"This hotel is in a remote but beautiful location, with its own little beach & nice grounds, Enjoyable coastal walk takes you into the harbour village of Portpatrick (wear sturdy footwear) Room very comfortable. Stay marred very slightly by the current regulations on the serving of alcohol - we couldn't have wine with our meal, but that of course is not the hotel's fault. A valiant effort had been made to match the food to a soft drink menu. Food absolutely exquisite. Agree with other reviewers that the portions at dinner are ever so slightly on the small side, but the quality of the cooking is as good as you'll find anywhere. Breakfast on the other hand was hearty! Will definitely return & highly recommend."
"A perfect weekend, at a beautiful wedding in a stunning location. My wife & I would like to thank David, his wife & all the staff at Knockinaam Lodge, we cannot fault anything & nothing was too much trouble, & we do mean nothing. The whole setting is idyllic & stunning, the food was amazing (& I am a fussy eater) & as for the costs of drinks, we found our bar bill very reasonable considering the amount we consumed over our 48 hour stay. Thankfully, a branded chain run establishment, it isn't, but then you get what you pay for & the hospitality of the owners & staff comes included. We will be back & we would 100% recommend to anyone, unless you are accustomed to chain run establishment with no character & heart."
"It might very well be a romantic Victorian lodge set in an idyllic cove with its own pebble beach surrounded by 30 acres of delightful grounds - but what they don’t tell you is their drink prices - £10.00 for a Gin & Tonic, £4.50 for a bog standard 330ml bottle of beer, I normally like a wee nip after my dinner, but on this occasion I’m glad I didn’t, I would possibly of keeled over as I perused their menu ! It made a good night a very expensive night and glad we curtailed our night at 11:00pm, absolutely no need to charging like this. Its a taxi to & from due to the location, it has all the country house fee, but like any older building, it shows it is age. Our lunch was a lunch to behold, a 5 course treat, well served & tasty, portions a bit small, maybe thats why the staff were constantly handing our bread rollls !"

"Frequent diners for lunch and dinner and the occasional supper, today we fancied having an early lunch and we chose the Mount Stewart. Albeit that we live relatively local and have done for 2 years almost, we have tried other restuarants, hotels and bars in Portpatrick and in Stranraer but never been here before and so glad we picked this hotel, well I picked it :). Due to the high winds there was adequate signage stating to use the rear door of the conservatory for entry and so we did. first impressions WOW!! Dramatic weather outside and lovely ambience inside and so a good start to a a delicious lunch. Several different areas to eat as you will see from the photos. Seated at a window seat and high on the hill the view was breathtaking. The beautifully flavoured soup of the day was two dishes of Potato, Celeriac and Leek homemade soup with amazing taste and just right for a cold day like today. It was creamy and thick and the peppery flavour from the Celeriac was a great choice. Served with crusted bloomer and butter. No need to add any more salt or pepper and THAT is a good sign that the chef Alan knows how to season well. Jack our waiter for the day very attentive ( but not too much so which is a good point for us) was so pleasant and efficient and professional for such a young man. It was great to have the choice of a Chardonnay as wine as we find it hard to get and normally offered Pinot Grigio which is fine; but not our preferred wine. Would have bought it by the bottle if both were drinking but not when one is driving. Jack brought the drinks and gave us time to choose and (although not busy given the weather) I suspect that even when they are busier they understand that people need time to choose? This is the interval to explain why I am waxing lyrica andl I didn't give it a five..a few small improvements could be made. Location fantastic Iron the menu as sorry it doesnt show well in the photos . Coffee Machine was waiting to be replaced or we would have finished the meal with an espresso and white coffee The plates for main course came cold and asked for the plates to be replaced hot and it was no trouble at all and was done no fuss. Main course for me my favourite Lamb Shank with mint and red wine Jus( I usually use redcurrant jelly) it was served on a bed of Chive Mashed potatoes. It was served with Chips but not necessary. It was succulent and falling off the bone as expected and the Jus was out of this world. Main Course for hubby had a 6oz Fillet Steak and hold the onion rings but had a beautifully cooked Portobello mushroom( not button mushrooms and they do have their place ) but the Portobello mushroom compliments the beefy flavour of the steak. Side dish was mixed which was carrot, sugarsnap peas and neep. The steak .....Jack asked how hubby wanted it cooked and as always BLUE is the answer( sometimes a hard cook). ....but not for ALAN he knows how to cook the quality meat they serve with care. For tho"
"Hotel had to close after our first night due to a Covid 19 outbreak. Had taken car to ensure everything was sanatised before that and felt safe. Hotel itself is well decorated and appointed. Only thing was our room only had an shower, a massive and multi head shower mind you. The shower itself could do with a wee shelf to place shower gel and shampoo etc. The bath mat was just paper, likely a hygiene measure in circumstances. When time came to close staff informed us, by then the only guests. The arrange a time for breakfast and didn’t skimp. Still has full choice from menu plus cereals and toast too. Filled us up and then some for journey home and tasted great. Best scrambled eggs I have had in a long time. They offered to let us stay on as booked while they quickly worked to cancel future bookings, waving booking fees and offering to honour vouchers as soon as they could. We decide as little would be open and staff needed to clean hotel and sort things for themselves it was time to go home. Hopefully can go back to finish stay another time."
"Booked for one night during the half term break. Arrived shortly before sunset so we had a quick scout around the quay side area of Portpatrick before proceeding up the ‘mount’. All the hotel staff were both friendly and helpful. Although we had booked a standard room, a free upgrade to a far more spacious room (Cameron) was gladly accepted. Front view of the sea and harbour. The new substantial double grazing kept the gales force wind noise to an absolute minimum. Sizeable wall TV. Large bathroom with shower. Minibar. Additional feature on the mid landing was a hot tub ~jacuzzi. Book in advance. Had the bar supper which was very tasty. Sky sports TV showing the Cricket ODI from SA until it was rained off. Then Golf from CA. Popped out after supper to the Crown pub just down the hill. Traditional old fashioned style, and busy for a Friday night, before returning for a night cap. Breakfast was in the dining room. Various cooked options available. Overall a very enjoyable visit. "

"Went for 2 nights mid September and have to give the hotel 100% on all aspects or maybe cut it to 98% if I was picky. Room was booked direct with hotel and we were in the top floor harbour facing and room was of decent size larger than expected, bathroom was also large. Check in went smooth even though the pub was busy and all Covid rules for then were very strictly adhered to. Good view over the harbour and very good meals and terrific atmosphere inside. Excellent staff and very attentive. You could have meals in the bar / or go through the back to the main dining area. Good breakfast and even though you could sit outside for meals or late drinks it was still respectfully quiet at night. This hotel was a lot more popular than the others and it is no wonder it gets booked up very quickly. I would love to come back here again for a Christmas or New Year shindig but suspect it would need boked about 3 years in advance with it being so popular. I will be back here again in the near future Also parking very easy just yards away"
"Thank you so much to the crown, we were a group of 11 ladies on a "quiet" scottish miserable Sunday funday for the end of a a hen do and we had the best day ever! Staff & visitors were so kind to our bride tribe and we got some free chips & sandwiches from -the boss- best atmosphere food smelled & tasted awesome and I would come all the way back to portpatrick just to visit the crown. Genuienelly the friendliest pub ever. Love love love it. Thank you to all of you from the Macgillvray hen xx p.s thanks to the bar staff for the patience with our drinks order... very appreciated xx"
"Popped in here after reading good reviews, and after returning from a wee cliff path walk we decided to have our dinner here. The Crown boasts a large selection of seafood dishes (amongst others) and a fine seafront location. The food was very good and the surroundings are comfortable. Dogs are welcome but must be yous must be seated in the bar area. We all enjoyed our dinner. There is an outdoor area with many picnic tables which overlooks the sea. This must be a great place to sit and have a refreshment on a beautiful day. Unfortunately for us, on our visit the weather was blowin' a hooly so we didn't get the chance."

"Myself and 3 family members had the pleasure of staying at Fernhill Hotel a couple of weeks ago. We had 3 rooms in total, all of which were lovely. Rooms were all spacious, clean and comfortable, with beautiful sea views. My mother in law had the disabled access room which was very spacious with a lovely wet room. The food was fantastic. Lots of choice at breakfast and hot, breakfast food was cooked freshly to order. Evening meals were delicious and very well presented. On the Saturday evening there was a Christmas party night on at the hotel. The hotel phoned us well in advance to explain this would be happening to make sure we were happy with that. Which was very courteous. It turned into a great evening. The party dinner menu was equally as nice as the other evening meals and the ceilidh band ( Life O’ Reilly ) were fabulous to sit and listen to and have a dance. The evening actually added to our enjoyment. Every member of staff was friendly, helpful and professional. We were given a complementary sherry on arrival, which was very welcome on a dark November afternoon. One of the great things about this hotel is that single occupancy of a room is charged at almost half the price of double occupancy. I think this is unfortunately quite rare, which is unfair in my opinion. So well done to this hotel group. Portpatrick is a lovely little place. We would highly recommend the Fernhill hotel to anyone visiting this pretty part of the country."
"We have had excellent stays at Fernhill in the past. However, we are just back from a very disappointing three night stay. The room was warm and spacious, with two armchairs and an outfoor balcony, though a bit dated. However all the staff in the dining room, though personable and chatty, seemed to be students, with no sign of managers and more experienced staff keeping a check on service. The food was dulla nd pedestrian with little flavour. I had a chicken terrine as a starter one night, it had been made in a loaftine lined with ham. However I got the end bit which comprised a small slice of ham with no terrine, and nothing to spread on the three oatcakes. After being told that a flat white coffee was available a black coffee arrived. The following night we were told that "Gregor can't get the coffee maching to work". The service was consistently slow and often not pro-active but only reacting to requests, dirty dishes were left on the table at breakfast. We were told that because of covid, there was a one-way system which involved leaving the hotle at one end by a fire escape and walking round the hotel outside and then into the bar and dining room reception area, however on doing this half and hour before our dinner reservation to have a drink in the barm the door was still locked, adn we had to retrace our steps back round outside the hotel to alert the receptionist to phone and remind staff to unlock the door to the dining room. When leaving the dining room after dinner one night we asked to make our breakfast reservation, which we had been told was necessary to ensure that people arrived at staggered times to facilitate social distancing, however a "new start" assured us that we could come at any time when breakfasr was served and clearly had had no initial training. Of more concern is our assumption, based on our experience, that the cleaning of the rooms between guest is of the same poor standard, with no supervision, which in with covid 19 still so prevalent, constitutes a significant publid health risk."
"I’ve been visiting the Fernhill Hotel since childhood and over the years I have seen it change hands a couple of times but the hotel remains as charming and as idyllic as always. The views over Portpatrick harbour and the surrounding areas cannot be beaten. The restaurant, service & cleanliness of this hotel far exceeds hotels of the same rating. If I did have a minor criticism then it would be that the size of the portions in the restaurant leave you wanting for more. But, having brought this to the attention of my waitress on the first night I was able to order additional side dishes on subsequent nights at no extra charge. Overall this is a superb hotel and as such I’d highly recommend it to anyone. "

"First impressions, it smelled damp and stairs are threadbare, I stayed Monday to Friday with my daughter who was staying in room doing college work. Whilst I visited one of my Branches she had zoom calls etc to do each day the 1st day our very old hair dryer caught fire ! The Porter came up and couldn’t access his tools so was unable to take it off the wall, so suggested we went for dinner and leave window open as my daughter’s asthma was being affected, as couldn’t change our room, second day , no WiFi, so daughter struggled to do her college work, from that night until we left the TV stopped working!! When we complained, the Porter came up twice, then told us there was nothing that could be done! As it must be the aerial on the roof , the tv still used an aerial in the back of TV . On 3rd day we asked for fresh towels and refreshments eg clean cups. We were told that due to COVID they couldn’t change our towels, but we insisted as they were damp for 3 days, so they did change them and gave us clean cups and 1 small bottle of water between us?? To last 3 days 🙄 we went to local supermarket and bought coffee ,milk etc ourselves in the end. On a positive the food was amazing, gym was good and bed comfortable, so would visit for a meal, but never stay again, the pool was freezing and after a long day at work you just want to relax, but with no WiFi, and no TV it made the evenings very long 😞 To top off our bad week of staying here our last breakfast before checking out , we ordered brown toast and got white, ordered green tea and got Earl grey ?? Whilst packing up I found someone else’s lipstick down the back of my bed side whilst looking for my glasses ( so much for COVID-19 deep clean!) Just topped it off for us 😳"
"Short overnight stay. Older hotel, but very grand and comfortable. Rooms are spacious, bit dated but work fine nonetheless. Very warm rooms though, and throughout the hotel. Can control the heat in the rooms, so would be advisable when you arrive, unless you like a lot of heat! Service was fine, allowed to check in a few hours early as we had arrived early which was appreciated. The evening meal was very nice. Not overpriced, and the quality good. Breakfast likewise, which was included in the price. The hotel has a gym and a pool which was a useful facility. Sauna and Jacuzzi there too, but not in use at the moment. Gym and pool operating on a booking system which worked fine for me. Hotel central to the main shopping area within Stranraer. All things considered, a decent stay."
"This was not the first time we have visited this hotel to play our club bonspiel - and will not be our last. The hotel staff are fantastic at making your stay as comfortable as possible. Considering the numbers they cater for in a short period of time the food is excellent and great value. Although there are areas that could be upgraded the place is immaculately clean and welcoming. Ice is really good for curling also. Overall a really excellent venue, thank you."

"We paid for 5 days/nights DBB basis. The public areas were clean and there was hand sanitiser at the entrance. The food was lovely. The main staff were very pleasant and efficient especially Penny! I have given this a rating of 3 because of the young staff team who displayed an interest in good customer service, within the realms of their own remit. The room was dated. There was an iron burn on the carpet which I'm told had been there nearly 8 years and no attempt to cover it. The bed was two single bases put together and two single mattresses zipped together to make a double - these had seen better days and inevitably caused us to roll into the middle where it was sunk! As a relatively old building the windows were not fully sealed and as such the wind blew through causing quite a draught - we had to place a rolled up towel on the frame to reduce this. There was no cleaning AT ALL of our room during a 5 day stay - we purchased our own bleach and borrowed the hoover to do it ourselves - this would be a concern for me at any time but even more so during COVID! There was a power cut one evening which of course couldn't be helped, and the young staff on site did offer everyone sandwiches as they couldn't provide dinner. We had NO power/heating/lighting for 4 hours! Nobody checked on us in our room to offer torches or candles etc. The emergency lighting in the corridor which should have kicked in during a power cut also failed. We notified the cleaning staff of this the next day. The staff seemed to lack any managerial guidance on this (and most other) evenings, just trying to do their best. On checking out we declined to raise these issues for that very reason, deciding to wait until we got home. When we did contact the hotel we got a response from someone called PAUL, very aptly named given his customer service is appalling! The young team could teach him quite a bit in this regard. Paul advised that (1) we had been informed there would be no cleaning upon check-in. We weren't - and even IF we had been this would not have been at all acceptable over a 5 day period. Whilst we appreciate the social distancing aspect, we spent time out of our room and indeed could have agreed to this to allow sufficient cleaning to take place. (2) as the power cut wasn't his fault (of course we agree with that) then he did not agree that we had "paid for 5 days DBB and did not receive this". He advised that as a "goodwill gesture" we could go back at a convenient time and have a "free" meal. We responded that this was neither free nor a goodwill gesture, given that that is in part what we had already paid for - after all the power cut was not our fault either! In addition, this would incur a 200+mile round trip! To date, Paul has ignored this. It seems acceptable for them to withhold payment for goods/service not received. If you are looking to support businesses during these difficult times and perhaps looking for a break in this area this type of service s"
"We stayed here ahead of an early morning ferry trip to Belfast. Unfortunately we arrived when it was dark so didn't get a chance to look around much. We received a warm welcome at check in and the lady advised that the restaurant was serving until 8pm so we had just made it. We stayed in room 4 which was a family suite with 2 huge windows overlooking the bay. The room was very clean and spacious with a king sized bed and 2 singles as well as 2 chairs next to a fire and TV. Bathroom looked brand new and the shower was great. Only disappointment with the room was the mattresses, you could feel the springs through them all. Dinner was lovely and the chips were amazing. The music from the bar downstairs was loud and we chose to sit in the conservatory to dull it slightly. I would suggest the volume could be turned down a bit as it was also noticeable from our room afterwards too. Overall a lovely stay and with a few tweaks would have given 5 stars"
"I stayed here last weekend . I had requested a sea view and was so pleased to get one and I also got a free room upgrade . The room was very comfortably furnished and the en suite very clean and modern. I ate dinner in the hotel and thought the food and service were very good . Good Covid measures in place with appropriate social distancing . I have stayed here before and noticed the bar area had been refurbished . Outside there were lots of tables with patio heaters for comfort . I enjoyed my stay and found all the staff very pleasant and helpful."
