Shymbulak
Taking the cable car at Shymbulak is the ultimate must-do highlight when visiting Almaty. Not only is it the largest ski resort in Central Asia, but the scenic views along the ride are absolutely breathtaking. 🚠 The Cable Car Experience (Cable Car Experience) The cable car route from Medeu to Shymbulak spans over 4.5 kilometers. The journey is divided into several sections, with each stage gradually revealing increasingly spectacular landscapes: Altitude: The cable car takes you from Medeu Station (around 1,600 meters) all the way up to the highest peak at Talgar Pass (3,200 meters) above sea level. Million-Dollar Views: You'll witness the dramatic transformation of nature—from lush green valleys (in the summer) to pure white snow (in the winter) set against a bright blue sky. The panoramic view of the Tien Shan Mountains is truly world-class, rivaling any ski resort in Europe. The Summit Viewpoint: Once you reach the top station at Talgar Pass, you'll find an incredible viewpoint overlooking glaciers and towering peaks. It's a fantastic spot for photography, and the weather stays refreshingly cool all year round.

It is the perfect starting point for any journey into the vast, untamed beauty of Kazakhstan. 🏔️🌲 . 📅 What to experience · Zenkov Cathedral: Located in Panfilov Park, this stunning, colorful wooden church is one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world. Shymbulak
#overratedspots Shymbulak is one of the most popular attractions near Almaty, and it’s easy to understand why. The mountain scenery is beautiful, the cable car ride is enjoyable, and the views over the surrounding peaks are impressive throughout the year. That said, after visiting, I felt that the journey and the mountain atmosphere were the main highlights. Because of its popularity, the resort can get quite busy, especially on weekends and during holidays. I enjoyed spending time in the mountains and taking in the views, but I found some of the less-visited locations around Almaty to be just as memorable. Places farther from the city often offer a quieter experience and a stronger feeling of being surrounded by nature. Overall, I’m glad I visited Shymbulak. It’s an iconic place and a convenient way to experience the mountains without traveling far from Almaty. My recommendation would be to visit on a weekday if possible and enjoy it as part of a broader exploration of the region’s incredible landscapes.
Kolsay
The Kolsay Lakes are among Kazakhstan’s most stunning destinations, where rugged mountain peaks, lush coniferous forests, and crystal-clear waters create alpine-like landscapes. While most travelers only visit the First Kolsay Lake, even a single day here is enough to see why it's known as the Pearl of the Northern Tien Shan. For the best experience, arrive early in the morning before the tour groups show up, or spend the night in the nearby village of Saty. During these quiet hours, a peaceful silence settles over the shoreline, and the lake looks exceptionally picturesque with the mountains and forests perfectly reflected in its calm waters. When exploring, be sure to hike around both sides of the lake. Each shore offers unique perspectives of the surrounding mountains, allowing you to take in the beauty of Kolsay at your own pace. If you're an outdoor enthusiast, you can hike the trail to the Second Kolsay Lake. This route winds through a dense coniferous forest and is widely considered one of the most scenic trekking trails in Kazakhstan. Tips for Visiting · Arrive early in the morning or stay overnight to enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere. · Make sure to stroll along both shores of the lake. · If you have the time and fitness level, hike up to the Second Kolsay Lake. · Pack water and snacks so you don't have to waste time searching for cafes and restaurants. · Bring warm clothing, even in summer—mountain weather can change in a flash. · Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for hitting the trails.
