Hidden near Hue is one of Vietnam's strangest attractions - Ho Thuy Tien, an abandoned water park slowly being reclaimed by nature. The park opened in the 2000s but never really became a success. Today, its most famous landmark is the enormous dragon rising above the lake. Inside, you can walk through the abandoned structure and climb up toward the dragon's head, while empty pools, overgrown paths and decaying buildings are scattered around the site. It's completely different from Hue's imperial tombs and temples. There are no restored palaces or polished tourist attractions here - just concrete ruins, tropical vegetation and an atmosphere that feels almost post-apocalyptic. We recently decided to revisit the historic city of Hue, which served as the capital of Vietnam for nearly 150 years! You can fly here, but we opted for a motorbike ride from Da Nang. The trip took only 2.5 hours. 📍 We stayed at: TRƯỜNG PHÚ HOUSE. A lovely, clean hotel close to all the main attractions. At sunrise, we went to see the dragon. We arrived by 7 a.m. to be the first ones at the location: 📍 Hồ Thuỷ Tiên [Pro tip: You can also rent bikes here for just 20k VND per person!] The city's main attraction is the Imperial Palace. I highly recommend renting a traditional outfit to make the atmosphere even more special! We rented ours here: 📍 Ao dai Thanh Trang We paid 500k VND per day for a historical costume. Admission to the Imperial Palace was another 200k VND per person. We visited the palace early in the morning, but it was already very hot. It's probably best to visit on a cloudy day. You’ve probably heard about Hue’s Imperial City. But what about its tiger arena? Hổ Quyền is one of the strangest historical sites I found in Hue. During the Nguyen Dynasty, this circular arena was used for fights between elephants and tigers as spectacles for the imperial court. Today, the crowds are gone. What remains is a compact stone arena hidden in a quiet part of Hue, and visiting it feels completely different from exploring the city’s famous palaces and royal tombs. That’s why I love discoveries like this. It may not be the biggest or most spectacular monument in Hue, but it tells a story that most visitors never hear. If you’re staying in Da Nang or Hoi An, I definitely recommend dedicating one full day to Hue. It’s a completely different side of Vietnam — much more historical, atmospheric and connected to the country’s imperial past. I joined a guided group tour from Da Nang, which was probably the easiest option because Hue is quite far for a casual day trip and the tour included transportation and several stops. The highlight was, of course, the Imperial City of Hue — the former capital of Vietnam and home of the Nguyen Dynasty. The complex is huge, so don’t expect to see every corner in one visit. There are gates, courtyards, temples, pavilions and reconstructed buildings, while some areas still show traces of the destruction caused by wars. We also visited one of Hue’s imperial tombs and other historical sites around the city. Having a guide was genuinely useful here because without the historical context, many buildings can start looking similar. 💡 A few practical tips: 🏯 Allow a full day — Hue deserves more than a rushed stop. 👟 Wear comfortable shoes; there is a LOT of walking. ☀️ Bring water, sunscreen and something to cover your head. 📸 The Imperial City has countless beautiful photo spots. 🚐 From Da Nang, an organized tour is convenient if you don’t want to arrange transport yourself. The tour itinerary itself could have been organized better, but Hue absolutely deserves a visit. I’d actually love to return and spend a night or two here instead of seeing everything in a single day.
