Typical businessmen’s hotel with great service A great economical place with free Japanese breakfast. Exit the South gate and turn right; a couple of minutes walk. The rooms are compact but efficient -- clean and comfortable with enough space for working on laptop computers. LAN connection as well as WI-FI in all rooms and lobby area. Helpful friendly staff. Humidifier wasn’t in the usual place under the bed but when I asked the staff, they brought one up to the room quickly, already filled with water. We chose to stay in Shin Yamaguchi instead of Yamaguchi because we took the Shinkansen bullet train which runs directly only to here. The hotel is just across the very nice & new JR station. Exit North gate, go down escalator & you can see hotel. Pros 1. Modern nice hotel 2. Excellent location 3. Friendly warm staff Cons 1. Room is terribly small. & cramped. Just one big luggage takes up a big area of available space. Hardly any walking space- one needs to give way for other to cross. Feels cooped up, like living in a pigeon hole. 2. Double Bed is small for 2 persons & pillow is so thin - can't sleep well. 3. Staff don't speak English. One or two do try their best to understand a little but can't communicate. 4. Breakfast very limited but adequate for filling the stomach. It's not really free though as I believed it is already added into the rates as rates here are on the high side for this type of hotel class. 5. Vicinity around the hotel is very quiet at night. A dead town at night. No life. Shops closed very early around 5pm onwards as darkness falls in. Limited few dining options. Yamaguchi station is a better place to stay if one don't mind the inconvenience of taking another train, ( if taking Shinkansen to this place) which is about half hour away (about 7 stops). Personally, my feel is that the most important part of a hotel is the room. If one is cooped up & feel so stressed up in such a cramped room & cannot sleep well, then no point staying in this hotel even if other aspects are fine. I had reservations about booking this hotel after looking at review pictures but can't find a better hotel here that is near the station. But it is worse than expected.

We took awhile to find this hotel, it’s located around 15-20 mins walk from train station. Upon alighting from train station, simply walk straight all the way to enter Yuda Onsen area. You will see a Lawson shop, “Turn Left and walk all the way, cross the traffic light and walk straight. You will see the hotel right beside a fish restaurant. They have an open air carpark right at the doorstep. We arrived at 1pm and was told the room was not ready. So we went around the Yuda Onsen area to explore the place. There is no shops nearby, the nearest is to walk back to the Lawson at the main road to get something. Btw Lawson is just steps away from their tourist centre (there is a free foot bath). We were upgraded to their deluxe room which includes a massage chair (occupied quite a lot of space). The room was alright. Breakfast is provided. Simple Japanese style breakfast, nothing fancy. End up, we didn’t go for the cave visit as the bus frequency could not match with our schedule.

The room condition and the facilities are acceptable. I might be wrong but in general, the ryokan seems to target local tourists and the service is not very non-japanese speakers friendly. (It doesn't mean it's bad, the staffs are still very helpful and polite) There is a comedy performance every night at 8:45 pm. It's pretty funny, even for the person don't understand Japanese like myself. The onsen is alright. What I'd like is to have the outdoor onsen also got the shower facilities. So I don't need to do the shower, dress up and walk to the outdoor onsen. Location-wise, it's a little bit of a walk to get to the train station. For buses, it actually got a bus station on the other side, much closer to the main bus station on the main street or around the train station if you are going to Yamaguchi-shi. It's a nice experience and justifies the price.

The first time I stayed here was on a business trip a couple of years ago. The room was very old, dirty and smelly as it used to be a smoking room. I vowed never to stay there again. Fast forward to this week. Another business trip stay and I reluctantly agreed to stay there as everywhere else was fully booked. I was assured I had a Non-Smoking room. It was not. It was a disgustingly yellow, musty and grimy ****hole of a room! Just stepping out of the elevator, you are greeted with an absolutely disgusting stench from the hallway carpet that has gone from a light blue to a dark murky looking grey, I assume from never being cleaned/shampooed. The room upon entering was no better and I almost threw up, no kidding! The toilet/bathroom has a strip of paper with the word 'Sanitised' on it, on the toilet seat lid. The toilet itself had dark grey stripes inside the bowl. The shower curtain was speckled with mold and the light fixture had dust and lord knows what hanging off it! In the bedroom, the air vent was full of years worth of dust, and it showed on the ceiling with the stripes of grime blasted on the paper. The bedroom carpet was marginally better than the hallway one, but smelled almost as bad. Walls were covered in dirt and dust, with some areas showing peeling paper. The bed covers had HOLES in them!! I dared not sleep inside the bed itself and used the bath towel to lay down on. Upon returning late at night to my home the next day, my wife commented how she could still smell the place on my suit, which I have opted to trash rather than clean, and other clothing items are now soaking overnight to kill off any potential bugs. This hotel used to be a lovely place many many years ago, but it seems neither management nor owners, give a crap about the upkeep of the place. Old fixtures, dirty everything and a stench so bad you wouldn't want your worst enemy to stay there! The one saving grace is the breakfast menu was fresh and plentiful. If I could rate this place any lower, I would. I do NOT RECOMMEND staying here - EVER! Advice to management/owners: CLEAN YOUR HOTEL, UPGRADE EVERYTHING, Trash or BURN every single piece of bed linen, curtains, shower curtains and mattresses as well as that DISGUSTING EXCUSE OF A CARPET! Spend some MONEY ON YOUR BUSINESS! If it was up to me, you'd be SHUT DOWN as a HEALTH HAZARD! My wife and I (Japanese) will be finding out what we can do to report your overpriced ****HOLE and have you do something about it! The pictures I have provided do not show half the story - I have video too and will be happy to share!

The Japanese garden is so beautiful!! We stayed in a room on ground floor facing the garden. I think is the best onsen ryoken that I visited so far. Dinner was served in our room with a very professional lady (sorry I forgot her name)but need to be careful when picking what to eat. As my travel companion does not eat fish, the meal that I picked was with quite a lot of fugu (河豚) dish.... which is a popular dish in the area. But he enjoyed the history part so much! Also a must to try "Ishinoyu" 維新の湯. It's also good location to go to the SL Yamaguchi train trip after checking out next morning. Will surely visit this ryoken again!
