2.24km from downtownBastion was my hotel of choice for an international hockey tournament a couple of miles away at the Silverdome. I was coming from a business trip to Rotterdam, and between my business and sports bags, had a lot of luggage. On the way to Rotterdam from Schiphol Airport, I stopped at the Bastion to see whether they would store my hockey bag for a few days before I checked in. They kindly agreed, meaning I didn’t have to drag that bag everywhere. On my actual stay, I was satisfied. The lobby is clean and bright, with fresh fruit available. The rooms are also clean, bright simple, and comfortable. Only two drawbacks. You better have a car or enjoy walking. The only place nearby is a McDonalds next door. The train station is a half mile away. Luckily Zoetermeer is threaded with bike and pedestrian paths, enabling me to walk to the arena and elsewhere. The other negative was my room corridor. They keep the lights off until sensors pick up a human presence. The effect is kind of spooky and dingy. But it was safe, comfortable, and the price was right.

3.25km from downtownConvenient transportation, good breakfast
8.32km from downtownThe location can't be beat. It's on the main canal through the city, situated on a dairy farm. You wouldn't know you were on a dairy farm though, it's quiet and you can't smell any animals unless you go in the barns, which you are allowed to do. We watched the cows being milked, played with baby sheep, there is a ground level trampoline for the kids to play on and it's just quiet. The owner is great, such a nice guy and willing to give suggestions on places to see, eat, etc. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars because the wifi was terrible while we were there, which isn't a problem until wanting to watch a movie or something before bed.

8.81km from downtownI made the mistake of taking this hotel because of the price but really it's a terrible choice for someone who does not have a car (the hotel being located on the outer edge of Leiden) and so it is a 30-minute walk to get into the town area. It is ludicrous that a Northern European hotel in 2019 should have such terrible wifi coverage. In order to get some work done, I was forced to use the 4G roaming on my mobile due to the weak or non-existent Wifi in the hotel and that surely raises the cost of my stay to the same level as a better hotel in the city center. I also noticed that the hotel staff would come and enter the room in mid-day, not the cleaning staff but the front desk people would knock on the door and when I did not respond, they still came in to the room... and then ask "How is your room?"... but what is the point of coming in to ask that if I don't respond to the initial knock? Do they come and check everybody's room multiple times a day? Very weird and suspicious. Given the bad location, you would think that there would be bicycles available for guest use or rent, but none was offered when I asked about transport alternatives to get to town. There are lots of good bike lanes from the hotel to town but that is useless to hotel guests if they aren't offered a bike. The staff were friendly and told me that I was getting a "quiet" room but that first night was interrupted by some loud Eastern European drunkards in the nearby rooms at 2am. My room did not include breakfast, but when it was offered to me on check-in I would have considered it but the price (EUR 14!) was also crazy!!
9.58km from downtownAlthough the hardware conditions in all aspects are very general, in that area, the price is good. You can choose to have a large parking lot next to the parking.
10.45km from downtownJust finished a four-night stay while attending a scientific conference. I really cannot say enough good things about this place. Everything from start to finish was exceptional. The location is a combination of historic canal houses that the owners have creatively preserved while providing beautiful modernisation. I felt like a “local” each time I stepped out onto the street and walked along the quiet and beautiful canal to the many nearby shops and restaurants. Everyone there was incredibly welcoming. Note that with historic preservation if your room / suite is on an upper level you will be climbing levels of beautifully restored but traditional circular wooden stairs - not riding up on a glass-enclosed elevator with piped in music playing. This is part of the ambiance that gives the place it’s historic character but something to keep in mind when reserving. In my case, being in the “senior citizen” category but 1K and moving past 2,000,000 lifetime miles with United I wouldn’t hesitate to book the 2nd floor suite I had again and this would be the first place I book to stay on a return Leiden visit. Just a wonderful place to stay in a beautiful city. That’s it.
