Flight from Shanghai to Tianjin

Found in the North-Eastern coastline of China, overlooking the Yellow Sea, below the country capital Beijing, is Tianjin, a town which blends history with a subtle touch of modernism. On one side, European-houses and churches remind them of yesterday while a 415-metre Radio Tower and Giant Ferris wheel dominate the skyline on the other end. The city has worked its way among the top 20 financial centres in the Republic of China with development only witnessing an upward arrow. Tourism has crept its way into the city due to its unique stature hosting nearly half of a million inbound visitors in 24 months.

Tip: Owing to its semi-humid climate, travel between March and May to witness the city at its liveliest. The spring season brings joy and is accompanied by a pleasant environment.

Tianjin - Ford of Heaven

Unlike other cities, Tianjin stands out for its distinctive character, all thanks to its 19th-century estates and traditional relics it beholds. Leaving much of its history untouched, it also relishes a strong economic centre and boasts of being an upcoming tourist destination.

On your first evening, catch a cab or a shuttle to Tianjin Eye. This 120 metre Ferris Wheel is a centre of attraction for citizens and first-comers. At dusk, the wheel is lit in red, competing with the blue and pink sky. It is the only structure of its kind to be constructed atop a bridge. Overlooking the river, it produces magnificent views from above, especially on a clear day.

Porcelain House is every art lover's dream. Previously a colonised building, it was later redecorated and converted into a museum of contemporary art. From pottery to ancient antiques, one cannot leave this attraction without a little appreciation. Wait! There is more. Tianjin Museum comes with a modern twist and a whopping area of 50,000 square metres. Its never-ending range of cultural and ancient artefacts will keep you interested for a long time.

When visiting with family, there is no better spot than Tianjin Water Park. Hire a paddleboat and pack yourself a peanut butter sandwich and Chinese dumplings. This eco-friendly site is a perfect location to relax and unwind.

Stroll through Tianjin’s version of Italy. The end of colonialism didn’t mean the end Italian of culture. Head over towards the Marco Polo Square near Minzu road to grab a hot plate of red sauce spaghetti. Several notable restaurants and bakeries are a local favourite for serving authentic Italian cuisine. If your tummy still decides to rumble, Nanshi Food Street has it covered. This indoor mall is home to a variety of international and traditional Chinese delicacies.

Tip: Spend at least four days here to explore deeper into Tianjin’s history and culture.
