#mustvisitattractions Rotterdam is a vibrant Dutch city known for its modern architecture, cultural hotspots, and lively harbor. A must-visit attraction is the Markthal, an impressive horseshoe-shaped building combining a bustling market with residential apartments, where colorful murals and fresh local produce create an immersive experience. For architecture enthusiasts, the Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) offer a quirky, futuristic perspective on urban design, and you can even step inside the show cube to see the unique interiors. Art lovers should head to Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, home to masterpieces from classical to contemporary art. Stroll along the Erasmus Bridge, an elegant symbol of the city connecting north and south Rotterdam, especially beautiful at sunset when its silhouette reflects on the Maas River. For a panoramic view, visit the Euromast, where you can enjoy sweeping cityscapes and even dine at the top. Rotterdam’s mix of innovation, culture, and dynamic urban life makes it a must-visit destination in the Netherlands.
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
If you think of Rotterdam and only picture modern skyscrapers and industrial ports, you’re missing out on its soft side. I just spent a few days here, and honestly, spring looks so good on this city. While everyone else is fighting the crowds at Keukenhof, the canals in Rotterdam are quietly putting on their own show. Here’s a little peek into my favorite moments: Blossom Watch: I found these stunning pink trees reflected in the canals (check the photos—the water was like a mirror!). It’s the perfect spot for a slow morning walk before the city fully wakes up. Art & Architecture: Stopped by the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen area. Even if you don’t go inside, the outdoor sculptures (like the massive Picasso!) and the surrounding architecture are such a vibe. Matcha Breaks: Found a cute outdoor spot with bamboo tables for a mid-day caffeine fix. There is nothing better than a creamy matcha latte and some sunshine on your face after a long winter. Rotterdam feels so much more "lived-in" and creative than the typical tourist traps. It’s edgy, it’s green, and right now, it’s very, very pink. 🌸 Tips for your visit: Rent a bike: It’s the only way to see the different neighborhoods properly. Look up: The architecture here is wild—every corner has a building that looks like it’s from the future. Layers are key: The Dutch sun is lovely, but that North Sea breeze is real! #europetrip #rotterdam #netherlands #springineurope #traveldiary #blossomseason #hiddengem #tripmoments
Kinderboerderij de Kraal
If you're staying in Rotterdam, I really recommend taking half a day to visit Kinderdijk. Nineteen windmills line the canal, and the scene is much more beautiful in person than in photos. Cycling is the most comfortable way to explore. I used to recommend taking the Waterbus, which takes about half an hour and allows you to bring your bike. The scenery along the way is also nice. Once you arrive, rent a bike and cycle along the main road, then turn onto the small paths by the canal. You don’t really need to plan a route; just ride around and everything looks great. The whole trip is only a few kilometers and not tiring at all. The highlight of this route is to "stop as you ride." Whenever you see beautiful reflections, bridges, or curves, stop to take photos. Especially during early morning or late afternoon when the light is low, the windmills and water make for stunning shots. It gets a bit busier around noon, so if you can go early or wait until evening, it will be much quieter. The wind is really strong, so even in summer, it’s advisable to bring a jacket. There are simple coffee shops on site, but the options are limited. I usually cycle back to Rotterdam to eat after the ride. If you’re hesitating about whether to go, don’t overthink it—it’s closer and easier than Giethoorn, less commercialized, and perfect for a casual half-day trip. In short: no need for a guide, just ride when you get there, any way you ride is great 🚴
FENIX
Spring Festival Reverse Travel: Encounter a Silver Breeze at Rotterdam's Century-Old Warehouse This Spring Festival, I avoided the crowds and chose a quiet reverse journey, traveling far to Rotterdam, Netherlands, to visit a newly emerging landmark hidden in the port—the Fenix Immigration Museum. Here, there is no bustling festive atmosphere, only a gentle dialogue between time and architecture, perfect for slow walking and quiet viewing. The museum is located on the Katendrecht Peninsula, formerly a century-old maritime warehouse built in 1923, which witnessed countless immigrants' departures and returns. Today, it has been revitalized by Ma Yansong's MAD Architects, becoming the first cultural landmark by a Chinese architect in Europe. The heavy texture of the old building is fully preserved, with rough concrete walls bearing the marks of time. Stepping inside, you can almost hear the footsteps and waves from a hundred years ago. The most stunning feature is the silver tornado observation staircase spiraling up the center of the building. The 550-meter-long, 30-meter-high double-helix structure was designed with input from a roller coaster team. Two ribbon-like staircases intertwine, light yet powerful. The mirrored stainless steel surface acts like a flowing mirror, reflecting pedestrians, the port, and the sky. As light and shadow shift, the tough industrial style perfectly blends with a dynamic futuristic feel. Climbing the 336 wooden steps steadily, the view gradually opens up, with new surprises at every turn. At the 24-meter-high observation deck, panoramic views of the Maas River and Rotterdam Port unfold before you. The sea breeze gently brushes past as you look back at the people who set off from here a century ago in pursuit of their dreams. The weight of history and the freedom of the present intertwine, deeply moving the heart. The 6,750-square-meter green ecological roof crowns the old building with a gentle green hat, providing insulation and water storage—subtle yet healing. The free public square on the east side is inclusive and relaxed, showcasing the warmth of this city. The Spring Festival doesn't have to be noisy. At the Fenix Museum, meet history and embrace art. This quiet and healing reverse journey is enough to cherish a whole year's worth of tenderness.
FENIX
During the Spring Festival, we usually rush home for reunion, but I chose to travel in the opposite direction to the FENIX Immigration Museum on the south bank of Rotterdam, Netherlands. In the foreign winds, I came to understand the meaning of every departure and return. This is Katendrecht, a European immigrant gateway to the world since the 19th century and the entry point for Chinese into Europe, where the earliest Chinatown took root. A century ago, millions boarded ships by the Meuse River with anxiety and hope, heading to the unknown; today, this museum named "Phoenix," like a bird reborn from ashes, holds the nostalgia and courage that span mountains and seas. The building was originally the 1923 San Francisco warehouse, once the largest warehouse complex in the world. It was scarred by World War II bombings but has been reborn under MAD's design. The most moving feature is the silver whirlwind observation deck, with a spiral staircase rising like a sculpture from the ground to the sky, resembling the countless immigrants’ drifting yet upward life paths. Climbing the stairs, the wind brushes past your ears, as if you can hear the echoes of ship horns from a century ago. Overlooking the cityscape of Rotterdam, history and future converge here. Inside, the "Labyrinth" made up of 2,000 suitcases each holds a migration story—escape, journey, homecoming—concealing untold warmth and resilience. Over 200 immigration-themed artworks use images and creations to tell the stories of people worldwide in search of home. The festive bustle of the Spring Festival is hidden in distant fireworks, while the quiet here brings peace to the heart. Avoid the crowds, slow down at this niche landmark, watch the phoenix take flight, and listen to the whispers of time. This Spring Festival, no need to be crowded—at the FENIX Museum, encounter century-old migration stories and understand that every journey is for a better return, and every piece of nostalgia is the warmest reunion in the heart.
