My first stay. All ok on arrival and room small but very clean. Breakfast included and typical of Japanese business hotels so not quite aligned with non-Japanese tastes. Overall a clean and good hotel.

Stayed here for 2 nights in May 2019, during Golden Week. It was pretty packed! Not many reviews were available when I decided to book this hotel but judging by photos and being new thought to check it out. We wanted to stay in this area as a base to explore Dewa Sanzan. It was beautifully designed, lots of timber, floor to ceiling glass letting natural light in. Our room was small, we had a double room. But given the ample storage space in the room, once we had put everything away actually had heaps of space to use. It was nice to just stay in our room and relax, which sometimes we don’t like doing in similar sized japanese business hotel rooms. We tried the restaurant for dinner one night, and breakfast included both mornings. There weren’t many options for dinner, so maybe not ideal for some people. We were happy with our spag bol and curry. Nice local beer too. Breakfast was buffet style, good variety and delicious. Tried the onsen one night, but it was quite packed, with lots of kids. Didn’t find it relaxing and preferred to shower in my room the following night. Because it was so busy as well the onsen was quite dirty. Hair blocking the drains, dirty floors in the change room. It’s not very big. It would probably be a different story though if it wasn’t so busy in the hotel. I’m pretty sure it was booked out when I was there. My husband went to the gym twice and enjoyed the equipment there. They had some great Technogym machines there. Overall we enjoyed our stay and it was something different in Japan to break up our stays in business hotels in the city and traditional ryokans in the country.

This small ryokan, with only 8 rooms, is situated in the Yudagawa Hot Spring town and features three reservable hot spring baths: two larger cypress baths and one semi-open-air bath with a view. The cuisine here is carefully prepared with a focus on local ingredients, and meals are served in a private setting for guests' enjoyment.

We arrived at Yutagama Onsen after sunset. The entire town was so quiet that we could hear ourselves breathing. GPS kept telling us we arrived at the destination but there was no sign of it. We had been circling for 5 mins in narrow streets till we realised the ryokan’s entrance was tucked 15m away from the main road, carpark was 50m away. We got off and staff brought our bags and led the way. A warm reception area to check in and we were led to our room shortly. The double storey room has the sitting area on the entry level with the bedroom and a private onsen on the top floor. Our meals were served in a private room with a nice Japanese garden view. Generous portion of food and an extensive list of local Yamagata sake. There are two public baths to switch between genders. Both were spacious. One had an interesting deco of an aquarium and another stone rabbits to touch up both indoor and outdoor bath. Value for money for a night with two meals at $450.

I just spent one night at Kameya for my graduation trip. I need some alone time. I have nothing to say except I will cherish this experience in Kameya. My roomwas on level 10, facing the sea of Japan; I could see sunset and sunrise from the window. The dinner was also excellent; they accommodated my diet restriction carefully. I also tried ther outdoor and indoor onsen (hotspring); again, I have no complain. The staffs werr also really helpful and understanding. Omotenashi, consideration of others; as dinner was served in the room, and the staff somehow knew that I didn’t want to be accompanied, so she excused herself as soon as she was done preparing the food, and came just after I finished the previous course. This kind of service I will miss so much when I leave Japan. Next time I visit Tsuruoka, I hope I can stay in Kameya with my partner and son.

This is an annex to a Buddhist temple - so its like a dormitory with big Japanese style rooms with paper-thin walls, and shared bath facilities. It is located right at the base of the many steps up to the temple, and on a bus route (in case you decide to ride the bus back down!) so very convenient. Food was wonderful vegetarian Japanese food served on western table and chairs - and the woman host was very pleasant a and accomodating - she prepared our breakfast for 5:30AM as we had to catch an early train , and she set up a taxi pickup for us at 6AM (for which I had asked a man in the train station tourist center to write the request in Japanese and I grabbed the card with phone number of the cab that brought us- so it was easy). She understand little English but enough so she could use her phone to google and read the English - very effective. They have walking sticks and umbrellas that you can borrow for your hike up the mountain!
