We were visting from NYC, where we are used to high hotel prices, but we were astonished by the prices in Portland last weekend--including at the Inn at St. John. The Inn is located across from Maine Medical Center--it's construction Zone, actually. It is a short run/walk to the Western Promenade, which is very beautiful and worth the climb. However, it is not really near any other real attractions of the city. Our room (double with private bath) was very small and dated (it is an historic inn, so I don't mind the antique furnishings...everything was just a little on the shabby side). However, it was very clean. Bath could use some updating as well. The ”closet” had hardly any space to hang clothes. There was a table and chairs, and a chest of drawers, which was great. Continental breakfast was fine but average--hard-boiled eggs, cereal, store-bought muffins, etc. You're better off walking over to Holy Donuts and standing in line for their treats. All-day coffee/tea and snacks are a nice touch, however. Also, there was no maid service at all--no towel exchange or tidying up the room. Our check-in staff on Friday were extremely helpful and friendly; kudos to them for helping my husband up the stairs with his luggage. Other staff were also friendly, although we didn't have much interaction with them. We just expected a bit more of a homey atmosphere and a bit more comfort in our surroundings for the price.

Just a few minutes from downtown Portland at very reasonable rate. Very clean and in excellent condition. Self serve breakfast (no pre-packaged bag). Staff was efficient, friendly and helpful. Gave accurate and useful information about the area. Staff took initiative to see something and respond quickly. One morning the desk clerk noticed that dining room was filling and guests were looking at outside patio. He immediately went out to patio and wiped down tables and chairs so guests would be comfortable.

4.5 stars We stayed one night while passing through Portland on the way home. Check-in was quick and friendly. The lobby is nice. Room was clean, spacious, and updated. Bed was comfortable. Front desk staff were helpful. Location is great! We had a couple of great walks to dinner or to get coffee. The Old Port neighborhood was cute! We ordered room service for breakfast. Service was slower than expected due to staffing issues, but we both enjoyed our meals. We didn’t get to take advantage of the spa or restaurant, but if we find ourselves in Portland again, we definitely will. We always have nice experiences at Westins, and this stay was no different.

Great location tho it wasn't situation in the heart of downtown. Clean and bright room. Due to the covid the housekeeping service wasn't delivered during the 3 nights we stayed. The price was extremely expensive (actually all hotels in the whole Portland). Anyhow, great spacious room and I had a pleasant stay.

Not worth the money they charge. The gentleman at the front desk did not seem to like or know his job his job. He made errors at check in by. Hanging the wrong credit card, never sent luggage to the room and did not seem to care in the least each time we tried to get the situation rectified. At checkout we were mistakenly charged for a meal. There was total confusion on the hotels part to resolve. Spoke to the front desk manager at the time of checkout, called and spoke to Pat the front desk manager a few day later. He told me he would look into the charges and call me back that same day, he never returned my call. Call a few day later and asked for the hotel manager, Micheal, explained the situation about the incorrectly charged meal. He said he would look into it and call me it two days, he never returned the call as he said he would. Had to call the hotel again, no more than a week later. Spoke to another manager who said he figured out the issue and credited my credit card a few days earlier. Still have not seen the credit. Not impressed with the service at all. Anyone can make a mistake in a bill but it is how it is dealt with that determines the customers experience. The managers at this hotel don’t seem to understand customer service. Very surprising but true.

We stayed one night before flying home after a family event. We ran out of wipes for the 1 year old and the staff put our Uber CVS order in the room for us. They also provided a travel crib. Then, my 5 year old started vomiting in the middle of the night and the front desk staff provided us with extra linens not once, but TWICE. The service from start to finish was amazing and I will definitely stay here again when visiting Portland. Oh yeah- rooms large and clean, good breakfast, great downtown location!

I stayed at this hotel for a week on business. The room was clean and comfortable, the amenities were great-full kitchen, full-size fridge and microwave, stove, pots/pans, all the dishes, glassware and utensils you'd need. I slept really well-didn't notice any noise from the street. It was really convenient and the view of the harbor with all the huge cruise ships coming in and out was super cool. The staff was great-particularly Rashad and Tim at the front desk-very helpful, friendly and professional. The location was very convenient to the Old Port area. Really enjoyed my stay.

We made a last minute decision to take a trip from the NYC area up to Portland to attend an event, and with Labor Day weekend traffic, we did not arrive until about 11:30PM at night with 3 exhausted kids. We were pleasantly surprised with this hotel -- the kids slept in the bedroom and my husband and I slept on the pull-out couch in the living room area of the suite. I was anticipating noise because of the proximity to the airport, but we never heard a single plane! When we requested extra towels, pillows, blankets, etc they were brought up in a timely fashion by a friendly and helpful staff member. The included breakfast was a really nice perk -- everyone had plenty of options (one of our travel companions is vegan and had options). My husband in particular enjoyed the freshly made omlets.

We were very comfortable in our deluxe waterview room for three nights. The room was clean and spacious with nice bedding and giant windows that allowed us to enjoy the activity around the port. We were a little apprehensive about the lively crowd and the loud music across the street on our first night, but at 10:00 p.m. all was quiet. However, with parking and the cost of breakfast, we paid over $1500 for those three nights. Even with the great location and the view, that was well beyond anything we've paid before--anywhere.

The Hilton Garden Inn Portland Airport was comfortable and clean. It is located a few miles from the airport but has a complimentary shuttle. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and very clean. The lobby is open and offers comfortable seating in a nicely decorated area, convenient to wait or have a small discussion, The staff are friendly and informative. It was disappointing that the hotel was still not offering its standard breakfast and dinner, due to COVID restrictions. We decided to do a night out in Portland. I am originally from there...born and raised, but live in Kittery now. Decided to check out the press hotel and union restaurant for brunch. Honestly, it was all ”Meh”. Hotel was nice, clean and convenient to Old Port. It is however, overdone, overpriced and overhyped. Too much with the press quotes all over the place, the tyewriters, printing press parts, etc etc. I get it. Its the Portland Press Herald's old building. Our room was $400 after taxes and had a view of the fire station parking lot. It was tiny, bed uncomfortable, pillows unusable (ordered new pillows which helped, but the oversized ”feather” pillows were covered in something like crepe paper). Bathroom had no fan, stupid quotes all over the place signifying nothing. I don't really understand how other hotels in the Port are like $150 a night for the same thing while this is more than double. The experience? It was too much by half. Seems to me this is there to bilk tourists out of a few extra dollars playing on Portland's history, which I don't get--the Press Herald is still around, just not in that building. Maybe its there for the new hipster crowd in Portland to part with some of their money, who knows. Traveling to Portland and want to stay downtown? Stay at one of the other cheaper hotels. Same exerience, half the price. Remember, no matter how hard you try, Portland is not Boston and its not New York. Mariott missed with this one.

April School vacation we planned a one night stay-cation at the Ramada. I should have known better, being that we live less than a few miles away from the Ramada. But, I unfortunately trusted the 3 star rating. We live near the Clarion hotel and we were looking for step up from that hotel. We were looking a simple hotel that felt safe, clean, decent food, and had a pool. The Ramada failed on all fronts! The only good thing about this hotel is the exceptionally patient staff behind the front desk. This staff has an incredibly hard job. While trying to perform their jobs, they are constantly monitoring unwelcome guests and guest who have been served far too much alcohol at their bar and restaurant. This creates a unsafe space for hotel employees and guests. We were a party of three one adult and two children under the age of 10. My children both expressed feeling unsafe while we were outside of our room. One of many incidents included a very intoxicated man who was a hotel guest at their bar. He came towards us calling my children his children and walked right into a wall, and fell down right in front of them. They have never knowingly seen a drunk person. Now thanks to our stay at the Ramada they have. This was one of many experiences we had that led us to feel unsafe outside of our room. In our room there was a pubic hair on the ice bucket tray. The rooms are dingy and bathrooms feel very worn in and dirty. We made sure our doors were bolted and secure. The doors felt secure with the exception of the patio door but we were on the 3rd floor. We did have dinner at the Seasons restaurant. Skip the food and get dessert. The desserts were really good. The mozzarella sticks we ordered only one actually had cheese in it. The tater tots were freezer burned and you could taste that even though they were smothered in cheese. Finally the pool and hot tubs. Algae around the pool platform allows for an extra slippery surface and of course fungus. The hot tubs were very cloudy and felt a layer of slime on our skin after being in them. The pool lining is lifted in many areas and has a ring of dirt around the interior edges. In the early morning we found a non guest using the pool area to bath. Next time we are looking for a average hotel for a stay-cation that feels safe, clean, decent food and a pool we will choose the Clarion near our house. Or perhaps we will splurge and get a good quality hotel elsewhere in town.

Room was very clean. Staff was friendly. Best things: Beautiful new bed, thick comfy pillows, LOTS of GOOD LIGHTING, lots of hot water. Annoying things: confusing thermostat, really meager breakfast offerings. an electronic hum that seemed to come from outside the room. Although the building and furnishings are a little frayed around the edges, they nailed all the essentials. I'd recommend to anyone who is looking for a good value and can live with some imperfections.
