Traveler's Coffee
One of the greatest joys of traveling is the chance to discover a city through its flavors. Almaty turned out to be a true hidden gem in this regard, and our friend Denis showed us some of the absolute best spots! After Saint Petersburg, the local prices were a pleasant surprise. Our mornings here always began with the hunt for a good breakfast. And the choices are simply endless! You can head to the cozy "Nedelka" for classic options, the stylish "Vanilla" where every dish looks picture-perfect, or "Fika" for some Scandinavian simplicity. We also found ourselves returning to the "Traveler's Coffee" chain—reliable and delicious. For those looking to try something special with a local touch, "Akku" is a perfect choice. By the way, you can even order horse meat dishes there if you're feeling adventurous. I also highly recommend the "Coffee Original" cafe. When it comes to lunch or dinner, there are even more options. Meat lovers will absolutely adore "Gaucho," which serves up fantastic steaks. If you're craving Asian cuisine, "Tanuki" welcomes you with a cozy atmosphere and fresh sushi. For a complete immersion into the local culture, we discovered Chechen cuisine at "Jijig & Galnash & Almaty"—it’s incredibly hearty, aromatic, and homey. And what's a trip without an oriental fairytale? "Navat" teahouse is the perfect spot to kick back on soft poufs, sip green tea, and try the signature horse meat and traditional Kazakh dishes. Coffee shops deserve a special shoutout. What’s a trip without good coffee? The coffee at all the breakfast spots mentioned above was outstanding. But we were also really charmed by "Choco market," which pairs excellent coffee with irresistible desserts. And at the coffee counter inside the "Sebet Gourmet" shop, we found what might just be the best croissants in the city. Best of all, our average bill per person ranged from 4,500 to 7,000 tenge, depending on our appetite and the venue. For that price, we didn't just get a meal; we got an incredibly enjoyable experience and top-notch quality. Almaty definitely knows how to delight foodies on any budget!
Big Almaty Lake
🗺️ A Step-by-Step Guide to the Big Almaty Lake (BAO) Route 1. 🚌 Bus No. 28 Hop on at the bus stop near the First President's Park (Navoi St.) and ride it all the way to the final stop. 2. 🚕 Final Stop → Edelweiss Taking a cab (Yandex / InDriver) to the boom barrier will run you about 1,500-2,000 tenge. Alternatively, you can just hike up along the road. 3. 🌲 Eco-Post / Ayusai Visitor Center Pay the national park entrance fee here. Keep walking straight along the road, passing the visitor center until you hit the bridge—this is the fork between the Big Almaty Gorge and the Alma-Arasan Gorge. 🔀 At the fork, pick your route: 🛣️ The Paved Road — ~15 km / 8 hrs round trip. A longer but less strenuous walk. Suitable for any type of shoes. 🔧 Along the Pipe — ~12 km / 6 hrs round trip. Turn right just before the steep climb near the power plant. It’s a shorter trail, but much steeper and more challenging. ⛰️ BAO (~2,500m elevation) The lake sits in a border zone, so don't forget to pack your ID! Big Almaty Lake is one of the main drinking water sources for Almaty, which means swimming is strictly off-limits. 📋 What to pack: · 🍞 Plenty of food and 💧 water (you can't buy any on the mountain) · 🪪 ID / Passport · 🗑️ Trash bags — pack out what you pack in · Warm layers — it gets chilly at that altitude
Shymbulak
🏔️ Tips & Tricks for Visiting Shymbulak, Kazakhstan + Estimated Costs ✨ If you’re visiting Almaty, one place you absolutely shouldn’t skip is Shymbulak Mountain Resort. Located just about 30–40 minutes from the city center, Shymbulak is famous for its stunning mountain scenery, cable cars, skiing, cafés, and fresh air that honestly feels unreal 🥹❄️ Here are some tips & tricks before visiting: · Go in the morning ☀️ Mornings are usually less crowded and the weather tends to be clearer, giving you better mountain views and prettier photos. Around noon or in the afternoon, clouds can start rolling in and covering the peaks. · Dress in layers 🧥 Even outside of the winter season, temperatures at the top can feel significantly colder compared to downtown Almaty. Bring a jacket, scarf, or gloves if you get cold easily. · Wear comfortable shoes 👟 You’ll still be doing quite a bit of walking around the area, especially if you want to explore different viewpoints or check out the cafés near the cable car stations. · Bring sunglasses 🕶️ The sunlight bouncing off the mountains or snow can be surprisingly bright, especially during the winter. · Prepare for cashless payments 💳 Most places accept cards, but it’s still smart to carry a little cash for small purchases or transportation. · Check the weather before you go 🌨️ Cable car operations can sometimes be paused due to strong winds or bad weather, so always check the conditions beforehand. How to get there from Almaty 🚖 The easiest way is by taxi or a ride-hailing app. You can also mix the metro and a bus for a more budget-friendly option. Usually, tourists head to Medeu first, then take the cable car up to Shymbulak. You can also catch a bus directly from the city center! Estimated costs 💸 (Prices may vary depending on the season) · Taxi from downtown Almaty to the Medeu/Shymbulak area: around 3,000–6,000 KZT one way · Cable car ticket: around 4,000–7,000 KZT round trip, depending on how high up you go · Coffee or snacks at a café: around 2,000–5,000 KZT · Ski or snowboard rentals (winter): starting around 10,000–20,000 KZT · Full ski package + lift pass: can reach 25,000–40,000 KZT depending on the duration and season Photo tips 📸 If you want those iconic mountain backdrop shots, try snapping your pictures near the upper cable car stations. Neutral or earthy-toned outfits also pop beautifully against the snowy or lush green mountain scenery ✨ Honestly, Shymbulak is one of those places that just makes you forget everything else for a while. The crisp mountain air, peaceful views, and the cable car ride make the whole experience feel totally magical 🤍 Save this for your future Kazakhstan trip! ✈️
