It’s an excellent choice for experiencing Norway’s "Fjord to Table" philosophy! Whether you're navigating snowy streets in winter or enjoying a summer breeze, walking the length of Storgata is a breeze. Most shops don't open until after 10:00 AM, so aim for a late-morning stroll to browse for unique finds. In winter, it gets dark by 5:00 PM, so start your day early; in summer, you can take your time thanks to the long daylight hours. Transport & Practical Info Getting around downtown Tromsø is a breeze. You can take a direct bus from the airport to the city center, and most attractions along the main street are within a 10-to-15-minute walk of each other—no need to worry about getting lost! If you have heavy luggage, there are storage lockers located at the Nerstranda Shopping Center and near major transport hubs.

We had always wanted to visit Tromsø, but we decided to go in summer rather than winter. Our idea was simple: enjoy the incredible Arctic scenery without the crowds and freezing temperatures of the winter season—and escape the European heatwaves for a few days somewhere cooler. It turned out to be a great decision. We spent four nights in Tromsø in mid-August, and from the moment we arrived, the city surprised us. The almost-midnight sun, the cool Arctic air and the combination of colourful buildings, mountains and water make Tromsø incredibly beautiful. At the same time, it doesn’t feel like a sleepy Arctic town. The city is vibrant, with plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés. 🌊 The highlight: #sommaroy If there is one place I would recommend above everything else, it’s Sommarøy. Tromsø itself is beautiful, but Sommarøy feels almost magical. The combination of turquoise water, white beaches, dramatic mountains and fjords makes it one of those places where you constantly want to stop and take pictures. I highly recommend booking a guided tour to explore the area and see its different highlights. And here’s a useful tip: don’t worry if you miss out on a boat trip. The fjords and scenery can be explored and photographed beautifully from a van as well as from a boat. For photography, Sommarøy was definitely our favourite. 🍺 Tromsø is surprisingly good for food and drinks One thing we really enjoyed was the food scene. Yes, Tromsø is expensive—very expensive, actually, even for someone living in Paris. But the restaurants we tried were genuinely excellent, and the food was one of the pleasant surprises of the trip. The city also apparently has one of the highest numbers of bars per capita in Norway, which translates into plenty of cosy places to have a good beer. Our recommendations: · Walter and Leonard · Casa Inferno · Nitty Gritty · Ølhallen Brewpub — definitely a must · Balthazar Bar — another must If you enjoy good food, craft beer and cosy bars, Tromsø won’t disappoint. 🌦️ Don’t trust the weather forecast too much The weather is very unpredictable. During the same day, conditions can change surprisingly quickly, so I wouldn’t take the forecast too seriously when planning every hour of your trip. Instead, come prepared for Arctic summer weather. At minimum, I’d recommend having: A T-shirt + a sweater + a raincoat + a scarf/shawl. You might need all four on the same day! And one lesson we learned: if it’s raining heavily, skip the boat trip. The experience simply isn’t worth it in bad weather. There are plenty of other things you can do instead, and you can always come back to the fjords when the weather improves. 🚶 Getting around Tromsø The good news is that Tromsø is relatively small, and you can do most things on foot. If you want to use public transportation, download the Svipper app before your trip. You can use it to manage bus and ferry tickets and make getting around much easier. 💰 Yes, Tromsø is expensive I knew Norway was expensive, but Tromsø still managed to surprise me. One of the best ways I saved money was actually before the trip. I kept watching the hotel prices rather than booking immediately. Prices changed considerably from month to month, and by waiting and monitoring them, I managed to save around €350 on our hotel stay. So if you’re planning a trip, don’t just look at the hotel price once and book it. Keep an eye on it. ❄️ So, is summer in Tromsø worth it? Absolutely. We originally thought that visiting Tromsø in summer might mean missing out on the classic Arctic experience. Instead, we discovered a completely different side of the city: cool weather, almost-midnight sun, spectacular landscapes, vibrant bars and restaurants, and far fewer of the difficulties that come with travelling in the Arctic during winter. And perhaps one of my favourite things about Tromsø was something completely unexpected: The people. Despite living in such a cold environment, everyone we met was incredibly kind and warm. So if you’re looking for an Arctic escape without necessarily wanting to deal with extreme winter temperatures, don’t overlook Tromsø in summer. And whatever you do, make time for #sommaroy.

I heard that 2026 is a great year for auroras, so I went on a Nordic tour for aurora hunting 😊💓 The most amazing aurora I saw was in Tromsø, Norway! Aurora TIPS 🏷️━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ・If possible, plan your trip around the new moon. The aurora is more visible without the interference of moonlight! ・Joining a tour is recommended. Many tours offer warm bus interiors, campfires with snacks, roasted marshmallows, and hot chocolate. Tromsø tours have a culture of "aurora chasing," where they move locations until the aurora is visible. ・Affordable tours are perfectly fine. As long as the reviews are good, you’re good to go. Personally, I recommend tours that take photos for you. ・I didn’t feel particularly cold even when outside for long periods. I never had to wait outside for the aurora to appear. Tours keep moving by bus until it’s visible, and even on your own, you can just step outside and see it ◎ ・Your fingers might get cold while taking photos, so having hand warmers is reassuring.
