Whether you’re craving authentic momo (Nepalese dumplings) or a stylish rooftop café, it’s easy to relax here and watch the rhythm of the city unfold. 📍 Durbar Square / Palace Square: The brick-red echoes of history This was once the residence of the Malla kings and remains the heart of Kathmandu. · Pigeons sweep across the brick-red temple grounds. Although some buildings are still supported by scaffolding after the earthquake, the grandeur of the stone carvings and the intricate wooden windows (including the famous image of Black Bhairav) still convey the majesty of the former royal court. 📍 Garden of Dreams: A hidden green oasis in the city If you want a break from the dust and noise of Thamel, this place feels like the only true escape. · Elegant atmosphere: This European-style neoclassical garden features fountains, pavilions, and neatly trimmed lawns. · Healing moments: The garden provides mats for the grass, and many travelers lie here in the sun or read a book. Although the admission fee is a bit pricey for foreigners, the peaceful feeling of being able to breathe quietly is absolutely worth it. 💡 Quick city tips: 1. Walking routes: · From Thamel to the Garden of Dreams, it’s only about a 5–10 minute walk (near the entrance to Thamel). · From Thamel to Durbar Square, it takes about 20–30 minutes on foot. Along the way, you’ll pass lively traditional markets such as Asan Tole. The roads are narrow and traffic is heavy, but it’s also one of the fastest ways to get a real feel for local life. 2. Protect your breathing: mask and sunglasses: • Air pollution and dust are especially severe in the city center and around Durbar Square, so a mask is essential. Sunglasses not only shield you from the sun, but also help keep dust and sand out of your eyes. 3. Ticket info: • Both Durbar Square and the Garden of Dreams require separate admission tickets. If you plan to enter and leave Durbar Square multiple times, remember to bring your passport and a photo to apply for a tourist pass, so you won’t have to buy a new ticket every time. 4. Getting around: Pathao or InDrive: • If you don’t want to spend too long walking through traffic, it’s highly recommended to download Pathao. Booking a motorbike or a small car straight to Durbar Square saves you the hassle of bargaining and is far more comfortable than breathing exhaust on the main roads. This route is Kathmandu’s most classic “contrast of the senses.” At Durbar Square, you feel the weight of history and faith. In the Garden of Dreams, you find leisure and tranquility. And in Thamel, you experience vibrant, living chaos. Together, these three places create the most authentic impression of Kathmandu.

During my visit to Kathmandu, I explored Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu sites globally. Situated along the Bagmati River, this temple complex serves as a significant pilgrimage destination for devotees. At the entrance, local guides often offer their services for a small donation, providing insights into the temple's history and the rituals performed there. Alternatively, visitors can choose to explore the complex independently. It's important to note that foreign visitors are not permitted inside the main temple; only Hindus are allowed into the inner sanctum. However, tourists can wander around the expansive temple grounds and observe the rituals from the surrounding areas. The entrance fee for foreign visitors is approximately 1000 Nepalese rupees (around $8–10), granting access to the temple grounds and the riverbank. One of the most remarkable sights here is the open-air cremation ceremonies conducted on the ghats along the Bagmati River. While these rituals may seem unusual or even unsettling to some travelers, they hold profound spiritual significance for Hindus. For those who have not visited India or witnessed Hindu cremation ceremonies before, Pashupatinath in Kathmandu offers a unique opportunity to experience this tradition.
