The Baslertor Hotel was close to where our daughter and her family lives, so we booked it when we came for a family visit. It was a little confusing at first as to where to go to unload our luggage and enter the hotel at 21:15 when there was no one at the reception. Good thing we called to say that we were checking in after 21:00 and there was someone there to tell us the door code and to look for our key on the Reception Desk. We drove our car to the back door, but there was no key pad so had to go around to the front through the road construction to find the key pad to get in. Then we had to try several doors to get out again and back to our car to drive to the COOP parking garage entrance on the street behind COOP. From there we were able to enter the hotel and take the elevator up to our room which was very clean and quiet. We were so thankful for the little fan because it was so hot and difficult to sleep. We opened the windows wide and thankfully were not bothered by mosquitos. A couple of times we had difficulty connecting to WiFi because there were too many people online, but learned to scroll down the Login page to the second option to register online as a hotel guest for unlimited usage. We enjoyed the coffee making supplies for our first cups in the morning and will definitely come again when we visit our daughter and her family again! Oh yes, and the top floors have 2-3 bedroom apartments with kitchenette & washing machines for longer stays.

Room was very bare, check in was smooth, but the hotel had quite a sterile feeling to it. Reception is quite far from the rooms which makes it feel very disjointed. The young girl at the reception was quite friendly and very helpful in checking me in and assisted me with ordering a taxi. Did not have breakfast as I was only there for 1 night and left the next morning so cannot comment much on the quality of the food. I did mention that the safe in the room was already locked therefore I could not use it, however i was told that they cannot do anything about that until the next day and if I wanted to use the Main Safe, I can, but I will not be able to access the reception until after 7 am the next morning since nobody will be available.

This is a fabulous place to stay. The house is absolutely beautiful, the couple who own it are lovely, you actually feel like you are staying with your family. I was there for a football match at FC Basel & the stadium is only one stop away from the house & it's only a 3 minute walk to the tram stop. They also give you a voucher to use which gives you free travel on local transport. I had free travel on the tram & bus which was fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble for the owners. I was actually early for my check in, but I was allowed in & offered a drink & sat talking with the lady for ages which made me feel very welcome. She also recommended somewhere to eat which was fantastic & also said to take some Swiss chocolate home which I did & it is very tasty! They also let me leave my stuff there the next day while I went exploring Basel. I can't speak highly enough of both of them, it really was like staying with family.

So this is one of the cheapest hotels in or near Basel (and best in mind this is Switzerland where everything is expensive compared to the UK). Our family of 5 stayed here twice on route to and from Italy, during Covid (14/08/20 and 20/08/20). Location isn’t great but it is 5 minutes off the motorway and hidden within an Industrial Estate. Look for the Lumimart lighting store with the MagicX sexshop above (with giant naked woman in the window, much to our teenage son’s delight). Hotel is setup well with good Covid protections in place. Restaurant is obviously closed but there’s a breakfast takeaway bag (coffee, orange juice, 2x mini croissants, bread roll and jams etc) available for 8CHF each and you’ll have to eat in your room as all communal areas are closed. We didn’t think it was great value and on our second visit, found a Conforama mall around the corner, a McDonalds and an Ikea that does breakfast but doesn’t open until 10am. There’s a coin coffee machine in the lobby 2.50CHF but it only takes Swiss franc coins and not euros. Staff on reception were polite, pleasant and efficient, and spoke multiple languages with a smile. Rooms are typical double with single bunk above. They’re clean and convenient. Don’t bring a cat though as you won’t be able to swing it around. You know it’s budget as there’s no locks on the bathroom door and the loo paper is that waxy stuff. But they’re clean and you can’t hear next door flushing. We booked two rooms during each visit and were always put next door to each other. One major negative that left a bad taste is having to pay 10CHF for parking in their narrow carpark. Second visit we parked on the road (no lines or notices) but we’re told we had to park in the carpark. Seriously? 10CHF for parking in an Industrial Estate with ample street parking around? Felt a bit conned, but it’s a cheap hotel and they have to make their money somehow. There is no restaurant here but there are multiple fooderies within walking distance. See my other review for Tado Restaurant which we went to twice because it was so good. All in all, will stay here again if passing through Basel.

I stayed here for three nights, in a female dorm that could fit 8. At the most there were four of us. The top had single beds and double beds, all bunk, and I got to choose whichever I preferred. I took a lower double one, and it was very good - mattress not too soft not too hard, the lamp worked, lovely blue fitted sheet, the blanket was a little short but warm goose feather quality. It was a little cold in the room, also because the windows are very large and only open the regular way so when you want to air the room you let in too much of the cold air. You get a free locker, and there are little tables and chairs too, to put stuff on. The toilets and shower facilities are great, very clean, everything working, enough soap and paper. I got a free towel (asked from reception). The showers are in individual booths, 29th a little bench to put your stiff on so it doesn't get wet. Also, huge plants, loved it! There is a laundry room, also with ironing facilities. The kitchen is fully equipped, fridge, induction plate cooking stove, electric kettle, microwave, all pots plates and cutlery. Nice eating area. There is the option of a 8 CHF breakfast, but the limited options (bread, bitter, cereal, OJ, coffee tea fruit) made me prefer to buy stuff from Aldi nearby. Nice lounge areas, books and board games, a small back courtyard and a large front one (as part of a complex of companies, restaurant, theatre - all in a former factory). Super awesome that you get the Basel Card included, all public transport free (including outskirts, I went to the Vitra complex and the Beyeler foundation) and 50% off for museum tickets. Good Wi-Fi, ask for a room with good reception. Very friendly staff.
