"We were here, supposedly, for one night prior to going to elsewhere and then returning here for 2 further nights prior to returning to the UK. However COVID19 had different ideas and we only got the first night. But we would quite liked to have been quarantined here thank you - sadly not to be. Reached via a taxi from the airport - and it's a 40-60 minute drive depending on traffic. Situated in the old town - means it's still got genuine people and some real character about it - you do wonder quite where you are going until the front glass door is opened to welcome you. I read somewhere that this is rated as the 6th best Hotel in the world. I've no idea if that's representative or not but we were blown away by our short time here. Staff 'appear' from who knows where - by this I mean service is superb and all but invisible. We had a luxury room, no real view but probably one of the largest rooms and bearing in mind this was a private residence in an earlier life. Beds - lovely linen, nice balance for the mattress. En-suite bigger than some Hotel rooms I've stayed in and everything nice and light. On our way to the Hotel we'd been advised NOT to go out into the Old Town but if we did to make sure we left cameras, phones and any money we didn't need in the Hotel. Spooked a little we didn't go out that evening but we did decide to venture out the next morning. At no time did I feel threatened or uneasy but this was helped in no small part by the proliferation of police / security guards and I do mean they were thick on the ground. At no time were you probably more than 50yds from someone who looked like they were alert and prepared to act. Huge tick. One thing to mention here is the flowers in the Hotel especially the reception area. Simply jaw dropping. We were sorry to leave without the opportunity to stay longer but closed borders and governmental directives dictated we get home - so we left and were lucky enough to get on a plane home. However, if we do go back to finish the holiday so cruelly cut short - this will be on our must see / stay list. Hugely recommended."
"I took my son and daughter-in-law & 3 grandchildren to Quito , the Galápagos Islands, and Mashpi. We were there for 3 nights the 1st week of March before the pandemic became so widespread. I’m writing this because we loved this hotel any the staff was so fantastic that if travel becomes possible again, I would go back in a heartbeat. We arrived close to midnight and were greeted with juice. When we went to our rooms, one of the staff came by to see if we would like sandwiches as it was so late . They were wonderful; unfortunately the children fell asleep and missed theirs. The service sets this apart—it’s what I call “old school” throughout. Breakfasts were excellent and the day we left for Mashpi, we were running late,so I was able to pack a box. We are dinner there 2 nights because we really were too tired to go out. The food and service were outstanding and there was a nice wine list. We didn’t get to use the rooftop bar because of the rain but the view was wonderful. The downstairs bar had interesting drinks and we were given complimentary drink tickets. Fruit and desserts were in the rooms. Thought the beds were especially comfortable. People were so kind. I am hoping that all of you and your families are safe and healthy and when this madness ends, people will be able to enjoy your wonderful hotel again."
"Casa Gangotena is an extraordinary boutique hotel, with an exceptional staff. If I could give them 10 stars I would. Five stars for the amazing restoration work and décor. The 3rd floor terrace gave a wonderful view of the plaza with many seating areas to relax. Five stars for the outstanding staff. When we arrived, we were asked if we would like to have a tour of the hotel to learn it’s history. We had planned a wonderful trip for our 20th anniversary. Casa Gangotena’s thoughtful gestures made it even more special. However, after 24 hours everything changed. An unexpected trip to the hospital and the Covid-19 pandemic hit Ecuador. Casa Gangotena sent Doris with us to the hospital where she spent hours with my husband to ensure we understood everything that was happening. Neither my husband nor I speak Spanish, so this was a great relief. After being transferred to another hospital the hotel called everyday to see if there was anything they could do. When the Casa Gangotena closed due to the Covid-19, they continued to check on how we were doing. So, while our trip was not the adventure we planned, Casa Gangotena went over and above to ensure that we were safe. Given the opportunity to return, we would do so without hesitation."

"February 2020, I loved this hotel. A warm welcome into a beautiful unexpected space. The staff spoke perfect English and we were helped to our rooms. Large, comfortable and architecturally interesting clean rooms with luxurious bathrooms. We were not expecting this at this price. The delicious breakfast is included and I strongly recommend you stay in for dinner one evening - it is an amazing, creative kitchen dishing out the most delicious food possible. Very accommodating, we had to leave at 4AM and they put out a coffee urn on our floor to self serve a coffee when we woke up and they packed us a little bag breakfast to take along - so nice. Located in the old section makes it a very short walk to all points of interest. BTW - if you knit - it’s time to stock up on supplies and yarns for a fraction of the price. Eat some delicious street food or any restaurant (ask the front desk for recommendations)."
"This surpased my expectations. Had hear about it and actually chose if due to the article in Time magazine. We thought it would be nice to stay in the downtown of Quito, we really enjoyed ILLA. Staff was really friendly and always looking after us. Mateo was always asking us how we were and making sure all our needs were in place. I loved having the mineral water face mask suggested, it was quite refreshing and a unique experience. We loved placing gold leaf on the wooden door replicas, this was a treat after the city tour. My kids love arts and crafts and it was so much fun for them, the fact it was real gold swet us away. Rooms are charming and full of character, the water patio is so inspiring, the spa treatments are on spot for the weary traveler and the location unbeatable. The place lived up to its reputation. Highly recommended."
"Located on a side street in Old Town Quito this hotel surprises and delights with every detail. It has a beautiful open water filled, foyer when you enter that immoderately transforms you away from the busy streets outside. The rooms were perfectly appointed with many special features including dual shower heads, local art, automatic lights, separate toilet room and all the travel necessities. Outside our room was a food and drink station with unique and delicious treats. Breakfast which was included was delicious and plentiful. Outdoor balconies overlooking city were also nice and relaxing for drinks. Each day the hotel has an experience for their guests like making coco tea which adds to the fun. Staff was attentive and friendly. Short walk to main square in old town. A must stay!"

" I wondered if perhaps they had mistaken us for someone else..they were so happy to see us. But no, it didn't end at reception. At meals, staff would give impromptu musical performances of such sincerity and authenticity that we felt we had been part of an ancient ceremony. We found ourselves preferring to hang out in the hotel rather than around the town, which was also charming. When we came back to the hotel after a week in other parts of Ecuador it was "welcome home" all over again. They had upgraded our room and on the following morning when we had to leave before dawn they opened the restaurant with full service an hour early to accommodate us. The food was a culinary experience in itself, creative and healthy presentations of regional authentic traditions. The five cheese quinoa was to die for. We plan to go back just for the magic of the place even though we don't usually visit the same place twice."
"The stay at Mama Cuchara was outstanding. Service is great, rooms are outstanding. The only drawback is the hotel is located in an area that you cannot go out after dark because of safety reasons. If you wish to go out, you must have a taxi come to the hotel to take you where you want to go. Also, make sure you use a taxi upon returning to the hotel. During the day, it is safe to walk around the area where the hotel is located. Breakfast is included in the room rate."
"Stayed 2 nights with my family. Rooms we initially received were dark with no external windows. Manager upgraded 2 rooms and we paid upgrade for other room. Rooms were pleasant however the hotel in right on the edge of the old town and a 15 minute walk from the main squares or decent restaurants. Management and staff of hotel were exceptional and made up for the fact that the hotel had no atmosphere in the dining area or bar. Was not really the kind of place you want to spend time other than to sleep. Congratulations to the staff of your exceptional job. "

"We stayed here on 3 different occasions during our tour of Ecuador and were very satisfied each time. It felt like we were returning home after each adventure. Rooms are eclectic and also well equipped with what we needed. We suggest an inside room with a balcony over courtyard. The street front rooms can be noisy. Buffet breakfast was included in their beautiful courtyard dining area. There are many comfortable common living areas throughout the hotel which we took advantage of for more relaxing space. Door staff and desk staff were accommodating, lovely and friendly with special recognition to Ricardo and Jimmy. Location was also excellent for walking old town being 1 block from from central square. We would highly recommend this hotel for your Quito visit."
"We stayed at this hotel twice, during our travels in South America. It has a lovely, old style charm - something that is completely missing in modern hotels. From the moment you walk in the door, you are greeted with warm, friendly smiles. The hotel is perfectly located - only a few minutes walk to the town centre and numerous other attractions and restaurants."
"Great hotel in a very advantageous location for exploring old town Quito. Staff was very courteous and helpful. Local music serenaded us in the evening which was a great welcome to Ecuador. Very accommodating. "

Calle Esmeraldas Oe3-30 y Guayaquil, Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador
"The best parts of this stay were personally provided by Mario and Blanca, the on-site owners. They are completely available, helpful but not smothering, and clearly passionate about their jobs and putting themselves into this property - this is evident in the wine room, for example, which has its own history, and the upstairs terrace. We arrived late at night and Mario was up to greet us, lead us in, show us to our room, and leave us be. Breakfast evidenced the same personal service - you arrive when you like, but you eat family-style in a room right off the visible kitchen, which makes you feel part of a working home but is also flexible to your preferences. The location is in the historic center but a bit away from the heart of the action. The hotel itself is centered around an enclosed courtyard. I took a star away because, for the price, the room is not amazing. It's dark due to the wood shutters (these can be opened, but because of the courtyard-style of the place it inhibits privacy and still doesn't let in much light), the shower is located inside the room with just some glass to enclose it, and it's all just a bit dingy from the mediocre paint job and other small touches. None of this would be a problem at all, except that it is significantly more expensive than other options. That said, there is no substitute for the personal touch, which Casa El Eden has more than anywhere I've been recently. I'd happily go back."
"Wonderful location in the old town, a gracious host, large room with the softest towels and the best breakfast ever. Mario took excellent care of us for our four nights at his hotel, always around with excellent suggestions for sites to see and restaurants. There is a lovely outdoor area on the roof as well as small lounges throughout the hotel to relax in. Mario was a great help to us when one of us came down with intestinal issues. He can arrange transportation as well."
"An absolutely charming "home away from home." The building is historic and immaculately kept. Our room was very large and modern without losing the historic feel of the building. Our hosts, Mario and Blanca, took excellent care of us and made us feel like family. Stay here in Quito -- you'll be glad you did."

Benalcázar N6-26 y Mejía, Centro Historico, Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador
"We stayed here for 4 nights and absolutely loved it. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The room we stayed in was very spacious with a loft. Gorgeous little hotel. The location is also perfect, very close to the central square. We enjoyed the rooftop and ordered snacks and drinks on our last night which were delicious."
"The restaurant evening meal was expensive and awful - the "special vegetable broth" was literally a few pieces of pre-boiled veg and hot water - no stock / flavour / seasoning, the guinea pig main was one tiny leg with about as much meat on as a couple of rashers of bacon and desert came in a wine glass but sideways so we worried we would break the stem trying to get it out. The choice was limited as they had run out of a lot of stuff. The bedroom was noisy and some of the staff were fairly clueless though very friendly. I struggled to pay our bill as i couldn't make the lady at reception understand that we had drunk a beer from the minibar, and then they didn't have any change for $100 note (bill was $89)."
"The hotel was beautiful and the location was convenient but everything in the hotel and the fees felt over priced for Quito. The service was just ok and while we enjoyed it, it felt like with more research we could have found somewhere still very charming and convenient with more appropriate rates. That being said, the room was beautiful as was the rooftop and common space. "

"Staying at Casa San Marcos was like living in a museum. This ten room boutique hotel was more than expected. Every room of this former home was filled with beautiful antiques and artifacts. The living area provides an inviting and relaxing place to sit with friends and enjoy the ambiance of the surroundings. Our room included a separate, updated bathroom, a sitting area and a beautiful view toward the hills and angel that guards Quito. Breakfast was included and was made to order each morning. The cook and wait staff were friendly and accommodating. They served awesome coffee. The hotel was within easy walking distance to the historic center of Quito and most of the popular tourist spots. There were many great restaurant options in the historic area as well. The owner is a lovely lady who took the time to personally show us around the property and explain the history of the home. The staff was excellent and very helpful. One member of our party wanted a massage and the hotel arranged to have someone come to her room to provide the service since they do not have a massage therapist on staff. The hotel will appeal to discerning adults. It is very unique. All the guest rooms are different and the furnishings are authentic. This is truly a beautiful, boutique hotel."
"I posted this on the site where we booked and realized I forgot to post it here after our trip. We stayed in June of 2018. We loved this quirky little hotel in the heart of Old Town. It's conveniently located within walking distance of everything in Centro Historico, but tucked away on a quieter street. The whole place is quirky and artsy with interesting decor and plants everywhere. Our room was very comfortable, and the breakfast each day was delicious with a variety of fruits, juices, breads, and delicious scrambled eggs with ham and cheese. The restaurant is a lovely little place with cozy tables and a view of El Panecillo out the windows. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They arranged for a wonderful driver to pick us up at the airport on arrival and kept our bags stored for us after checkout on our last day while we spent the day sightseeing before we had to leave. We felt like we got a real taste of the warmth of Quito during our stay here and would love to stay here again on our next visit!"
"We went with entire family on October 9th. we expended two nights there. The location is ideal as we were able to visit all the colonial part of the city. We went to visit Santo Domingo Museum, the famous Virgen of Rosary chapel, and he copules of the church. Also we visited the Alabado Museum of pre columbian artifacts. The hotel is a lovely place, with a large collection of art and antiques, great service, the administrator Miss Muriel very nice and helpful, the chef excellent, we even had a cooking class of famous ceviche, and fried ice cream. We went for a tour around the neighborhood, which has 3 museums, an antiquarian shop, handicrafts, and a taylor, that makes shirts, jackets almost immediately, and they are quite fashionable. It was a memorable visit. We wil certainly recommend it."

"I stayed at the Hotel La Basilica for 3 nights at the end of a 2 week trip to Ecuador and Galapagos. To find a lovely boutique hotel minutes away from the historic centre of Quito was a real pleasure. The hotel has only recently opened, and has been converted from a traditional colonial dwelling, retaining the beautiful central courtyard and many period features. It has been refurbished to a high standard and the double room with en-suite was just perfect. The family feel of the hotel is a really asset - the owner and staff are extremely friendly and always willing to assist with recommendations and advice. I was here during the Coronavirus outbreak and they couldn’t have been more supportive and caring. Breakfasts were a pleasure - a large plate of local fruit, together with juice, breads, jams, eggs to order and fabulous strong coffee! Simple but delicious! In terms of location, both the basilica and the Plaza Grande are approximately 3-5 mins walk away. Shops and pharmacies etc are a similar distance. There are multiple good dining options close by and the La Ronda area is 10 mins walk to the south. The artisan market in Mariscal is 25 mins walk (or a short cab ride) away for those all important souvenirs, though the hotel does also have a souvenir shop attached which is very convenient. Overall I very much enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend this hotel if visiting Quito."
"This historic hotel is located within walking distance to many attractions in Quito's old town. Each of the guest rooms has a hand painted wall of one of Quito's churches. The owners and staff were both gracious and helpful in all ways, from arranging transportation to securing a guide/driver per my request (Friends Expeditions). The breakfast was not a buffet, but rather a delicious bowl of fresh fruit, served with cooked to order eggs and a tamale of sorts. It was more than ample. I feel what makes this property a standpoint is the fact the owners made me feel as though I was part of their family - always happy to see me with a hug and hear about my day. On a scale of 1 to 10 for hospitality, I give them a 20!"
"We recently stayed at the Hotel Basilica during our trip to Ecuador. The hotel itself is wonderful. Our room was spacious and very clean. The breakfast served in the hotel atrium was very good with freshly made tropical juice, fresh cut tropical fruits and pastries plus made to order eggs. The staff went out of their way to help with any questions we had with regard to restaurants and transportation. The Hotel is located in the Heart of Old Town with many attractions within walking distance.If/when we return to Quito we wouldn't stay anywhere else!"

Interoceánica Camino a Mulauco Km 5., Distrito Metropolitano de Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador
"The building of Las Cuevas is a complete experience in and by itself. And it is different from anything you will find in Ecuador. Why? Because the whole complex is carved out of the mountain by one man over a period of 30 years! Contrary to what you would think, the rooms are bright and comfortable since they all face outward and each room has its own private patio with large windows. The rooms are reinforced to withstand earthquakes but have retained the typical rounded cave shape. During our stay, we had a great breakfast in a spacious and well-lit restaurant area, explored the fascinating building both inside and outside, navigated the narrow hallways, went on a somewhat challenging 3-hour guided hike around the hacienda (bring suitable shoes if you choose this option!), took a dip in the jacuzzi, enjoyed the views from the outside area and the rooftop, had a great night’s sleep in a warm and comfortable room, took a relaxing shower, and unwound by the charming man-made lake in front of the main entrance. Be aware that you will need to reserve your room in advance! The road leading to the hotel is a narrow dirt road so be sure your car can handle some rough terrain. It’s a fun ride though! If you have a chance to stay at Las Cuevas, grab it! It is the most charming and unique accommodation you will experience in Ecuador."
"My family of 4 stayed for one night between the Galapagos and our flight home. I wish we could have stayed longer since we arrived late in the afternoon and left at 4:30 am. The staff could not be nicer or more welcoming, giving us a tour of the hotel and explaining the history. We hadn't discussed dinner in advance (this is very remote so the only option is to eat there) but they prepared a delicious 3 course meal with wine for just $30 per person. It was the perfect end top an amazing vacation. Because we were just staying one night, I booked the family room and it is huge. It is definitely a bit off the beaten path and be prepared for a harrowing ride through the countryside to get there. It took about 1/2 hour from the Quito airport."
"My husband and I were stunned by the artistic beauty of this hotel, dug out of volcanic rock and transformed into elegant rooms with hand-painted walls and exquisite decorative touches throughout the common spaces. If you are impressed by Gaudi in Barcelona, and Guayasamin in Quito, then you are probably the type of people who will appreciate this hotel, conceived by an architect/engineer with soaring ambition. The hotel is situated in an idyllic green valley, at the end of a long, winding, rocky road. We were sorry our stay was limited to just one night. The chef is excellent--plan to eat dinner here. "
