This hike in Nepal had the most mind blowing views. The mountains are so massive and stand at an outrageous altitude. Makalu itself is about 8481 meters above sea level. I viewed it while walking in the Makalu Barun National Park but it sits both in Nepal and China. The hiking was fantastic with gorgeous mountain#nepal views and herds of yaks in the alpine fields. Most of the trail follows a river valley and glacier that lead to glacial lake below Makalu mountain. There is a small settlement that caters to hikers and mountain climbers it is aptly called Makalu Base Camp. Here it is possible to see how massive an 8481 meter mountain is, it stands behind me in the cover photograph! The picture is taken on a small hill above Makalu Base Camp at 5600 meters. Of course this hike requires a Hiking permit and National Park pass. I would also recommend a warm sleeping bag, comfortable hiking shoes or boots, a rain jacket, a down jacket, lots of extra socks, a warm hat because it does get cold high up in the mountains. Maybe hiring a porter to carry your backpack would be nice because walking with a 15 kilogram backpack is hard work. The good thing is there are lots of Tea houses along the way that provide food, drink and rooms to sleep in. They are like small mountain inns run by local Nepali people. Most of them are really great because of the friendly nature of the people and the professional approach to providing a service for the hikers! This hike is not as busy as the Everest Base Camp trek so if you're looking for a hidden secret this is it. I was in awe of those massive mountains and some on the way up walking alongside the grazing Yaks was surreal for sure! One of my favorite places to shop for Souvenirs in Kathmandu, Nepal. While resting from the long days of walking in the Himalayas, eating, and sight seeing, browsing the shops is super relaxing. Also around most of the interesting sight seeing areas in Kathmandu are lots of great shopping too. Of course it is necessary to go down the side streets of deep into the shopping bazzarrs to find the really funky shops. I suggest the shops in the Boudnath district in front of the enormous stupa, around the stupa and also the alleys behind. There are lots of good Tibetan restaurants in the area. Also look out for Yak cheese, momos and butter tea. The area below Swayambhnath has some nice religious shops and some good tourist type shops. There are a couple of hipster type coffee bars and a few nice places with a terrace for a cold beer. Thamel district is the trekker and tourist central and therefore has a high concentration of artisan shops, bookstores, jewelry merchants, hiking equipment suppliers, decorations, paper crafts, wool wares and metal statues. Even the small mom and pop shops, can some amazing finds on the back shelf. Thamel has restaurants with foods from all around the world but I recommend looking out for places that do the trekkers breakfast and start the day with that! This place I really like to visit in kathmandu is the city center proper. This is where most Nepali goods can be found. It is more for consumer goods like shoes, clothes, household, electronics, wholesale suppliers, fabris, saris, eyeglasses, sports equipment, motorbikes, furniture, daily household items ,( think metal pots, clay bowls, wooden dishes) and of course food and food products. There are some unbelievable bargains and some of the stuff is really good quality.
