A Prism in the Wood is an award winning architecturally designed home nestled in the woods of Mt. Desert, through which passes the constantly changing light of the Maine seasons. The house is a frame of steel tubes completely enclosed in glass with the living spaces within floating like platforms through the grid. A light steel stair reaches up through the steel tubes to the second floor and a further spiral stair connects to the owner’s private quarters on the uppermost level. The levels are also connected by a free-standing glass elevator, the use of which is reserved to people above 21 year-old without children.The ceilings are of unfinished fir planks and the floors of maple. All materials and finishes are hypoallergenic or chemically neutral.The structure is anchored at one end by the concrete mass of the fireplace that serves on the outside as a giant scupper carrying off the rainwater from the long sloping roof. Standing on light steel extensions of the interior frame the house floats above the forest floor, visually and physically connected at the entrance by massive slabs of granite. Furniture is of contemporary design, mostly manufactured in Italy and Denmark. Contemporary artworks are hanged on the wall, suspended from the interior frame and free-standing on the floor.This stunning property has been published several times in architecture magazines, books and on the NYT. It as all you will need for your island visit, the perfect place to relax at the end of and active day in the park. Centrally located in Mount Desert, it lies at about 500 meters from the top tip of Some Sound.FIRST FLOOR: Enter into a light and modern great room. Comfortable seating by the gas fireplace with a nearby screened in porch. Dining area with a large round table and seating for six. Kitchen with gas stove and spacious pantry. Home office space with access to a large garage with two large floor-to-ceiling windows. Half bath.SECOND FLOOR: Open, loft style bedroom with Queen bed. Full bath with tub and shower.THIRD FLOOR: Master bedroom with Queen bed, and full bath including shower and small soaking tub.BASEMENT with laundry machine and dryer.EXTRAS: Elevator available for for occupants over 21 years of age. Though a very useful convenience this elevator poses a potential hazard and must be operated with the utmost of caution and at its own risk. Outdoor propane grill. Large garage. NO AIR CONDITIONING.WARNINGSAmong the complains received are:1. “The top floor mattress is way too firm”. It is true that it is thin and very firm. But that is the bed where the home owner sleeps, and how he likes it ….2. No blinds on the bedroom windows. The house configuration, with two full walls of glass, doesn’t allow for it3. Situated on a quiet neighborhood street in Seal Harbor, this home enjoys proximity to both Seal Harbor's sandy beach and the Stanley Brook entrance to Acadia National Park. Walk or hop on your bike, and be on the Park Loop Rd or carriage trails within minutes! Beautiful view of Day Mountain from front deck. Small villiage of Seal Harbor is a 5 minute walk. Home recently remodeled while maintaining it's original character. Electric Heat Pump and Propane Stove insert for cooler nights, hardwood floors throughout, large flat screen internet TV with high-speed internet, fully stocked kitchen, B-Que grill and wood burning fire pit (wood provided) in back yard, Adirondack chairs for lounging on Deck, two bikes provided for touring Acadia carriage trails. FIRST FLOOR: Walk into the Living Room with propane fired wood stove for off-season use, large Smart TV and seating for up to five people. Just beyond is a small dining area with table that seats up to six. Kitchen overlooking the small deck and nicely landscaped, fenced-in back yard. SECOND FLOOR: Tucked under the eaves, a Primary Bedroom with Queen and a smaller Bedroom with Full size Trundle bed for guests (bottom twin bed rolls out from under its mate). Bedrooms share a Full Bath with combined tub and shower. Please note that neither bedroom has a bedroom door, but are visually separated. A privacy screen is provided to separate the two spaces. GUEST HOUSE: Seasonal studio (Spring through Fall) available with Queen size bed, heater, closet and storage space for luggage. Perfect space for second couple or older children. OUTDOOR SPACES: Attractive wrap-around deck with furnishings. Wood burning fire pit (wood provided), propane grill in the back yard. For those traveling with their dog, there is an excellent fenced dog space next to the Guest House, complete with small dog house! There are multiple hiking trails closeby.You can't get any closer to the water than this with wildlife right in your backyard! The waterfront is tidal which is awesome. On high tide the ocean water is about 5 feet from the house. High tide is about 8-12 feet high. Low tide is perfect for beach exploration.This is a 3 level house with 3 bedrooms and 4 full bathrooms. Each bedroom has its own en-suite bath. The fourth full bathroom is located on the main level. There are two master bedrooms located respectively on the upper and lower levels of the house. Each with cozy king size beds. The second bedroom in the upper level has two queen beds. This waterfront vacation home offers unforgettable views of Somes Harbor with its backdrop mountains of Acadia National Park. There's regular wildlife in your backyard! The backyard also features a private wharf with gangway to the floating dock. Located right in the middle of the Historic Village of Somesville. The house is located between the Somesville Library and the Gallery at Somes Sound. Across the street to the left side is the historic Somesville Museum & Gardens with the famous picturesque Somesville wooden walk bridge. Very conveniently located for exploring Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Mill Pond is on the right side of the house. During Spring, Alewives (fish) would swarm under the private wharf waiting for the tide to be high enough for them to swim to the fish ladder towards Mill Pond then to Somes Pond. The beautiful Echo Lake with its sandy beach and Long Pond which is perfect for kayaking & stand up paddle boarding are just 5-7 minutes from the house .The Upper Level of this vacation home features two bedrooms. The master bedroom has an expansive picture window of Somes Harbor. The Master Bedroom features king size bed, ensuite bath (walk in shower, vanity, toilet), smart tv, and comfortable power Leather Italia loveseat. The second bedroom has two soft and cozy queen beds and an en-suite bath (walk in shower, vanity, toilet). The Lower Level Master bedroom has an open concept design. This bedroom is accessed via the main level with full flight of stairs with rail on the left upon coming down. It has sliding glass door that exits to the waterfront where the private wharf and dock are located. This room features, a beautiful picture window with seating for three. There is an entertainment area with power reclining Leather Italia loveseat to view the smart TV. The full bath features a free standing bath tub, vanity sink, & toilet. This lower level also houses the laundry room with one washer and two dryers. The main floor (level with the parking area) features the living room with comfortable oversized 2 leather loveseats and 1 sofa. Sit back and enjoy our huge 75 inch smart TV. Dine and enjoy the Harbor view through the wide picture window . Breakfast nook has seating for 3 and the dining table with seating for 5. The kitchen has full size appliances: fridge, stove top oven, dishwasher, counter top microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and blender. The house is four seasons. During the cooler months of the year the house has two sources of heat: Heat Pumps and Electric baseboard heat. The backyard features a private wharf with gangway to the float for easy access to the water. The waterfront is tidal. There's complimentary Kayaks. There is life vests for guest to use.They are complimentary. The wharf has outdoor dining table with seating for 8 with the propane fired grill right next to it.The property can park two vehicles parallel to each other. No room for a third vehicle. We have an EV charger that can be used with a fee.This house was designed with guest comfort in mind. There are many spaces to spread around.The outdoor patio furniture, grill, private wharf, gangway, and dock will not be available from mid October to April. The propane grill however can be available on demand during the cold months. I built an apartment next to our house, thinking someday i would live in the apartment and rent the house. The apartment is accessed by a wide set of stairs made of oak. Upon entering the apartment there is a teratine tile floor in the kitchen, that transitions onto an oak floor in an open layout. In the middle of the space is a small table that seats four, including an oak church pew . A small siting area (with fold out futon) in the family room area has several windows that look into the trees. Three sky light tunnels bring light into the room. The oak, tile, and warm paint make the living/dining/family area relaxing, and the perfect spot for 2-3 people. The front half of the unit has a bedroom on one end, an office/study/den/sleeping area in the middle and a tiled bathroom with custom built walk-in shower, along with washer and dryer on the other end. The office/study/den has a full sky light that brings light into the center of the unit. Ideally situated in the center of Mount Desert Island, Echo Pines Cottage is the perfect "home away from home" for vacation activities. It's only minutes from popular "quiet side" trails, including stunning Acadia and Beech Mountains. The entrance to Acadia's pristine, swimmable Echo Lake is only 3 miles away. You'll enjoy a view of the northern section of Echo Lake from the cottage's front windows.The house sits on 1.5 wooded acres, on a private road. The home is surrounded by tall pines and birch trees. Watch for deer that regularly pass through the yard, and listen for the call of the loons from the lake.Enjoy eating around the wood- topped kitchen island, or sit by the bay windows looking toward the water. The cottage is private, but close to all the activities the island has to offer. "Downtown" Bar Harbor is about 15 minutes away, and quaint Southwest Harbor is less than 10. The house has been outfitted for your comfort, including premium mattresses and many kitchen conveniences and amenities. You'll love the whimsical, "Maine" character of the place. And we take pride in having a spotless cottage! There are two bedrooms, both with queen-size beds, plus a queen-size pull-out couch with memory foam mattress in the living area and a full size futon couch / bed in the back reading room. The reading room can be closed off for privacy. There are two full bathrooms, both with showers and tubs, one upstairs and one down. The kitchen is fully appointed, ready for family meals and gatherings! You'll find many basic kitchen staples, like standard spices, cooking oil, and storage wraps provided for you. We also stock condiments in the fridge. In the basement there's a washer and dryer for your use. Laundry detergent is provided. There's also a ping pong table, ready for those family tournaments. We, the owners, are local, living on the west side of Bar Harbor, so we're intimately familiar with the area and are ready if you have any issues or questions. We make every effort to go above and beyond for visitors to MDI. We love the island and truly enjoy sharing it with those who come to experience this fabulous national park. Our goal is that you leave loving Acadia National Park and MDI as much as we do.
