Pre Rup has a completely different feeling from some of the other temples in Angkor. The warm reddish-brown color of the brick and laterite really stands out, especially under the open sky. Walking up the stepped pyramid, I liked seeing how the different levels gradually reveal the brick towers above. The five towers on the upper platform give the temple its distinctive shape, with the larger central tower rising above the others. Built in 961 AD during the reign of King Rajendravarman II, Pre Rup was dedicated to Shiva. Even after so many centuries, the scale of the temple is still impressive when you stand at the base and look up at the towers. I also enjoyed the texture of the old materials here. The combination of weathered brick, laterite and sandstone gives the whole temple a warm, earthy appearance that is quite different from temples built mainly from gray stone. The elevated position also gives a nice sense of the surrounding landscape. After spending time looking at the architecture, it is worth taking a moment to look outward and enjoy the open view. One of the familiar sights on the way from Angkor Wat to Bayon Temple is this beautiful gate of Angkor Thom. I always find the stone figures along the causeway interesting. The weathered faces and details show their age, but they still give the entrance a strong presence. Walking across the bridge and seeing the gate framed by the trees makes the approach feel quite special. On this visit, the sky added something unexpected. The moat was calm enough to reflect the trees and the stone surroundings, while a soft rainbow appeared across the clouds behind the gate. I didn't expect to capture that moment, so it ended up being one of my favorite details from these photos. Wat Athvea has a different feeling from many of the better-known temples around Siem Reap. It is not covered with elaborate carvings, and its relatively simple stonework gives the site a more straightforward, solid appearance. The central sanctuary immediately catches my attention. A sandstone tower rises above the main structure, with a stone-paved walkway leading toward the entrance. Around it, the laterite enclosure walls and smaller ruined structures give a good sense of the original layout of the temple. Walking around the courtyard, I noticed details that are easy to miss at first — the stone columns and balustraded windows, framed doorways, and carved pediments above some of the entrances. They are much more restrained than the decoration found at some of the larger Angkor temples. The surrounding ruins also show how much of the complex has changed over time. Some sections have collapsed, leaving blocks of stone scattered across the grassy courtyard, while other parts are supported by scaffolding as restoration work continues. What I liked most was the atmosphere. Large trees provide shade around the temple, while the open lawn and blue sky make the sandstone and laterite stand out clearly. With fewer elaborate details competing for attention, it is easy to slow down and look at the structure itself. Wat Athvea is close to Siem Reap, but it feels quite separate from the busier temple experience. I stayed a little longer at Phnom Krom to watch the sunset over the landscape below. The view opened out across the water and surrounding plains, with the last light of the day reflecting across the surface. The colors kept changing as the sun moved lower—bright orange and gold near the horizon, with deeper red and purple appearing higher in the sky. What I liked most was the contrast between the colorful sky and the dark hillside in the foreground. The trees and hill became almost completely silhouetted, while the water below continued to catch the remaining light. For a few minutes, everything seemed to slow down. There wasn't much to do except stand there, watch the colors change, and enjoy the view. I think this is one of the nice things about exploring around Siem Reap.
