"We visited at a similar time last year and liked it so much we came back! Easy to get to on public transport so it was nice not to have to hire a car. We caught the train from Naples to Agropoli and a bus to San Marco. Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean and well-serviced throughout our stay. The balcony offered beautiful view across the harbour and it was lovely to fall asleep to the sound of the sea. The pool and beach area are also well kept. The pool is colder than the sea, but I imagine that is a welcome relief at the height of summer! The breakfast buffet was healthy, delicious and plentiful - we were spoilt for choice! Staff were efficient and friendly. The spa is a real delight. There is a series of 7 different experiences, eg salt treatment, seaweed, steam, sauna, floatation pools etc as well as the indoor/outdoor saltwater pool and relaxation areas. Excellent facilities, high standard of cleaning, efficient staff. Bliss! If you can tear yourself away from the hotel, there are plenty of lovely walks to Punta Licosa and on to Ogliastra and there is a local shuttle service to pick you up if you don’t fancy the walk back. We also took the bus to Paestum for the day. There is a pretty path that takes you along to the beach at Santa Maria, where we ate one evening before walking back. Once we had checked out of our room, we were welcome to use the pool and spa for the day as we were not flying until much later that night. Highly recommended."
"I stayed with my wife in this hotel late December / early January: we loved it! Our room was spacious and very clean with a great view on the beach and see (unfortunately it was not the right season for a bath but the see and beach looked very nice). The guy at the reception was very nice and helped us with the luggage. Cleaning lady comes once in the morning and another time in the afternoon asking whether we needed something. Breakfast was delicious and included several things: great the Mozzarella!! But maybe the best and most interesting thing of this hotel is its SPA: the first Spa in Italy using water from the sea. In particular, we really appreciated the Salt cave! Definitely recommended for finding peace and relax in a lovely place in Italy!"
"La SPA e' piccola ma molto ben disegnata, un'esperienza molto rilassante da inserire nel calendario di una vacanza a castellabate. This is a very nice SPA, small but cozy, you will enjoy and relax for one day!"

"We visited as a mixed group, one family and two friend and we occupied 3 rooms, one double, one triple and one single. The rooms are generally well appointed and 2 were facing the sea with a really magnificent view. Wifi is available throughout the hotel. The staff was courteous and efficient, we would like in particular to mention Chiara, the property manager, who went out of her way to make our stay amazing organizing visits to a vineyard (spectacular) and to a bio farm were the local mozzarella cheese is produced. We are also thankful to Adolfo, the owner, that for us organized a boat trip at sunset to the nearby island of Licosa and offered us an excellent bottle of local sparkling wine. The hotel has a very good restaurant too. We dined in one nigh and we really enjoyed the specialties of the Cilento region, the fresh sea food and the way in which vegetables are prepared (the eggplants and zucchini in particular). We all enjoyed our visit to Cilento and our stay at Il Cefalo. Congratulations guys, you made us to feel welcomed."
"A terrific location away from the crowds and overlooking an attractive beach was a good start. A room with a view onto a terrace overlooking the sea was also a plus point. Add to all that was the fact that the hotel was clean and the staff were friendly. A good start However, we did feel a little isolated from the rest of the world in the hotel and the perilous parking lot effectively discouraged you from heading out to neighbouring restaurants. That would have been fine had the in-house food been good but it was adequate at best. So, for us a perfectly pleasant stay but with better quality furnishings and a higher standard of food, a good hotel would have morphed into an excellent one. I sympathise with the parking, however. Not the easiest place to inject a more adequate carpark!"

"Just returned from a 15 day trip to Italy and we spent 6 nights in this hotel. I have been to Castellabate many years ago and stayed in San Marco di Castellabate a few miles along the coast. I found San Marco a bit dismal with very few restaurants and a pretty plain harbour. What a joy to find the picturesque Santa Maria the very great example of the charming Italian sea side town that we dream of but seldom find. The town is relativily quiet during the week but comes alive at weekends with well heeled Italian families who crowd onto the organised private beaches and one free beach right in the centre of town. The harbour is bustling with restaurants and bars and has a great Italian vibe. The Grand Hotel Santa Maria is set right on the beach a few steps from the town, in fact you can walk into town along the beach passing the various lidos and restaurants along the way. We stayed in a junior suite which was spacious and light and airey. We had a balcony overlooking the beach which had the sun all afternoon and into the evening. The room was well furnished and comfortable. My only criticism would be that the shower was very small which is a shame because the bathroom is very spacious. However this did not spoil my enjoyment as the rest of the hotel is subperb. There is a private beach which is a few steps down from the hotel entrance and gives a real on the beach feling. Normally I wouldn't stay in a hotel without a pool but we didn't miss it one bit. You are allocated two sunbeds and an umberella and we were given the front row every day, which meant we only had to stagger a few meteres into the sea. The beach was clean and well kept with plenty of room between the sunbeds (usually a bit of a gripe for me as I like to be in the shade most of the day and I need to keep moving my sunbed around). There is a lovely little snack bar overlooking the beach which serves drinks and light lunches and also a proper restaurant also overlooking the beach if you want a proper lunch. We ate in the snack bar a few time and although the menu isn't very varied the mozzerella salad was fabulous. We only ate in the restaurant at night once and it was reasonable priced and adequate. The breakfast is served in a restaurant two floors up which also overlooks the beach with a lovely outside terrace. The breakfast was plentyful and varied with sweet and savoury options and an egg chef who cooked to order. Overall this hotel was everything we were looking for and we would return in a heartbeat. The staff were wellcoming and helpful. We had a problem with the blind in our bedroom, we mentioned it as we went out to dinner and it was repaired by the time we returned. Excellent service. The hotel runs a shuttle bus from Agropoli for Euro 35 each way which is good value as it is about 20 minutes away and there is no train connection to Castellabate. I totally reccomend this hotel and fully intend to return next year. Thank you for a fantastic holiday."
"Just returned from an amazing stay at the Grand Hotel Santa Maria. The sandy beach is pristine and it is within easy walking distance to the town. The whole hotel has been given a facelift and the rooms are spectacular. Our comfortable and stylish sea view deluxe room came with a huge multi feature rain shower, terrace and cool AC. The 2 restaurants on the property offer delicious local cuisine and exceptional service. In fact it is the friendly and attentive service that will bring us back here again. We are already planning our next trip! "
"Great place to stay if you're keen to relax on the beach, in the evening to have an easy bimble into town to eat, watch the sunset and the world go by. All the staff were very friendly and helpful, quite a few spoke good English. We had a corner sea view which was spacious, air conditioned with a good sized balcony. Breakfasts was an excellent continental spread, with sausage, bacon and scrambled egg out also. We'll be back when we need a place to unwind from life!"

Via Amendola 1,\N, Castellabate, Campania, Italy
"We‘ve often stayed at the old hotel, it has the best position and views in Castellabate, despite being a bit run down it had a warm friendly atmosphere and was renowned for it’s sumptuous breakfasts and excellent food. Excited to see that the hotel was being renovated six of us booked a three week stay. They have spent a year and vast amounts of money renovating it, and it does indeed look magnificent, but it’s all just superficial gloss. The new owner was only there three times in as many weeks ( once to gratuitously serve us a welcome drink and snack and then she disappeared ) she never engaged with or asked us if we were happy with everything, we were practically the only guests there. There is no manager to oversee anything and the teenage staff, although very sweet, are totally inexperienced untrained and unsupervised. BREAKFAST: An extravagant promotional party was underway when we arrived: at breakfast the next morning there were huge impressive bowls of strawberries and cherries, but we soon realised they were only the leftovers from the previous nights party; from then all we had was LOTS of cakes, a few croissants, a minute bowl of yoghurt, mouldy fruit, sometimes bread, no jam just lemon marmalade ( but home made ) and the store bought juice was watered down. The nervous staff had no idea how to even make a coffee. We didn't want just cakes for breakfast so we asked if maybe we could have some tomatoes, ham, cheese, fresh fruit and bread?…….. A few slivers of cheese and some cheap ham and salami did appear, occasionally there were a few tomatoes, often no bread and the same old mouldy fruit day after day…..After a few days of this we just went out and bought our own mozzarella, ham, tomatoes strawberries and cherries…their breakfast never did improve. THE RESTAURANT:….well it was mostly empty but we did want to try it as we thought the chef was the same fantastic one we knew from before;.. some of the antipasto were good but the pasta was cold.. and we could see why…the new trendy chef was larking around in the kitchen on his phone taking pictures. There was no wine list, no one knew even knew how to open a bottle and and the menu displayed on the board upstairs was different from that actually offered. The sheets were only changed after 6 days, we had to ask for soap and toilet paper to be replaced. The front desk is not maned 24hrs as advertised: My room was the only one with wi fi that worked.( close to the front desk) Fortunately we can manage basic Italian because only one 17 year old spoke any English. The hotel had only opened for it’s first summer season in April, we found it very strange indeed that after spending a small fortune, for three weeks, there was no owner or manager around to check and see how it was being run....."
"We were fans of this place when Franca used to own it and stayed here many times in many years. We were curious about the renewal of the place and what new management could have preserved of the unique atmosphere. We spent two nights in september. Although it's much more expensive now we are more than satisfied: It was excellent and worth the cost. The renewal, that indeed was necessar, is very well done. The character of the old building is still there with modernised rooms and facilities. The courtyard on the front that was closed for yours is a beautiful place now. The breakfast was overwhelming with lots of fresh fruits, meat, cheese, bread and all sorts of coffe, tea and cake. The service was friendly. We will return. "
"The location of palazzo Gentilcore is beautiful; setted very centrally next to the main piazza and restaurants and still in a very quite location. The house is beatifully restored and its decor shows the great taste of the owners. Very friendly staff and nice breakfast."

"Stayed here sept 2019 .there was 2 or 3 weddings on every day from Thursday when we arrived to the Tuesday when we left . The pool was closed everyday for a few hours when the weddings were taking place. At night there wasn’t much at all to do in the local area so we had to stop by the hotel but felt we shouldn’t be there as it was full of wedding guests .. the bar drinks were quite expensive too so was early to bed every night . We had breakfast and evening meals. The breakfast was mediocre and the 4 course menu at night came up with some weird stuff to say the least we are not fussy eaters but omg some of the stuff served up lol. The hotel was a 35 minute walk from the train station or a rip off 15 euro in a taxi. We got the train every day to various sites like Pompeii Vesuvius Salerno /ferry to amalfi and very easy and cheap to use .TIP..make sure you stamp your train ticket before boarding the train otherwise it’s invalid ! the hotel provided free bike rental so we went to a buffalo farm only a mile away and the paestum ruins . The hotel itself is nice but would not recommend as out the way in a very quiet scruffy village the walls are paper thin and could do with some serious sound proofing the staff friendly and helpful but the catering for weddings didn’t make it acomfortable stay for the holiday makers. We wouldn’t recommend this hotel ."
"An excellent hotel. 5 star and it really was! I can’t fault the food. It was half board but not buffet style. 4 course and 5 course if you include the bread. The only negative was the restaurant charged for the bottle of water which I think should have been included in the bill. Excellent service and very friendly, we especially liked Mario. Very comfortable bedroom which was called an elegance room. The cleaners were very friendly and not intrusive. The reception staff were very friendly and we especially liked Tina because she was particularly helpful in giving us information about any trips we wanted to make. It helped that she could speak English as her colleagues weren’t very good at English."
"Unless you are invited for a wedding, perhaps chose another hotel. Unless you have a car, chose another hotel. There is no public transport, no hotel shuttle. Taxis cost around €7 per km (€15 flat fare to the Greek Paestum temples. €30 return journey. Doable by foot kms (2 miles), but beware it is along a very busy road with no shade. Having said this the hotel is five stars, with all amenities, nice pool and jacuzzi although the wifi could be a bit better. The evening meals (half board) taken in the basement room are excellent. The issues with a wedding hotel are: 1) wedding music and noise 2) the evening space outside in the air is taken by the wedding, ordinary guests are either eating in the basement breakfast and evening meals. "We stayed for 2 weeks at this resort with our 2 small children aged 2 and 5. The establishment is beautiful and the surroundings very well kept. The pool is amazing and suitable for every age from baby to adult and the flora around the pool is stunning. The beach is a short walk away and also very well maintained and beautiful. We stayed at a family apartment which was fine, it had everything you need but the furniture is a bit dated. All in all we had a wonderful stay. We sometimes cooked ourselves and sometimes went to the restaurants. The food was very good overall. Also breakfast was lovely. I’d like to particularly point out the animation team which was amazing. Our kids didn’t go to the kids club but still they came round to chat and to inform about the daily activities (of which there are plenty not only for kids but also for adults). Pippo, Eduardo, Mike and Esther are a wonderful team and made our stay even more pleasant. If I had to change one thing that I would probably enjoy a smile from the reception staff. "
"Pros : 1-Warm and Profesional welcome in English and French 2-Very nice location (lots of trees and plants) 3-Nice pool suitable to swimmers and small kids 4- Restaurants (Pool restaurant, main one AND beach one) are great. We did appreciate the service in all these places. The beach bar is particularly nice ! 5- Direct access to the beach is easy and nice (through a forest) 6-Apartments with kitchen so you don’t need to go to the restaurant every day. Fine for the fit and the bank account :-) 7-BigArt animation team is nice ... of course they take some room and are loud but remain gentle and friendly. Cons, or to be improved : 1-Kids are not allowed to dive in the deepest area of the pool (close to restaurant) 2-Our room looked a bit outdated and the amenities are very basic ... especially when you think about the price to pay 3-Sound isolation should be improved as, from time to time, you feel like your neighbors were in your dining room :-( 4-Lifeguard on the beach (the older one) should be more polite and friendly. 5-The pool (holes in the bottom, surroundings) needs refreshing "
"On arrival the hotel looked fabulous, the reception, main toilets, bar, restaurant and pool areas are excellent. The rooms however are appalling, they looked tired, very dated and smell badly of damp. Our room had so many faults, I lost count. As a tour operator, we have stayed in hundreds of hotels all over the world, this place is NOT four star, at best it is 2 star. However the staff are helpful and indeed fixed many of the faults in our room, including fitting a new bathroom door within a few hours! There were no towels in our room, no kettle, no welcome pack or details of how to use the phone (I.e. what numbers to dial.) We booked a family suite for five people, only one bed was a bed, the rest were camping beds, one of which had no pillow and no sheet! Bathroom tiles and worktops were cracked, extractor fan caked in dirt, only one toilet roll provided (for a family of five) propped on the bidet as the holder was broken. The shower curtain was stained, the air con was dripping water and the chest of drawer knobs mismatched. These are just some of the faults. Advertised as a self catering apartment, if we had been self catering we would have struggled, no microwave, no tea towels, no washing up facilities and the very bare basic minimum of cooking equipment. The fridge appeared to be leaking constantly. Two of the camping beds were placed either side of the kitchen table. The room is very dark and the window of the bedroom looks onto a weed infested patch of dirt surrounded by a shabby (not at all chic) paint peeling concrete wall less than two metres from the window, so minimal natural light. Do not believe the website / brochure pictures, we have looked and their are no pictures of our type of room and they have many “family rooms”!) Attached are some true pictures of our room. We asked to be moved, they refused, we then asked for a partial refund, they refused. They offered a free evening meal however we could not take it up due to the restricted restaurant opening hours. In summary, if you want a 1960’s holiday camp experience at 2019 over inflated prices then this is the place for you, otherwise avoid at all costs! "

" My husband and I stayed here with 15 others when we were on tour. Our room was modern, spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed our meals. I have attached a few photos. The WIFI worked fine. From here we visited the famous lovely Ancient Greek ruins at Paestum. The ruins were very well preserved, with several temples and columns. Visitors could walk into the temples and pose for photos next to huge tall ancient columns. A lot of school children were visiting and enjoying learning about their heritage. The ruins are surrounded by large grassy lawns. The site is peaceful. "
"The hotel is simple, spacious and very clean. What is amazing is the quality of the staff.. Felt like a queen in her palace. It is close to the beautiful beach of Paestum. You need a car to reach the temples and the station. "
