Liverpool is one of those cities where music, history and character seem to follow you everywhere. 🎸🇬🇧 Of course, you can’t come here without experiencing its Beatles history. One of my favourite stops was The Beatles Story museum, where you can follow the band’s journey from their early days in Liverpool to becoming one of the most famous bands in the world. Even if you’re only a casual fan, seeing the memorabilia, recreated spaces and stories behind their rise makes it worth visiting. But Liverpool has much more to explore beyond The Beatles. Walking around the city, you’ll find impressive architecture, lively streets, museums and the waterfront around the Royal Albert Dock — an area that’s especially nice to wander around without much of a plan. There’s a strong personality to Liverpool that makes it feel different from other English cities, and its musical heritage is only one part of it. Royal Albert Dock Liverpool: Go just before sunset, grab a drink and wander around the docks as everything starts glowing. 2. The Otterspool Promenade: Perfect if you want a quieter riverside sunset with plenty of open sky and water. 3. Waterfront Pier Head Promenade Liverpool: My pick for a classic Liverpool view. Watch the sky change behind the Mersey with the Three Graces in the frame. 4. Everton Brow: Head up here for a completely different perspective, with Liverpool’s skyline stretching out below you. 5. Public Transport: Liverpool's public transport network includes an extensive Merseyrail commuter train network, buses (Arriva, Stagecoach), and ferries, providing quick travel across the city and region. Trains serve 69 stations (including underground stations in the city center). Buses are a popular way to travel, with a fixed fare of around £2. Merseyrail: Two main lines (Northern and Wirral) connect the city center with the suburbs of Chester and Southport. There are four underground stations in the city center: Liverpool Central, James Street, Lime Street, and Moorfields. You can pay with a tap-on/tap-off card or buy tickets from ticket machines and ticket offices. Single-day and multi-day travel passes are available. Buses: Extensive network, operated by Arriva and Stagecoach. AirLink routes 500, 80A, 81A, 82A, 86A, and 89 serve John Lennon Airport. Ferries: Mersey Ferries operate across the River Mersey, offering both transport services and tourist cruises. What to do: The Waterfront, or "sea front," is the River Mersey embankment, historic docks, and port buildings. The main buildings you'll see on any Liverpool postcard are the so-called "Three Graces": the Royal Liverpool Building, the Cunard Building, and the Liverpool Port Authority Building. They were built in the early 20th century (1908-1916). Initially, they housed the office buildings of an insurance company and the Port Authority. Leave the waterfront and head for a stroll around the city. Admire the buildings on Castle Street, Victoria Street, and Dale Street—arguably the most beautiful streets in the city. The buildings are decorated with sculptures, flourishes, and mosaics depicting ships—memorials of the time when Liverpool was one of the richest and most prosperous cities in the country. The Cavern Quarter, a music district, is a thriving party spot, any time of day, any day of the week. Here you'll find one of two Beatles museums, the Cavern Club, where they performed, and a sculpture of Beatles heroine Eleanor Rigby dedicated to "all the lonely people." The Central Library was built in 1860 and was the first building in the city with electric lighting. Bombed Out Church was built in the early 19th century but did not survive the 1941 bombing. The church's shell survived, and it was decided not to restore it, but to leave it as a memorial to all those who died during the two world wars. Liverpool Chinatown is one of the oldest Chinatowns in Europe. The first Chinese ships arrived in the port in 1834 to trade silk. Liverpool Anglican Cathedral is a massive red-brick neo-Gothic building and the largest cathedral in the UK. The Walker Art Gallery is the city's premier art gallery and one of the most important British museums outside London. The Museum of Liverpool is another museum on the waterfront, a large, light-colored building with an unusual shape that lends itself particularly well to black-and-white photographs. The Victoria Gallery and Museum is a gallery at the University of Liverpool, housing historical artefacts, classical paintings, decorative arts, and changing exhibitions. Tate Liverpool is a branch of the renowned Tate Modern art gallery. Trips out of town: Formby National Trust - A coastal nature reserve with some of the finest sand dunes in Europe, home to many rare species, including midwife toads.
