3.56km from Thomas-Morus-HausI just spent a week at the Chemnitzer Hof and enjoyed it very much. First, the good things: * Excellent breakfast buffet. It doesn't look all that big when you first walk in, but it has a great variety of appetizing foods. * Perfect location for the Chemnitz Oper. I was there for the Wagner Ring Cycle and the hotel is right across the plaza. * Pleasant, comfortable rooms. I had a single but, unlike some singles in some hotels, it was not cramped at all. ***And the best part of all: Wonderful and helpful service from the staff. I had some sudden medical issues and had to change my travel plans and find a driver to take me all the way to Vienna. I did find a travel agent who found some drivers but the prices were very high. I spoke with the hotel manager and before i knew it, he and staff members were doing everything they could to find a driver for me. After a few days they did--at a much lower price. And the driver turned out to be a fun and interesting guy. Thanks again to all who helped. Now for the negatives: * Not only is the hotel right next to the opera house (good) but also it is right next to a church whose loud bells ring seemingly at all hours (bad). The hotel does provide earplugs, which help, but this is a definite problem. * There is no a/c. This can be a major problem as it can get quite warm in Chemnitz. I was there in April and we did have some very warm days then--it will only get worse as summer comes. The hotel will kindly bring you a little fan but i was doing a lot of work in my room and even with the fan, it got quite warm. It did cool down in the nights and you can open the windows so that is nice. But if the hotel wants to be a truly fine hotel, it will have to bite the bullet and pay for a/c. In fact, I would not give it the 4-star rating it claims because of this alone. You have been warned if you will have a summer stay!
