Actually, there's a secret trick to riding the Shinkansen at a discount by using JR West's online reservation service, 【e5489】! We've compiled essential points for anyone who wants to smartly save on transportation costs for business trips, outings, or travel! 💡 Reasons to recommend "e5489" Easy reservations anytime from your smartphone Quickly complete reservations while on the go or from home, checking seat availability Take advantage of section-specific and online-only tickets (such as Tokutoku tickets)! Smooth ticket pickup at station vending machines After booking, simply hold the QR code or pickup code over the designated seat ticket vending machine at the station to get your ticket without waiting in line! The Atomic Bomb Dome is one of Hiroshima's most iconic symbols and arguably one of the most poignant landmarks I’ve wanted to visit since my very first trips to Japan. This building was located right next to the epicenter of the atomic explosion on August 6, 1945, and became one of the few structures to partially survive the tragedy. Today, it has been preserved as it was, as much as possible, to keep the memory of that day alive. In 1996, the Atomic Bomb Dome was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list (and I’ve since started a personal quest to visit these sites in every country I travel to). But here is the most striking part—standing next to the dome, you feel a surreal contrast. All around you is a peaceful park, a river, and a modern city where people stroll and take photos—yet right in front of you stands a building frozen in time, a silent witness to immense grief and pain. I’ve wanted to visit since my very first trip to Japan, partly because my career involves working with X-rays and radiation sickness, and partly because this site is a pivotal chapter in world history. The museum is located in the heart of Peace Memorial Park, just a short walk from the iconic Atomic Bomb Dome. Opened in 1955, it chronicles the tragedy of August 6, 1945—the day Hiroshima became the first city in history to suffer an atomic bombing. What hits the hardest aren't the staggering historical statistics, but the personal artifacts: fragments of clothing, school supplies, watches, and photographs left behind. The main exhibits illustrate the immediate aftermath for the city and its residents, as well as the long-term suffering that followed for years to come. Another section details Hiroshima’s history before and after the blast, the evolution of nuclear weapons, and the city’s commitment to remembrance. You can also listen to the firsthand accounts of hibakusha—the survivors of the bombing. Ultimately, that is the museum’s core mission: it’s not just about recounting the past, but forcing us to confront the true cost of war and why such a tragedy must never happen again.
