      At 8:30 PM the night before an early morning flight to take my daughter to college I got a call from Matthew Filkins, the hotel operations supervisor, saying that our room was no longer available for the 1st night of our stay. He offered to reserve us a room at a nearby hotel with abysmal reviews that showed photographs of people with bed bug bites! I spent the entire evening until 2 AM trying to find another hotel during the busy school move-in week and pleading for help from Marriott's corporate office -- to no avail. Finally, in the morning on the way to the airport in a taxi stuffed with duffel bags I made one last call to the hotel. I asked to speak to the top manager and he said he had a room for us. What can I say. It was an appalling experience. We now stay at the Doubletree in Newark, OH. The customer service there is fabulous!

      We are semi-retired and have time to travel to play Pokemon Go (there are 2 or 3 stops and a gym available from the hotel, depending on room location). We've tried several cities/hotels with a 100 km radius from our home. Our favorite is the Double Tree in Newark, Oh. The entire staff have always been in the above and beyond mindset for customer satisfaction; however, Brittany really shines at customer service. She multitasks extremely well. I've watched when she had a less than cordial guest and Brittany was not only pleasant but was able to improve the guest's attitude! The rooms have always been clean and the cleaning staff are also pleasant! Wifi is available. A decent small refrigerator is in the room but no microwave. There is a microwave located in the lobby by the mini-store or you can request a microwave in your room. There is a Starbucks and a good restaurant in the hotel. They have a hot buffet breakfast but a guest may order from the menu instead. The only down side is that the restaurant closes after breakfast and does not open until 5pm, M-Sat, closed Sunday evening, but there are many restaurants within walking distance. I would definitely recommend!

      Nothing particularly terrible or wonderful but several frustrations that should be pretty easy to correct: 1. On arrival (weekday about 2:30) no one at front desk for many minutes. Finally, front desk person comes back and apologizes, saying that she was checking which rooms were cleaned because it didn't show up in her system yet (so she was literally going in and out of rooms to get the update). First, why wouldn't housekeeping be updating this information so it's readily available as they complete each room? Second, if there was a system issue, then someone else should do the manual checking; you don't leave the front desk without staff that long. 2. Door key would not work regularly - immediate problem at check in - had to swipe and try it over and over (more than 10 times, couple minutes) and it finally turned green and let me in. Same thing with both cards. Was told maintenance ticket was written up twice - but maintenance did not show up to look at it for 2 days. And, even then, there were still issues. Finally - day 2 night - front desk gave me entirely new cards (slightly different look - said they were different cards) that worked correctly. Struggled with getting in and out for 2 days - that's not good. Based on what I heard from others - apparently this was not just happening to me. 3. Two times, when coming down the stairs, a saw the front desk person sitting on the FLOOR, legs stretched out, to the right of the back of the front desk. Is there no CHAIR for him to sit it? I can understand not needing to stand there for hours when it's not busy - but the FLOOR? I definitely have never seen this before. 4. Maybe this one is my fault and I missed a sign. There's a U-shaped 1-lane drive that circles the back and sides of the hotel. I was trying to leave one day around 5:00 when traffic was bad, and instead of trying a left-turn on a busy road, figured I'd follow that drive around the back of the hotel and see if there was another way out on the other side. I followed it around only to find a white service van blocking the way out on the other side. I didn't see anyone to ask, so I decided to put my (large) vehicle in reverse and attempt to go backwards on the U. I managed it, but it was pretty slow-going to make sure I didn't go up the curb or hit anything. Did I miss a sign? If this is not intended for guests - please put a sign there. If what I did was fine, then please do not allow anyone to block the exit. 5. On final morning, I called around 7:30 AM to ask if it was possible that I got a 1/2 hour later checkout. An event that I thought would run until early afternoon was instead going to finish by 11:30, so rather than rushing the morning, I figured I could just come back to the hotel by noon and pack up and check out by 12:30. The front desk said they could not tell me, that only housekeeping could answer and they would not be in until later that morning. That's a new one. I have NEVER had t

      The Granville Inn is is a grand house built in 1924, with all of the charm you might expect, with large oak rooms and detailed carvings, stones, a large staircase, etc. It sits at the edge of Granville, Ohio, which is itself a picturesque small town. We visited in winter, but there is a large stone patio for warmer weather. Our room had a bedroom area and a separate smaller living room with flat panel television. The bathroom was large and had a cool marble floor with a basketweave pattern. There is parking outside, but one night we did have to compete with a larger party and ended up parking on the street about 100 yards away (it was an easy walk, so no problem). Wifi is included in the price and worked just fine for us. We had a nice dinner here (reviewed separately). We are not ordinarily big breakfast people. They had K-cup coffee makers on our floor, so coffee was easily available. We ended up having breakfast in town, which involved a pleasant walk past the attractive town buildings. Denison University sits on the hill overlooking the town, so many visitors may be there because of the school. We were just there for a nice getaway weekend and enjoyed ourselves very much.
