Medellin Modern Art Museum
My impressions of Colombia before traveling came entirely from the TV series *Narcos*, so I specifically made a point of visiting Medellín, the second largest city, at the end of this trip to pay homage to the former drug lord's stronghold. But stepping into this "city of perpetual spring," I was truly captivated by its vibrant energy!
🚠 The Transformation of a Crime City: My First Impressions of Medellín In the 1980s, this was one of the most dangerous cities in the world with the highest murder rate, and the stronghold of drug lord Pablo Escobar. Despite its heavy history, Medellín is now incredibly modern, even boasting Colombia's only metro system. Interestingly, photography is prohibited inside the metro (the rules are extremely strict!). And while walking on the streets, locals will still kindly remind you to put your camera away; safety awareness is still essential.
What impressed me most was the city's urban planning. Five cable cars connect the mountain city, and there's a highly developed U-bike network, making commuting and exercise incredibly convenient. 🎨 Medellín boasts a vibrant street art and cultural atmosphere. It's the hometown of the famous painter Fernando Botero, who donated numerous giant, round sculptures in the city center, creating many humorous and photogenic scenes.
If you enjoy street art, Comuna 13 is a must-visit! Formerly a dangerous slum, it's now covered in colorful graffiti and even has outdoor escalators to climb. Although it's become somewhat commercialized with tourists, the atmosphere is still very lively.
🧗♂️ Challenge yourself with 700 steps: Guatapé's magnificent Thousand Islands. About a two-hour drive from Medellín, Guatapé is definitely worth setting aside a day for! To see the legendary Thousand Islands, I bravely climbed 700 steps to the top of Peñón de Guatapé (the giant rock). The view from the top was absolutely breathtaking; the lake's tranquil surface dotted with greenery was truly awe-inspiring.
After hiking, be sure to visit the town of Guatapé. The houses are brightly colored, adorned with charming Zócalos (carpets) on the walls. Watching golf carts weave through the alleyways while strolling around with a cup of coffee in hand is incredibly chill.
🍜 Must-Try Foods in Colombia:
Bandeja Paisa (Medellín Platter): This is the most impressive local dish! It includes fried pork rinds, minced beef, red bean soup, avocado, white rice, and a fried egg. Although it's high in calories, the crispy fried pork rinds are truly addictive.
Arepa (Tortillas): A national dish of Colombia. In Medellín, you'll often find thin tortillas topped with cheese or butter, sold everywhere on the streets.
Mondongo (Tripe Soup): A very rich and hearty dish, locals love to eat this for lunch—warming and filling.

Medellin
📍 Place: Medellín
✨ What it felt like:
I spent most of my time walking through leafy neighborhoods, riding the metro, and stopping at small cafés. The weather stayed comfortable almost all day, which made exploring feel easy and unhurried. Even busy areas still had pockets of calm streets and local life.
👀 What stood out:
The mountain views around the city were constantly visible and gave Medellín a unique atmosphere. I also noticed how clean and organized the metro system felt compared to many large cities. In places like Comuna 13, the street art and music added a creative energy, while neighborhoods like El Poblado felt more relaxed in the evenings with outdoor dining and tree-lined streets.
💡 Exclusive tip:
Use the metro and cable cars at least once during the day. The views over the hills are worth it, and traveling that way gives a better sense of the city beyond the usual tourist areas.
❤️ Personal feeling:
Medellín felt warm in more ways than one. It’s the kind of city where I could imagine spending longer mornings with family, enjoying coffee slowly, and exploring without strict plans.

Tour Comuna 13
Comuna 13 in Medellín is one of Colombia's must-see spots.
It was once infamous for being a battleground for drug cartels and known for its danger, but now it has transformed into a vibrant and colorful area filled with art.
(When walking through the tourist-friendly areas, I didn't feel any sense of danger.)
From the city center, take the metro to San Javier station, and then transfer to bus 225 🚇.
You can also hire a local tour guide to learn more about the area, which is highly recommended for those who want a deeper understanding!
