A Prism in the Wood is an award winning architecturally designed home nestled in the woods of Mt. Desert, through which passes the constantly changing light of the Maine seasons. The house is a frame of steel tubes completely enclosed in glass with the living spaces within floating like platforms through the grid. A light steel stair reaches up through the steel tubes to the second floor and a further spiral stair connects to the owner’s private quarters on the uppermost level. The levels are also connected by a free-standing glass elevator, the use of which is reserved to people above 21 year-old without children.The ceilings are of unfinished fir planks and the floors of maple. All materials and finishes are hypoallergenic or chemically neutral.The structure is anchored at one end by the concrete mass of the fireplace that serves on the outside as a giant scupper carrying off the rainwater from the long sloping roof. Standing on light steel extensions of the interior frame the house floats above the forest floor, visually and physically connected at the entrance by massive slabs of granite. Furniture is of contemporary design, mostly manufactured in Italy and Denmark. Contemporary artworks are hanged on the wall, suspended from the interior frame and free-standing on the floor.This stunning property has been published several times in architecture magazines, books and on the NYT. It as all you will need for your island visit, the perfect place to relax at the end of and active day in the park. Centrally located in Mount Desert, it lies at about 500 meters from the top tip of Some Sound.FIRST FLOOR: Enter into a light and modern great room. Full bath with tub and shower.THIRD FLOOR: Master bedroom with Queen bed, and full bath including shower and small soaking tub.BASEMENT with laundry machine and dryer.EXTRAS: Elevator available for for occupants over 21 years of age. Though a very useful convenience this elevator poses a potential hazard and must be operated with the utmost of caution and at its own risk. Outdoor propane grill. Large garage. NO AIR CONDITIONING.WARNINGSAmong the complains received are:1. “The top floor mattress is way too firm”. It is true that it is thin and very firm. But that is the bed where the home owner sleeps, and how he likes it ….2. No blinds on the bedroom windows. The house configuration, with two full walls of glass, doesn’t allow for it3. Situated on a quiet neighborhood street in Seal Harbor, this home enjoys proximity to both Seal Harbor's sandy beach and the Stanley Brook entrance to Acadia National Park. Walk or hop on your bike, and be on the Park Loop Rd or carriage trails within minutes! Beautiful view of Day Mountain from front deck. Small villiage of Seal Harbor is a 5 minute walk. Home recently remodeled while maintaining it's original character. Electric Heat Pump and Propane Stove insert for cooler nights, hardwood floors throughout, large flat screen internet TV with high-speed internet, fully stocked kitchen, B-Que grill and wood burning fire pit (wood provided) in back yard, Adirondack chairs for lounging on Deck, two bikes provided for touring Acadia carriage trails. FIRST FLOOR: Walk into the Living Room with propane fired wood stove for off-season use, large Smart TV and seating for up to five people. Just beyond is a small dining area with table that seats up to six. Kitchen overlooking the small deck and nicely landscaped, fenced-in back yard. SECOND FLOOR: Tucked under the eaves, a Primary Bedroom with Queen and a smaller Bedroom with Full size Trundle bed for guests (bottom twin bed rolls out from under its mate). Bedrooms share a Full Bath with combined tub and shower. Please note that neither bedroom has a bedroom door, but are visually separated. A privacy screen is provided to separate the two spaces. GUEST HOUSE: Seasonal studio (Spring through Fall) available with Queen size bed, heater, closet and storage space for luggage. Perfect space for second couple or older children. The Captain's Retreat farmhouse is located smack in the middle of Mount Desert Island in historic picturesque Somesville which is conveniently located to all of ACADIA National Park highlights! You can be hiking on a park trail, swimming in Echo lake, kayaking on Long Pond or enjoying a live performance at the Acadia Repertory Theatre all within a few minutes drive away! We are 15 minutes to Bar Harbor for whale watching, shopping and nightlife & 7 min to Southwest Harbor to experience a quaint traditional Maine town with local shops, lobster pounds, art galleries and dining. Beech Hill organic Farm is right down the road for ALL the best LOCAL produce, grass fed meats, fresh eggs, maple syrup and more! The farmhouse was purchased in 2017 and it has been renovated/updated to reflect it's original 1920's pristine glory. The farmhouse is on 3 acres with lots of wild blueberries you can pick in season and fun to explore! BRAND NEW 6 ft. cedar fence has been installed across the front of the property and a generator that powers the whole farmhouse for any island outages. There are 3 bedrooms upstairs and 1 full bathroom. On the main level is the the huge sunny farmers kitchen, dining room, living room and 1 full bathroom. I built an apartment next to our house, thinking someday i would live in the apartment and rent the house. The apartment is accessed by a wide set of stairs made of oak. Upon entering the apartment there is a teratine tile floor in the kitchen, that transitions onto an oak floor in an open layout. In the middle of the space is a small table that seats four, including an oak church pew . A small siting area (with fold out futon) in the family room area has several windows that look into the trees. Three sky light tunnels bring light into the room. The oak, tile, and warm paint make the living/dining/family area relaxing, and the perfect spot for 2-3 people. The front half of the unit has a bedroom on one end, an office/study/den/sleeping area in the middle and a tiled bathroom with custom built walk-in shower, along with washer and dryer on the other end. The office/study/den has a full sky light that brings light into the center of the unit.
