Nottingham Castle
This summer's road trip took us to a place steeped in legend—Nottingham. It boasts not only ancient castles but also the legendary tale of Robin Hood, the hero who robbed the rich to help the poor and was a master archer. As the car wound its way through the edge of the dense Sherwood Forest, my child excitedly asked, "Daddy, does Robin Hood really live here?" First Stop: Searching for the Legendary Hero—The Robin Hood Statue and the Ancient City Walls Our first stop in Nottingham was the famous Robin Hood Statue. This bronze statue, standing outside the walls of Nottingham Castle, perfectly captures the hero's pose—bow drawn, ready to pounce. I knelt down and read the inscription beside the statue with my child. This memorial was donated to the city in 1949 by Mr. Philip E.F. Clay to celebrate Nottingham's 500th anniversary. Besides Robin Hood himself, the reliefs depict his companions: the strong Little John, the kind Brother Tucker, and the brave Marian. We strolled along the towering medieval walls, the thick stone bearing the marks of history. Looking at the powerful buttresses, I told my child the story of Robin Hood's battle of wits with the Sheriff of Nottingham here. For the child, it wasn't just stone and bronze statues, but a living legend. Second Stop: Strolling Along the Castle Edge – Experiencing the Castle's Majesty Afterwards, we arrived at the entrance to Nottingham Castle. Although the castle has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, its columned stone gate still exudes an aura of authority. The architecture here is characterized by the interplay of limestone and red brick, showcasing typical English defensive architecture. The child ran on the lawn in front of the castle, imagining himself as a little knight guarding the castle. Watching his happy figure against the backdrop of the ancient architecture, this contrast across time is the most captivating moment of a road trip. A delightful surprise on the return journey: A serene old church On our way back from exploring Nottingham city, we stumbled upon an old church (Old Parish Church). Nestled quietly in the greenery, this church boasts exquisite Gothic square towers and an antique clock. Unlike the solemnity of the castle, the church exuded a profound tranquility. The red brick base and the weathered stone above told the story of this land's daily life over centuries. We walked quietly along the iron fence outside the church, watching the sunset cast its glow on the ancient stone walls. This serenity provided a gentle ending to our exhilarating adventure. Father and Son Road Trip Notes (Trips) Location of the Robin Hood Statue: The statue is located on the lawn below the castle (Castle Road). It's free to visit and perfect for taking photos. Crypt Adventure: Below Nottingham Castle are many fascinating man-made caves. If you have the energy, a guided tour with children to explore this mysterious underground world is highly recommended. Convenience by Car: Nottingham city centre has ample parking; it's recommended to park in the paid car park near the castle, from where you can easily walk to all the attractions mentioned above. Background Information: Before the trip, review Robin Hood cartoons or storybooks with your child. Their excitement will be doubled when they see the statue in person! Nottingham is a city that perfectly blends courage, history, and architectural beauty. If you'd like to give your child a trip about "justice" and "legend," be sure to add it to your road trip list this summer! #travel2026 #travel
