I was really impressed with this hotel and it's staff. I was based there for some mountain biking in the Cotswolds. The staff work very hard during a difficult time in this pandemic. I had booked my 3 night stay in advance, before the lockdown announcement and the manager Marleen was able to move my dates forward in order to avoid the lockdown and honoured the same price I paid earlier, even though it was more costly for my new dates. There is plenty of car parking and the main foyer has plenty of room to ensure there is social distancing. Breakfast during this covid pandemic is perfectly fine, you can eat in the restaurant or take it upstairs to your room. The asian lady who works in the restaurant is very hospitable and always welcomes you in the morning as if you were one of her own. My only issue and it has nothing to do with this hotel or its staff but more to do with the interior designers for Holiday Inn. The new designed room with the dark blue carpet and wall paint makes the room look very cold and uninviting, they need to brighten up the designs of the room although the rooms have everything you can desire. My room was really big and was easily able to store my bike in there without it becoming a nuisance even though the staff stated I could keep my bike in the Storage Room if required. My only other gripe would be a plug near the bed for those like me who like to use their technological gadgets lying on their lovely large beds.

I looked very last minute for a room in Swindon and got a lovely surprise for the price. I addes 2 extras, 5 more for late check out and 7.50 for breakfast. Check in was very quick, nice friendly guy near the automatic desk, room really close and loads of car parking Design of room is a little too stripey for me but the bed was great, very comfortable and I wish I could get hold of pillows like those. Loads of hot water and masses of room. The toiletries I thought were good too. I slept like a log and nobody bothered me until I got up. No housekeeping banging on the door which was fantastic!! (well worth a fiver). I do agree with one comment about the room heating. It was very warm. Too warm for me and no glasses for water. There were a couple of issues. I couldn't get a table in the restaurant and got a somewhat terse explanation about using room service. I went elsewhere but in the weather, that wasn't fun. However, it might have been a blessing as breakfast was awful. 2 cindered sausages, 1 tablespoon of beans, 2 bits of bacon and some very understirred and overcooked scramble egg. 1 cup of tea and 1 slice of toast. Really really not worth the money Overall I will be back as it suited me and was idealy placed for work. The room rate was a bargain but service and food let it down. There are far better places for food very close by but the bed was fabulous, hence the rating

Exceptionally quite with clean well fitted rooms. Onsite Restaurant mismatches B&B and the breakfast was average. The hostess owner was very friendly and accommodating to all my requests. The room was well fitted out with high quality bedding pillows and towels. The shower was wonderful but for safety, over a potentially slippy bath, a mat is needed. Perfectly quiet although within sight of motorway: sound sleep is assured. On the down side, TV reception is abysmal and even defeated the owner who graciously tried to make it work. A wi-fi connection worked but was useless. The speed was so slow it wouldn't even register on speedtest and a three word email languished in 'sending' status for the whole stay. If you don't have your own 3G connection you're scuppered. The drinks hospitality tray provision in the room was strangely miserly. Just 2 tea bags, 2 coffee sachets and two milk sachets: I'm sure more would have been provide if asked for: but you really shouldn't have to. The restaurant is only geared to high priced a la carte fine dining in a very formal setting. The only option for travelling B&B ers wanting something more relaxed and informal is a limited selection of room service pizzas and meals; not in my opinion a very cheerful option especially for families: and who wants lingering food odours in a bedroom? In fairness I note some listings have this as a restaurant with rooms, but as on the Saturday night I stayed the restaurant appeared only lightly occupied, I can't help thinking the owners are missing potential here. Fortunately Wollerton Bassett, is only a couple if miles away, and has a vibrant and varied selection of good restaurants, pubs and bars. The breakfast was a great disappointment in the light of comments by others, which had driven my selection of this particular establishment. I can only suspect such reviewers have not actually had many English Breakfasts to compare. The offering may not have been helped by the Chef proprietor not being involved on the Sunday morning of my stay. Freshly squeezed orange juice was a nice starter, after which the offer spiralled downwards. The Full English was just that: a single plate crammed artlessly with all the ingredients: in my opinion baked beans should always be served in a separate dish. The bacon was streaky, not the traditional back, overcooked to a chewy consistency. The tiny thin link sausages were likewise overcooked. The mixed shiitake and oyster mushrooms were tasteless and pointless: open cupped cultivated or field mushrooms would be far better. Fried bread was partially soaked from the beans juice. The only other additions were a couple of rounds of toast, (which initially arrived as warm bread) and a pot of tea. At £14.50 p.p. this hardly good value as an add on to the B&B prices. There was no offer of other juices, fruit, cereal, muesli, porridge or yoghurt which are normally included as a first course of a B&B Full English breakfast. Some of these

Today we went to investigate the lunch time menu at the Rolleston. I’d seen advertising that they did vegan options, so this appealed to me. We booked for 1.30 and were seated straight away. It’s not a posh place with trendy cocktails, it is more of a ‘spit and sawdust’ sort of place, but very friendly and lots of nice people and happy staff. My husband had lamb and said it was delicious. The vegan choice was excellent, probably five different items, I chose the mushroom wellington. This comes with a full roast. Potatoes, parsnips, carrots, cabbage and a nice rich gravy. Plus an amazing broccoli ‘cheese’, so yummy. That with a pint of Doombar. Well!!! There were lots of puds but my tum was very full.

The balconied rooms were what originally caught my eye at the Fox & Hounds whilst looking for some where to stay near to where we were visiting for the weekend. Having read the reviews as you do, we felt certain we would be in good hands. I have to say I am struggling to grasp quite, why some have left unfair and negative feedback! If we were to review in a nutshell, then I would have needed more boxes to check; we were made to feel so very welcome, all the staff we met during our stay were all polite, happy, friendly and extremely helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The couple that run this pub and accommodation, invite you in and make you feel so welcome it’s like you are part of the family. We arrived, parked easily in the rear carpark, checked in easily at the bar and was shown to our room. If you enjoy taking in the view, take a room with the balcony for sure, we sat very comfortably and watched the sun go down in between short walks back to the bar. It was then we realised “Danny” (if you are in room 4), was a working dog The general atmosphere in the bar was lively and upbeat and the ambience was just lovely, calm and relaxing. We felt no negativity at all, throughout our stay and locals sat along bar with the guests. The gardens whilst beautiful in the day, come to life at night with subtle lighting and offer a charming atmosphere, just delightful. We want to return when there is live music and we have been thinking about the end of the year too because we really did enjoy our stay. Everything you might need for your stay was provided in your room, ours was nicely laid out and comfortable. Big towels, decent mugs, proper kettle, lovely biscuits!! The shower was perfect for us, we are both tall and not skinny, even had room to wash your hair without banging your elbows. Every detail had been thought of and well presented. For us, we particularly enjoyed sitting out on the balcony in the evening after being out and about all day. Breakfast was one of the best cooked breakfast’s we have had in a while whilst staying overnight at various places, quality produce sourced locally…perfectly cooked, generous portions, well presented and a good choice of breakfast items if you do not fancy a full English…..just ask, as nothing is too much trouble to make sure you enjoy your stay. All in all, a brilliant place which we would like to keep to ourselves really, however; you would be sorry not to stay for a night or two, or be based for a week whilst you take in the local area. The management even think of their business clients and provide them with a complimentary breakfast bag when they leave, for busy execs on the go. Thanks to Paul, James, Monty, Jo, Ollie and the other staff we met, who did all they could for us to have a nice couple of days away.

This is a nice looking pub, lots of space and the food is OK, but the service can differ greatly! On our most recent trip a table of 10 booked in advance but the staff struggled to cope with this, one person behind the bar and then food orders were a disaster. Two out of four of us had all but eaten our food by the time everyone else's came out! 2 orders out of the remaining 8 weren't right, wrong chips, wrong burger etc and some of the sides were overdone. The saving grace was that some of the food was good, a reasonable price and some friendly staff.... I've also had better here. First the really good - the evening meal we had in the restaurant was superb. The leisure facilities too were really good - amongst the very best I've seen in a hotel in the UK. Decent size swimming pool and a very good gym for a hotel. Plus sauna, which was superbly hot (not a little warm as some are in hotels) and steam room. The breakfast was okay. Very good range of options (but strangely missing porridge). Good sausages, but cold bacon. Overdone fried eggs. Nice option to have waffles, pancakes and crumpets - which is unusual in a hotel of this price (and all of which were good). Coffee was poor and juice came out of a packet marked from concentrate before they diluted it and killed any hope of finding flavour in it. The breakfast service was very poor - 3 guys in their 20s hanging around the entrance chatting or looking at their phones. If asked to get something (like brown sauce or veggie sausages), they did, but it felt like it was too much work for them instead of doing what they were paid to do. Both Saturday and Sunday morning I noticed a mustard packet on the floor from Friday dinner (at best), which shows a lack of cleaning in the dining room (something that was a bit of a theme). The room was large, reasonable equipped and everything worked. Bed was a bit soft, but okay. Pillows were too tall and very uncomfortable. The problem was when I was looking for a light switch for the light above the bathroom mirror - I ran my hand over the top of the light switch and it was covered in dirty dust as it hadn't been cleaned in ages. Not the fault of the maids, as they are rarely lazy in any hotel, as it is a hard job, but the fault of management for not giving them enough time to clean properly and not checking it is cleaned. The biggest problem though was on Saturday evening - a couple were in drinking in the bar and brought their pet dogs in with them, which they encouraged to get up on the sofas in the bar and fall asleep, where they drooled and otherwise left the disgusting detritus from their bodies. This is disgustingly unhygienic and should not be allowed in any public place. They were there for at least a couple of hours, so no excuse for someone from the staff to notice them and ask the couple to leave. It explains why we felt the whole place was not being cleaned properly. Obviously there is a problem with hygiene in this hotel.

I booked SW B&B for 2 nights with my wife for the air show. We arrived by car and there was no problem with parking. The place is situated in a residential area which is nice and quiet at nights. On arrival our host Sarah welcomed us and showed our room. We had the Orchid room which has a double bed and plenty of space for 2 people. The room was nice and equipped with everything we needed. The first overall impression from the beginning was good which lasted during our stay. TV in the room had Netflix so plenty of movies to choose from. Even some games. The room was cleaned and refreshed after the night. The shared bathroom was hygienic and well looked after. We loved the little decorations all over the house. Breakfast was very good, freshly made. We were going to the air show by coach early in the morning from Swindon Bus Station. Sarah gave us a lift to the station and even supplied us with water and food as everything was overpriced at the venue. I would recommend this B&B and it’ll be the first place to check out for our next visit in the area.

Though I didn’t explore the surrounding setups, I found out that the hotel is within easy access to F & B establishments and shopping options. I have no qualms recommending hotels under the Thistle Express brand to friends and family. Needless to say, I will definitely choose to stay here again when I’m in Swindon.

We stayed at the hotel for three days. We found the staff very friendly, helpful and competent. The room was clean and the bed had a good mattress. The building is a very old house, so the floor was slightly uneven and the windows were of an old style, but this added, rather than detracted from our stay. The hotel was clean and tidy throughout, and comfortable. We ate at the hotel each evening and the food was excellent, tasty and filling. The days were warm enough for us to sit out on the terrace, which was also a treat, with the added bonus of being able to order a cream tea.

I recently visited the Sun Inn and honestly had one of my best hotel stays ever. This is nothing like you would expect from 'pub accomodation'! The room was generously sized, beautifully decorated and had all you could need. I was given such a warm welcome and was well looked after by staff who met my need for a 'take-away' breakfast in the morning. Beautifully looked after gardens/outdoor seating too - and clearly doggy-pub-heaven! A faultless stay, highly recommended. Sara.

We stayed here for a night on the way south for a funeral in Hampshire and we wanted to spend time visiting a couple of locations on the journey. We were allocated a really quiet room at the end of a corridor and away from busy roads and the beds were very comfortable, so we had a really good night's sleep. We choose twin bedded rooms as we prefer that in hotels and the room was plenty big enough, which is not always the case in twin rooms. The bathroom was in excellent condition and appeared fairly new. This is a full Holiday Inn and not a Holiday Inn Express as mentioned by a previous reviewer. We ate in the restaurant also had breakfast the next morning which is a full English breakfast as normal, though the chef needs to serve that to you when you go up to the counter, rather than the normal self service in Holiday Inns. At both meals the service and food was very good. The restaurant was quiet, but not totally deserted. The main plus for this hotel though is that in these covid times we felt totally safe as the hotel was spotless and they were obviously following very good procedures during the pandemic. We have stayed in three other English hotels this summer/autumn and we could not say that of all the others sadly. There were fewer staff than normal as there were far fewer residents in the hotel on the Friday night we stayed (16th Oct), but there was no shortage of staff to perform the necessary duties. Cindy, who was on reception and also seemed to keep an eye on the hotel in general, was a really good member of staff who is a great asset to the hotel. She was extremely friendly as well as being very efficient with her duties. Anything we asked her for (e.g. an extra sheet) was delivered to our room immediately. We stayed a week in the area of the funeral to take a short tourist break and had intended to travel home in one day, but decided to break our journey again in this hotel the following Friday and our experiences were just as good and Cindy was also on duty that week. The hotel in a good location to break our journey as there is plenty to do/see in the Wiltshire area and further south. Stonehenge is within easy reach and Avebury even nearer and a good place to visit. Going on that route also gave us chance to stop off at Salisbury and the new Forest, rather than taking our normal route via the A34 and the M3, which can be very busy and monotonous. We will definitely stay at this hotel again, perhaps for a longer stay as we felt there were other things to see/do within east travelling distance.

The Carpenters Arms South Marston How wonderful it has been that the over 70’s have been released from 5 months house arrest. Even better the Chancellor of the Exchequer has sort of apologised to Oldies by giving a state subsidy to those of us brave enough to venture out Monday to Wednesday. Monday 21 August I ventured to The Carpenters Arms South Marston having booked a table for one at 18.00. First many thanks Claire and Clare and all the staff for a warm welcome, your staff seemed as keen to welcome me, as I was returning to an old haunt. Great printed menu plus a few specials chalked on a board. There was a time before Covid when this traditional English Pub had one of the largest special’s boards in the Swindon Area. But we must now be realistic and rejoice that we are now allowed out. The printed menu had so many old favourites totally spoilt for choices after much thought I choose: - liver, onions, bacon, rich gravy, mash, garden peas. Absolute delight, liver had soft texture that combined perfectly with generous bacon portion, plenty of onions and mountain of creamy mash that accompanied peas from plate. Portions were very generous meal delicious no way as a solo widower could I have cooked this in my kitchen. An old-fashioned black board appeared, chalk letters large enough for Dariusdave to read easily. Again, a plethora of traditional delights to choose from. Couldn’t resist Sticky Toffee and Date with custard. Texture perfect, portion size generous, custard rich yellow, all with a subtle hint of ginger. Dariusdave has appreciated the virtues of ginger ever since visiting Sri Lanka. Across the “Covid corridor “from my table was a traditional noisy real coffee machine. Dariusdave has enjoyed fresh coffee visiting Costa Rica, Jamaica, Cuba and Kenya. This was delightful coffee hot, tasty with rich aroma, that concluded a very pleasant evening out. Will I visit again? Depending on other activities yes, I will with so many favourites to be tested. I have also enjoyed a Saturday evening meal Gammon from special board great. I felt Covid safe both visits, very good protection and well trained staff, they even smiled through their masks!

As 3-star hotels go, this is an excellent option. We stayed in a regular Classic Double Room. The room was modern (except for the phone), well maintained and warm. Everything is in its place. There are no tears on carpets or loose fittings. The space is not large, but the room had a table in case you wanted room service. Wardrobe space is limited (4 hangers), but this is 3 stars after all. The grounds are beautiful. They include a garden, which opens to the countryside. There is a lake nearby, which makes for a nice walk. Just beware that at the other end of the lake there is a parking lot, so lots of locals arrive to take the same walk as well. Many people have mentioned Japanese influence. The hotel has a Japanese owner to cater to the people visiting a nearby Honda plant. Hence there are plenty of Japanese offerings on the menu. We found the food exceptionally tasty. For dinner we had chicken piri-piri from the Western menu and chicken catsu curry from the Japanese menu. Both were lovely. Breakfast has two options: full English and Japanese. You can choose your ingredients for full English, Plus you get a toast, juice, pastries (croissants), fruit and coffee. All for £8.50. All in all, a very pleasant stay.
