|3.9km from city centerThe Merilton Hotel is on some levels an OK basic Hotel however given the rates charged it is an utter disappointment. The entrance areas are scruffy which doesn't create a good first impression. On to the room, we booked what was described as a family suite. A liberal use of term, taking liberty with description would be apt. For a start there is a kettle and two mugs but no basics such as tea, coffee and creamer. Onto the TV it didn't work. A sofa bed, I assume this is the qualifier for family suite, is a bit of a broken wreck. Lean back and it folds out with a bang with the potential to cause injury. The bathroom is spacious and works well, if somewhat dark. Ironing, well it looks a bit Dickensian, please see picture for reference. It located in the corridor and is communal. Breakfast, both the room and what's on offer has to be seen to be believed, so I took a few pictures. Now onto the positives, yes there are a couple, the WiFi is very good. I was also impressed by the water refilling station in the corridor which dispensed free filtered water meaning bottles could be reused. The bed was very comfortable and the bed linen clean. That's it, as upon leaving there was a strong stench in the foyer of pee which invaded the nostrils. The question, would I return? An emphatic No on this one!

|3.81km from city centerMy staff has always been a regular client for this hotel. But this time around it was a huge huge disappointment. Approximately on the 28th of November 2019, my staff checked in for a week. On that particular day, she experienced a horrific situation. The night before at approximately 1.30am, the door bell rang twice. Out of fear, she remained silent till the door bell went off. Then at approximately 6pm, my staff called the house keeping to clean the room. Whilst the house keeper was in the room, an unknown man came barging in the room and proclaimed as the house keeper and shouted ”housekeeping!”. And the REAL housekeeper and my staff was shocked. And that man ran away!!... How horrible is that? What if something would have happened to my staff??? My staff immediately contacted the front desk and the ”real” housekeeper said that ”oh i thought its your friend” in malay language. My staff explained that even at 1.30am there was someone who rang the door bell. They replied ”oh theres a mistake on your doorbell”. REALLY????? This hotel is just outrageously horrible. We urged our staff to lodge a police report. But to keep things calmer she said lets let it go as it serves no purpose. She immediately checkout and got her husband to pick her up. The management of the hotel called the security in to check the floors and what about CCTV? not functional?? This is totally unacceptable. The manager furthermore, offered to take my staff out for dinner the next she comes. Bribery in place??? Im sorry but the next that this happens. I shall call the police instead. Cause the management is utter irrresponsible and THIS HOTEL IS UNSAFE FOR WOMEN!

Sungai Pasir
|3.64km from city centerThere is a lot to love about the Purest Hotel in Sungai Petani starting with the room decor. It reminded me of the style of many small boutique hotels I have stayed at in Northern Italy over the years. Simple stylish and elegant would sum it up. The breakfast spread here again ranks with some of the best I have experienced at any South East Asian Hotel. Catering no for both Western and Asian taste it offers a good selection to both. I ate a very satisfactory lunch in the restaurant on the ground floor on one day, which again was good quality. Vegetables that accompanied the dish were nicely presented on the plate and mercifully al dente, a feat that many hotels worldwide fail. Where it is let down: The marble bathroom floor, whilst stylish, is a virtual deathtrap when wet as it becomes dangerously slippy. This is as mentioned in previous reviews and could be solved with the simple addition of a rubber floor mat. Being a supposed 4 star hotel and given it has a swimming pool I would have expected bathrobes, but there were none. When I enquired I was told they were available at the pool, they were not. When I enquired at reception no one seemed to have a clue as to wheter they had them or not. I was eventually told they did not provide them. This, despite me having seen the same in the housekeeping laundry basket. The pool area is a bit of a mess with stacked chairs here and there and no staff until 4pm. In the meantime it's seems to be used by hotel staff wanting to have a smoke. The pool itself, whilst great, is missing a number of tiles which looks a bit shabby for a 4 star. Note to management, some umbrellas by the sun loungers would be great for shade in the scorching rooftop sunshine. Lastly, I ordered room service on one evening and it was delivered without cutlery or condiments to begin. The food itself, a chicken burger, completely tasteless so a disappointment. As I said to begin with a few well placed tweaks and this Hotel could be wonderful and warrent the claimed 4 stars. Would I stay again and would I recommend it? Absolutely!!

Sungai Pasir
|3.79km from city centerAn hotel to consider if you're planning a stay in Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia. The rooms are well equipped and maintained. Clearness is ensured. The room is equipped with simple and needed amenities including the coffee making facilities. The front office staff too put an happy face while checking in and out. There is no private parking here by the hotel but one can always park at the local authorities parking along the road. The hotel puts up the parking coupons for you on their experience. Overall a great stay. Nandakumaran Balamuniandy Room 409
