We only had one day in Astana, and here's our itinerary through the city of the future 🏙️ Our top tip for getting around is either the LRT metro—a high-speed train connecting the airport with major attractions that feels like a mini-tour itself—or the familiar Yandex Taxi (you can pay with a Russian card, and the rates are great). 🌅 We kicked off our morning at the city's iconic symbol and legend—the Bayterek Tower. The tower represents the legend of the "Tree of Life," where the sacred bird Samruk laid a golden egg at its peak, symbolizing a new sun and the light of new life. You can head up to the observation deck (97 meters high). The price is 2,500 tenge (~440₽). It offers a stunning view of the city's futuristic left bank. Right next to the tower is a lovely park dotted with sculptures and fountains, stretching all the way to the famous Khan Shatyr—a massive shopping and entertainment complex. It holds the record as the world's largest tent, standing 150 meters tall (roughly a 50-story building) and covered with a special translucent plastic membrane built to withstand harsh winters and scorching summers. Next, we headed in the opposite direction from the Bayterek Tower, -> towards the House of Ministries (housing all government departments and authorities in one place) and Akorda, the residence of the President of Kazakhstan (it's a high-security facility, so tourists can't take guided tours inside; we just admired the local "White House" from a distance). The building features a white-and-blue color scheme with a golden dome. Blue stands for peace, while white represents purity. The spire on the dome is crowned with a Golden Sphere (the sun): a symbol of life, warmth, abundance, and infinity. And the Berkut (steppe eagle): a symbol of national independence, freedom, strength, and Kazakhstan's aspirations for high goals. ( 🇰🇿 - just like on the country's flag ). Inside, there are 4 floors, but the high ceilings (up to 10 meters) create an incredible sense of scale. It's the venue for major international summits. In the evening, they turn on some gorgeous architectural lighting. 🏛️ After a packed walk, morning seamlessly turned into afternoon. From Akorda, it's a short 5-minute walk to a massive 62-meter glass pyramid—the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation (designed by the same architect as Khan Shatyr). The building stands for the unity of religions and cultures. It hosts opera performances (with a 1,300-seat auditorium), exhibitions in its spacious, bright atrium, and at the very top (the "cradle"), there's a panoramic hall featuring a stained-glass window with 130 doves. 🕊️ Just across the street is the National Museum (the largest in Central Asia). It houses a collection of 223,000 historical exhibits spread across 20 halls. In the evening, you can soak in the city lights illuminating the capital's three main mosques 🕌 The "Nursultan Meshiti" Mosque. This is the largest mosque in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, opened in August 2022. Its total capacity reaches a massive 235,000 people. The main dome is 83.2 meters high, the minarets tower at 130 meters, and its wooden door, measuring 12.4 meters and weighing around 1.5 tons, is hand-carved from rare iroko wood and adorned with traditional ornaments. The "Hazret Sultan" Mosque—a magnificent cathedral mosque built in a classic Islamic style with traditional Kazakh motifs (featuring a marble facade, nine domes, and four 77-meter minarets). It accommodates up to 10,000 people and is open to all visitors. The "Nur Astana" Abu Nasir Al-Farabi Mosque—opened in 2005, it holds up to 5,000 people. Its main dome is 40 meters high to honor the age at which the Prophet Muhammad received his revelation, and the minarets are 63 meters high, symbolizing the age at which the Prophet Muhammad passed away. The dome and minarets gleam in gold and white. Inside, the walls are decorated with verses from the Quran, with a massive chandelier hanging in the center of the main hall. All the mosques are surrounded by beautifully maintained courtyards, making them a perfect spot to relax in the evening.

If you only have one day in Astana, it's best to focus on the capital's main symbols: modern architecture, panoramic views, and a few key museums. Walking around Astana: from Baiterek to the Embankment If you want to experience the city from the inside, forget about taxis for the evening. The best way to appreciate the contrasts of Kazakhstan's capital is to walk from the futuristic Left Bank to the soulful Right Bank embankment. This route will take you about 1–1.5 hours at a leisurely pace. Get your perfect guide! 📍 Starting Point: Baiterek Monument Begin your journey at the country's main symbol, the 97-meter-tall "tree of life." Trip.com tip: Take the time to climb to the observation deck inside the glass globe. It offers panoramic views of the entire government quarter—the perfect spot for your first photos. 🏛️ Step 1: Water-Green Boulevard (Nurzhol) From Baiterek, head northwest along the pedestrian Nurzhol Boulevard. The architecture here is stunning: mirrored skyscrapers, singing fountains, and modern art installations. In the summer, it's always bustling with life, the smell of coffee fills the air, and street musicians create an incredible atmosphere. 🎪 Step 2: Along Kabanbay Batyr Street to Khan Shatyr Turn toward the world's largest "tent" – the Khan Shatyr Shopping Center, designed by the renowned Norman Foster. Even if you're not planning on shopping, the building's architecture, both inside and out, is worth exploring up close. In front of it lies the cozy Lovers' Park – a great place to take a break on a bench. 🌳 Step 3: Through the Central Park From Khan Shatyr, head towards Turan Avenue and enter the Central City Park. It's a true green oasis in the middle of the steppe metropolis. It's cool, with plenty of shady alleys, attractions, and relaxation areas. Once you've passed through the park, you'll come straight to the river. 🌊 Finish: Yesil (Ishim) River Embankment You've reached your destination! Astana's embankment is where the Left Bank meets the Right Bank, and futurism gives way to cozy classicism.
