both quickly and cost effectively. I could go on and on but please, make sure you make Kawate-Ya the one you stay at for your stay in Hiroshoma!

Very good modern hotel in an excellent location. Easy short walk to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Easy short bus from the JR station to the hotel. Surrounding streets have good food options, shops etc. Our room was comfy and cosy. Small but very clean and modern private toilet/shower room. Downstairs communal area was nice and spacious. Friendly staff and nice touches like origami instructions on the downstairs tables :). Also convenient luggage storage facility. Thanks for a great stay!

We booked one of their twin rooms and not the ryokan room. It was one of the most spacious rooms on our Japan trip. Very clean and a nice private bathroom. The couple that runs the place were awesome. Very short easy walk to the Peace Park. Convenient to transportation also. They stored our bags for us while we toured. We loved the couple that ran this place and found them to be very nice. Would stay here again.

I can`t stress enough how wonderful the staff members are!! During my stay (four nights) all of the staff were warmhearted, welcoming and totally lovely! Thank you Misaki, Mai, Marie and Banchan! In the Hostel bar you can easily meet people from the neighbourhood and other hostel guests. There`s also a common area only for hostel guests, with a kitchen and fridge. The shower is really spacious, you can use shampoo, conditioner, body soap for free. The design of the sinks is very cute and there`s even more free stuff next to them. The bed is comofortable and you have enough space to put away your backpack. Shin-Hakushima JR station is only 3min away, and by walking (25min) you can reach the Peace Memorial Museum and Park, the Hiroshima castle (15min). You will get a self-drawn map so you can discover the area around Roku, don`t miss out on those places! I just loved my stay here, I am definitely going to come again!

A nights stay in a Ryokan in Hiroshima - Sera Bekkan, When we set out on our 15 night trip to Japan we had decided that we must experience a stay in a Ryokan. We were in Japan during the peak cherry blossom season & all the hotel rates had moved up substantially & we felt the full brunt especially as we had decided on this trip just a few weeks earlier. We zeroed in on Ryokan Sera Bekkan in Hiroshima. A comparatively small establishment & within walking distance to the Peace Memorial. The day was bad with a constant drizzle which reduced our enthusiasm & we shelved the idea of going across to Miya Jima. The room was very large with a sitting area &the traditional sliding doors separated the living & bedroom. This area was covered with tatami mats, a 4 seater small legged table with chairs without legs to go with it. The tea set was well laid out on the table. There was a small sit-out looking outwards. There was a mini-kitchenette & separate WC & Bath areas. After the extra small rooms that we had stayed in Tokyo & Osaka this place was palatial. In the evenings the table & chairs were moved to the side & mattresses were put on the floor. In the storage area on the side there were enough & more mattresses in case one was not used to the low slung sleeping position & wanted the sleeping mattresses to be higher! Probably the decision to skip Miya Jima was to enjoy the Ryokan ! We had a lovely night’s sleep & in the morning we were served a typical Japanese breakfast with miso soup, egg to order, a piece of fish, a tofu preparation which was simmering on a burner & a few other items which we had not been exposed to – overall this breakfast was different & quite enjoyable, if for no other reason, than it being an unique experience! We enjoyed our stay in Sera Bekkan no complaints other than that our credit card at check-out didn't seem to connect. So lost some time as we had to give 2 other cards before the matter was sorted out & we did have to rush a bit as we were heading for Osaka & the shinkasen which had a track record of being 36 seconds late was not going to wait for us. The rush to the station was successful & we were in time to board the shinkasen. Overall our experience in Ryokan Sera Bekkan was definitely enjoyable.

I stayed here for two nights and it was an average stay. This was probably my worst stay in Japan but that does not mean it was a bad one. The rooms were not as clean as others, the bathroom is tiny even for Japan. It is more of a hostel I think rather than a hotel as they have a whole hostel-type area. There is lots to eat and drink in the area and it is very close to the train and tram station so access around the city is easy although it is only about a 25 minute walk to the Hiroshima Peace Park. Good value for money but I would probably upgrade to a better property if I were here again. It serves its job, location is good for access, amenities abound outside. I cannot fault this hotel I just cannot praise it.
