Rue Jean Macé, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
"We booked this hotel as a stopover en route further south and had chosen one of the most highly rated in the area; unfortunately it didn't prove to be very enjoyable. Our room was one of the two mezzanine rooms which meant that the room itself was very small. The sitting area, on the ground floor had room for just two chairs and a small table, plus a short corridor which housed a fridge and cupboard containing a safe. The fridge didn't get very cold and the safe was locked: none of the staff knew how it worked as apparently it was new. In fact we didn't need it as the hotel was safe. Unfortunately the day we stayed it was extremely hot weather and, although the room was air-conditioned, the unit was badly sited so that the cool air blew down and the bedroom area was stiflingly hot. I was unable to even go into the area so we asked for a bed to be made up downstairs. The staff obligingly did this very quickly and I had a reasonably good night's sleep but it wasn't satisfactory to have to make do with a basic camp bed in a luxury hotel! What made this worse was the fact that guests had complained before as shown on previous reviews and, despite promising it would be rectified, nothing had been done. The hotel is situated out of town and doesn't provide meals, which entailed a return taxi journey of 30 euros. The grounds are uninspiring and contain no features such as pool etc, just a small terrace and grassed areas. Without doubt the one redeeming feature of the hotel is the staff who are absolutely lovely and cannot do enough for the guests. They are superb without exception and I trust they are paid well as they are worth their weight in gold. When we checked out I said I hoped I wouldn't be charged full price for this less-than-satisfactory stay and the bill was reduced by 20% which covered the cost of the taxi. However, I wouldn't recommend the hotel and think it is over-rated."
"This beautiful chateau style manor house is set in secluded peaceful gardens perched on a hill top overlooking the city of Brive below. You find it driving following your GPS at the end of a an impossibly convoluted route seemingly going nowhere soon, before it stops in front of the gates into an ample open car park, gardens and green parklands. Reception staff are very friendly and helpful, and quickly take you to a spacious comfortable well appointed bedroom up one flight of stairs - no elevator so keep your bags small. The same staff double as waiters in the modest restaurant where the food is far from modest, providing a beautiful menu of local cuisine and it is all unbelievably well priced."
"We arrived having booked our room on-line/e-mail. The reception was very pleasant and efficient. Within a short time we decided to stay in Brive for a second night and asked if we could stay in the same room. This was agreed without hesitation. Our room was a very good size with double aspect views over the garden area. Everything was in good order except that of three wall lights in the bathroom only one was working and we could not get the light above the mirror to work. The hotel does not provide a full restaurant service but a tapas type selection can be provided for dinner. We ate in Brive. The breakfast was very good with a selection of breads, pastries, cakes etc coffee, fruit juices, yoghurts and cereals, cold meats and cheeses and boiled eggs. We enjoyed our breakfasts! All in all we were very happy with our stay at Chateau Lacan."

Le Griffolet, Ussac, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
"The hotel is very close to the A20 motorway, easy to find and thus a good place for an overnight stay. It has a large surface car park and there are trolleys to help with luggage. We discovered that a bedside light in our room was not working. Almost immediately a manager arrived to investigate the problem. He returned with a spare bulb and when that did not solve the problem he arranged for us to move to another room immediately opposite. On taking our dog into reception the very helpful receptionist gave me directions to a lake. This was very close to, but not visible from the hotel so I was pleased to get these detailed directions. It proved an excellent place to walk with the dog. Dinner was good. We should certainly stay here again if passing through Brive."
"Arrived at 11pm. We’re stopping for an overnight stop-over while on our way back from Biscarrosse to Lyon Airport. No carpark left and we were told to park at the hotel next door, Hotel F1, which look dodgy.. knowing we have a rent car to take care of and two luggages to leave in the car, and having to push our baby stroller all the way to reception in the dark.. while so many Tesla carpark was left empty. Anyway ... 🙄 Staff could reply simple English but leaves no room to ask complex request, it will not work out well. Requested a baby cot while doing online booking and all we got is a half broken cot which could close itself anytime on our baby. So the broken baby cot did took so much space in the small tiny room; which was left unused. Breakfast was simple - croissant, coffee and orange juice is good. Easy check-out. Getting out of the route and driving back on highway was easy. Mostly personnels traveling for business can be seen on breakfast table. Not sure who patronises the pool. One night stay is good enough. Definitely not a place for two nights stay on my list! "
"A well run, very pleasant hotel. The room was excellent, everything was clean and fresh. I have stayed before and this hotel doesn't disappoint. Breakfast was very good with a good selection of dishes available. Sadly on the night I stayed (Sunday evening) the restaurant was closed but there was room service."

67/69, Avenue Jean Jaurès, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
"My husband and I stayed at the Grand Hotel Brive across the train station during our one night stop over. What a pleasant surprise to discover a nicely renovated bedroom with a small sitting area along with the nice size bathroom! Breakfast, which was included in our hotel stay, was one of the best ones we had this trip. We dined at the restaurant downstairs and enjoyed a very good dinner upon arrival. The hotel is walking distance to the lovely centre ville. Reception was friendly and gave us information about the places we wanted to visit. I would recommend this hotel. "
"Picked it for being right across from the station (train north the following morning), which makes it about a 6-7 minute walk down the hill to the pedestrian/shopping/restaurant areas. Very pleasantly surprised. Bright, clean, well-appointed room with cute little balcony; swanky bar and dining areas, especially the outdoor courtyard; very pleasant staff."
"Stayed here for one night en route to Paris by train· Spacious and very clean room with a modern en suite bathroom, balcony and effective air conditioning. Lovely courtyard restaurant serving tasty and well-presented food. Friendly and helpful staff. Quiet location directly opposite the railway station. Would certainly stay here again if in the area. "

Lieu-dit Cartassac - Route départementale 720, Sarrazac, Occitanie, France
"This is a true "auberge" or "inn" where it is an entire environment that works very well, not just a room to rent for a night or two. An excellent base if you're exploring the region. Unlike many other options in the area, this Auberge is in an open, flat area which means it stays brighter & warmer far longer that other places. Right off the road (but those thick stone walls make it quiet!) It's easy to head off for exploration and easy to come back to, great parking. If you stay here definitely plan to have dinner at least once. It is excellent - in fact I'd say dinner really made the stay especially memorable for us. Outstanding g seafood gratin starter, melt in your mouth pork, everything was so tasty and nicely presented. Price, menu varies - the evening we were there 3-courses was €24 (good value!) We also had a charcuterie platter another day when we'd had a big lunch, didn't want dinner and it was done with style. A pleasure sitting out on the patio. The Auberge has a nice dining room, a breakfast room (fair value breakfast) a lounge/bar which is perfect for planning the day especially if you are travelling with others, and a really lovely outside area with a big pool, loungers, umbrellas, drinks tables and dinner tables. We loved spending time there in the evening with a drink. The couple who run the auberge don't speak much English but they are wonderfully good humored and very welcoming, always thoughtful about our needs. While frankly the rooms are ordinary, they are pleasant - ask for a room facing the pool and the castle of Turenne up on the hill. We booked for two nights and liked it so much we added a third night. A really lovely French experience especially if you take advantage of the atmosphere."
"Stayed for one night on our way back to Spain. Very nice and comfortable rooms and welcoming atmosphere. Excellent meal in the evening and reasonably priced for France. Would definitely stay again and the village of Turrene nearby is definitely worth a visit."
"Staying locally so visited just for the restaurant. Excellent service, lovely hosts, local food, inventive menus. Good ambience with unusual artwork in the restaurant. Good knowledge of wines. Kindly helped the following day to find a hotel en route back home. "

3 et 5 Place Winston Churchill, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
"We stayed here for one night, breaking our journey from the Channel down south and enjoyed the experience. The hotel is situated on a pleasant tree lined street just five minutes walk from most of Brive's main sites..(its not a large town). The place has obviously had a recent makeover so there's a very modern feel to the interior. Whilst its fine for a short stay however, I'm not sure I'd want to stay too long as despite paying an extra 10 euros for a larger room it was still somewhat on the 'compact' side. Crucially though, the bed was comfy and the bathroom was clean and stylish with an excellent shower. There is a car park opposite the hotel and certainly when we were there the hotel had an arrangement by which it was free for hotel guests. As we arrived on a Sunday many of the restaurants in town were closed for dinner but the receptionist gave us a list of those which would be open and recommended the 'Les Viviers St Martin' (subject of a separate review) which was superb. Breakfast the following morning was very good with a great array of fruits, yoghurts, ham and cheese in addition to super croissants and pastries. We really enjoyed our stay at Le Collonges and thought it excellent value. Would certainly return if in Brive again."
"Great location in Brive center, near public farm market Saturdaay. Delicious simple breakfast at reasonable price. Comfortable bed. Hot room (no A/C), smoke, diesel fumes, and loud noise from the street, tiny desk, phone can't call front desk, ridiculous bathroom completely floods when you take a shower, staff says it's normal and hands you more towels to mop it up yourself! No room to put your stuff on the bathroom counter.Perfumed shampoo too strong, the single tiny soap they supply must be shuffled back forth between the sink and shower. Not a single shelf in the shower, the soap goes on the dirty floor. Only paid street parking. The bed was comfortable, but eon't expect to sleep. You must either have a hot room, or open the windows to really loud street noise and polluted air even from the 3rd floor. Worse, they only have the dreaded "uni-comforter", so you don't get a sheet. You must sleep uncovered, or with the thick comforter on and then sweat all night tossing and turning. The cleaning crew tidy up the room, but randomly take your soap and don't replace it, or leave you without toilet paper. I wanted to check out and run like hell after night #1, but was too busy to do so and then too apathetic, so I stuck it out, but would not stay here again."
"We stayed here while visiting friends. The rooms are small but very comfortable, there is air conditioning which was a boon in the heat! The rooms were very quiet, and the beds comfortable; the bathroom was spacious as well. Staff members were very polite and helpful - if you return to the hotel after midnight, there is a bell to ring and you are then let in (so there’s no curfew!). There is a simple buffet continental buffet breakfast provided. The location is superb, smack in the middle of this beautiful town and about 15 minutes away by foot from the station. Recommended. "

19 av. Général Pierre Pouyade, ZAC du Mazaud, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
"After a long trip from Toulon we reached Brive by 6pm. Roads were good and traffic light. Lovely countryside. Rather tired, but okay , we then spent an hour trying to find the hotel. In desperation we eventually visited the train station and asked for help. It turned out that the address on the official site was incomplete! With the revised address in the Sat Nav we eventually reached Ibis just after 7pm. The welcome was efficient, if a little brusque. The room clean but rather small. The evening meal in the nearby busy restaurant was nothing special. The buffet breakfast was adequate. Then on departure we raised the issue of the incomplete address. Apparently the hotel was aware of the problem - unbelievable. So, if you do visit make sure you put ‘ 3 Rue Armand Sourie’ in the SatNav. Maybe one day Ibis Management will listen to its junior staff. This was our first visit to an Ibis. On our journey south to the Med we used Campanile as usual. There was one next door - I expect their address was correct! So next stop Ibis Saumur. Will we find it? Here’s hoping."
"jThe Hotel staff were very welcoming - which was must appreciated on our arrival at midnight! The room was clean and quiet even with the main road outside. The breakfast was plentiful and a good variety. Check-in and out were speedy."
"On the positive side: good water flow, and the rooms are equipped with a bath. However, lighting in the bathroom insufficient and very "cold", reminding me of hotels in former east Germany. Also only 3 (identical) lights in the room. No restaurant, but there is a Courtepaille adjacent to the hotel. As a hotel guest you get 10% off the food. Poor internet connection (I had no problems in other Ibis Styles), streaming was permanently interrupted. Also, sound isolation could be better, you can almost understand what people say when they pass your room in the corridor."

22 Boulevard Anatole France, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
"The hotel is well situated in the center of town, near all the highlights and cafes, with a supermarket and tourist information center nearby. It's about a 15 minutes downhill walk from the train station. It has character, with a large fireplace and outdoor seating. Breakfast is adequate yet decent. Dinner is imaginative. The people working here were quite friendly. As for the room, the bathroom is of modern style, but the bedroom is somewhat shabby. My room was on the top floor, so it got quite hot and humid in July. The air conditioner is an old machine on the floor in the corner, very weak and ineffective. Fortunately, I was able to get a fan, but sleep was still highly uncomfortable and short. Other rooms might be better; inquire and beware."
"Good location a few minutes stroll to quaint old town. This place is very much in the French tradition...not surprisingly. The room was newly decorated and very clean with good WiFi, lots of space, modern bathroom etc but even though the decoration was clearly new it seemed drab. This is a personal thing and perhaps others might think differently. There is onsite parking but not very many spaces."
"I originally booked and paid for 2 nights in the sister hotel but without consultation got moved to this one. I was told it would be a superior room. It wasn't my idea of superior, more like shabby !! The plastic flooring, whilst I'm sure durable was uncomfortable to walk on and looked cheap. The shower over the bath would be suitable for people of limited height. Certainly not suitable fur anyone over 1 metre tall !! The paint peeling off the ceiling added to the joy of the bathroom. The young lady receptionist was helpful and courteous, the gentleman that checked us out was ignorant and rude. This was supposed to be a special weekend away and we originally booked Le Quercy. This was booked because of its sauna and fitness room. We were then told that we would have been the only guests so we were moved the the Truffe Noire. A very disappointing experience and extremely arrogant of the hotel. No offer of a refund to book elsewhere. "

Zone Artisanale Le Moulin Rouge, RN 89, Terrasson-Lavilledieu, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
"When driving along Cenac et St Julien main street till the property gate in this street you cannot imagine that since you passed the gate you reached to a paradise oasis. The external view of the buildings, the lake and the gardens are charming. I found some photos showing it and accordingly chose to reserve a room in this splendid property. Another consideration to choose it was the great location: It is easy and close to Domme, Roque Gageac, Beynac, Castelaund, Marqueyssac gardens, Sarlat, Monfort and more. It is near a big supermarket and a fuel station and several restaurants , bakery and Piza house. Everything which can make it an excellent base for relax and travel. Even the Saturday market is only 50 meters out of the property.I cannot describe my reserved room since the couple owning and running the property, Rosette and Misha, lost our reservation and provided an alternative solution in their property. Such a case never happened before to them and I still asked to stay in this heaven because all the above mentioned advantages. A great and important advantage was the cordial attitude and service of Rosette and Misha. The breakfast is just a celebration- it is very reach and it is served just beside the lake and the fish and garden view. I asked to include vegetables and Rosette responded by the requested salad, in addition to all the other food elements and drinks. The bread and croissant came from the nearby bakery/boulangerie and Rosette added two big cakes she cooked the same morning. It was the best breakfast I had in France during my 16 days trip this time. It compensated most of the initial disappointment for not being found as reserved and as a good decision to remain in the property by a different accommodation solution, still inside the property. I assume that this slight incident will not occur again, but even though I keep this place as a wonderful place to stay. Rosette and Misha are wonderful couple with direct warm attitude and with service orientation. I do not regret for choosing this property and meeting this charming couple and the heavenly property. We'll keep in mind this place as part of an enjoying dream. Therefore I recommend staying here with full heart and wish you a very pleasant stay. Now they have only 3 rooms to offer and you can contact the couple by email- atlan.haim@wanadoo.fr and remind them for the reservation confirmation again sufficient time in advance, to be sure."
"After a charming warm welcome we enjoyed our stay at the hotel's restaurant. The kitchen did it's job really good. We followed the staff's recommodations and had a nice evening with a wonderful red wine. At night it was completely quiet."

1, Place de Lattre de Tassigny, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
"We enjoyed this quaint place as we passed through the region. I wish we had stayed longer. Situated next to a small park, we had a comfortable and quiet suite, had a lovely well-prepared dinner and liked the breakfast variety of offerings - especially the fresh orange juice. The hotel was close to conveniences and shopping was a short walk away. Our hostess was gracious while providing welcome tips about local specialties."
"The team at the hotel were positive (if very disorganised) during a reservation mix-up with their systems and tried to be helpful. However, we were disappointed with several aspects of our stay: 1) The room (no. 10) in no way looked like any of the photos used to advertise the hotel! Those show contemporary, refreshed rooms... We had black damp in the shower, tiny shower cubicle/bath with low roof, damp spots on the ceiling, mattresses so hard that we did not sleep well, light fittings hanging off the walls. 2) Zero sound-proofing between rooms. Our neighbours liked to hike around their room in the middle of the night and the noise from the floorboards was enough to wake us and keep us awake. 3) The hotel is advertised with free parking which is one of the reasons we chose it. This is dishonest as they have more than 20 rooms and only 5 parking bays - guess how many were available when we arrived, only one hour after the earliest check-in time? Instead, we had to pay the €15 overnight charge at the public car park 150 metres away. The owners offered a free breakfast to compensate for the booking mix up but we were so tired after very little sleep that we simply left."
