Matinloc Island, El Nido, EL Nido, Mimaropa, Philippines
"This resort was very clean, and everyone was very friendly. However, I wasn’t treated as well as I should have been for the price I paid. I would recommend this resort if they changed a lot of things: - the WiFi (it sucks and it stops working after 5 minutes..you have to keep changing routers). It doesn’t matter if you’re on an island... if guests are paying top dollar for your rooms, then you need to be paying top dollar for things like WiFi. There were also only 6 or 7 TV channels btw... - they tried to charge guests for land transfers from the airport to the port (don’t be so cheap... guests pay a lot to stay there, so you should provide transport all the way if you’re going to advertise it) - guests should be able to book open tours, regardless of who else is joining. They asked me if I would like to book a tour (wildly overpriced I might add), and after 20 minutes of looking at their options and researching the places on my phone, I finally settled on one. I was willing to pay their ridiculous price, but it wasn’t until after I wasted 20 minutes and told them which tour I wanted that they told me there was only one option available for the next day. (Please check the price of your rooms per night... then explain why you think it’s acceptable to tell me I can’t go on that tour?) - the food was good, but not good enough to be charging what they do. And since there’s nowhere else to go on that section of the island, you’re forced to pay for their ridiculously expensive food (not including the service charge) - as I was checking out, I needed to pay for the food I ate during my stay. I presented my Chinese bank card (because I live and work in China), entered my pin code, and paid successfully. A few minutes afterwards, they asked to see the card again to check the name on it (because I’m not Chinese, and they think I stole it). Thank you for suggestion, or at least making feel like I’m a thief, along with the many other disappointments of my ridiculously overpriced stay. Besides that hiccup, the staff again was very polite and even greeted me at the dock with a shell necklace and a welcome drink, which was great. However, nice smiles and welcome drinks aren’t enough to justify the price. "
"The hotel environment is very good, quiet, the attitude of each service staff is very good, the breakfast is rich, the price of lunch and dinner is a bit more expensive than in El Nido, but the taste is very good, only Western and Filipino food. Free snorkeling and kayaking equipment are provided on the beach. My parents are here for three days. The waters below the hotel pier are perfect for free diving, and the film is also beautiful. The only disadvantage is that the hotel's spa massage level is generally 3 times more expensive than the town. It is not recommended to try"
"The breakfast is very good, I don't have a lot of things, but I can order the food for you to do. The taste is very good. The waiter is very hospitable and full of smiles. There are fewer guests on the island, just like your private island, private infinity pool, I really hope to stay a few more days. The only regret is that the coral around the island is not very good."

Outside El Nido Town Proper, Seven Commando Beach, Palawan, EL Nido, Mimaropa, Philippines
"Long overdue review for Vellago and its wonderful staff! I had prepared to propose to my girlfriend a couple months prior, and contacted the Vellago staff to check if that would be possible. I had booked the beach side romantic dinner for sunset and placed a small deposit months prior to hold the reservation. I was a bit nervous wiring money overseas, but can confirm that they are a legit resort with professional staff! Note we did not stay at the resort, only for the romantic dinner package. Getting to the resort on Seven Commando Islands is a small trek. About a 15 minute boat ride from shore and expect some choppy waters. The boatman was contracted by Vellago, and was on-time for our pick up and drop off. After arriving onto Vellago Resort, we were greeted by the staff and offered some refreshments while they were still setting up. They were a tad bit delayed in setting up and forgot about my flower arrangement in lieu of champagne, but their amazing service made up for it! Throughout my proposal, the staff was kind enough to take photos and videos for us on our GoPro and phone. The set up was amazing!!! Everything was perfect with how the dinner set up was arranged. We were lucky there were probably only 1-2 other people there at the same time, and it truly felt like a private experience. The staff was even kind enough to ask for any playlist or songs I'd like to hear during our dinner. The 3-course meal was quite yummy and staff was attentive throughout the whole dinner. As the waves started washing onto shore where our dinner was set up, they promptly had a crew of people start building a sand moat to block out the water from washing up. Amazing! We even returned the next day to Seven Commandos Island (part of our island hopping tour booked through a separate agency), and we were greeted warmly by the staff and given a tour of their honeymoon suites! Special shoutout to our host, Herwin, who made our experience an unforgettable one with his amazing service! :) I would definitely recommend their romantic dinner package for any special occasion you may want to have with your loved one. Many thanks again to all of the Vellago staff who made our marriage proposal a success and fairytale story to tell for years to come! With warmest regards, Willis & Amy"
"We cant recommend this place enough.. We chose to stay here for our honeymoon in March and it was everything we hoped and dreamed it would be. We were thoroughly spoilt by staff, the second we stepped foot off the boat, they make you feel like you are the only people at the resort. Every little detail you could possibly think of was taken care of, you wanted for nothing. We stayed in the beach villa, jaw droppingly beautiful. The villa had such a wow factor with the most breath taking views and stunning decor. It was the most perfect romantic spot. You are in for a treat when they serve you breakfast to your room. I’ve never seen anything like it. The staff are spectacular, so friendly and lovely. The owners are amazing people and they will look after you with whatever you need. The food is incredible too and the romantic dinner on the beach is a must. You leave feeling rejuvenated. We can’t recommend Vellago Resort enough. It really is a special place. "
"We had such an amazing time at Vellago! It’s rare that anything exceeds our expectations, but the friendly staff and unique accommodations made this trip a truly amazing adventure that we won’t forget! We’re grateful for the lighthearted conversations with the staff - Jeff, Raffy, Regine, Reynald, Herwin and Bong - and their willingness to accommodate any and all of our requests no matter how small. I’d highly recommend this resort if you’re looking to truly get away and unwind - you won’t be disappointed!"

Cudugnon Point, Sitio Vegan Brgy. bebeladan, EL Nido, Mimaropa, Philippines
"Located at Kundugan Point, an extension of El Nido that stretches into Biscuit Bay, and difficult to access by road, the Alternative Beach Cottages is reached via a 30-45 min boat ride from the El Nido harbor, giving this accommodation the feel of being on one of the remote and secluded islands in Bacuit bay. After researching accommodations and reading the positive reviews I decided to book this accommodation. My hope was that it would be similar to the luxury beach resorts in the area without the ridiculous price tag of the El Nido Resorts run by the Ayala group- a wealthy non-local family conglomerate from the mainland. First the bad points of this experience-the communication prior to arrival was exceptionally poor due to the lack of responsiveness to emails and calls from Expedia. After decades of world traveling and trip planning, I would put this among the very worse in this regard. Except for the auto response from the Expedia platform confirming the reservation, I was unable to get any response to my questions about tours which was important so that I could properly plan my trip. I sent messages using the Expedia platform, emailed them directly using the address on their website, and had Expedia call them mid-day several times with no response each time which led to worry about whether something was wrong at the resort and whether our reservation would be honored. It also led to problems coordinating with other properties because of our itinerary. I decided to take a leap of faith and hope for the best when I arrived in El Nido from Puerto Princesa. Fortunately, pick up was almost on time -just after 2pm at the El Nido bus terminal (one review said that pick up could be as much as 45 minutes late)- two guys showed up asking for us by our name. We then had to walk about 10 minutes with our backpacks to the harbor where the crew used small kayaks to ferry us to the boat anchored off shore, and there we waited another 45 min for a couple who eventually no showed. While waiting on the boat, the staff spoke among themselves in Tagalog and ignored us before we started the 30-40 min boat ride to the resort. Needless to say the beginning of our stay was off to a very bad start but we were relieved at least that we did not have to scramble for a last minute accommodation. Just before leaving the harbor, Erika the acting manager of the property boarded the boat. I learned that both the owner and Alex, the manager, responsible for guest relations and communications was on vacation. In my opinion, someone should have informed of this so that we were not kept in the dark as long as we were about our status with this property. Also, given that Alex did not responsibly handle this part of his job, the owner should seriously consider finding a new manager or re-train him given his sub-standard performance. By contrast, Erika was personable, she apologized on behalf of the organization and tried to make things right with the tours. "
"We stayed at the Alternative for 3 nights in October 2019. Our stay was the last stop in our honeymoon and right before we were heading back home - and boy what an incredible stay this has been! Right from the get go and as we were getting off the boat, Alex was waiting for us with a big smile. He showed us the place and our room. The place is beautiful - a short little beach strip with a restaurant, a bar, and a few cabins. It is secluded and serene. Peaceful yet beautiful. Really no words to describe how magical the place is. The room (the cabin) is simple yet had everything you need - bathroom and toilet, a bed and a fan. That’s pretty much it. But you won’t be there long because you are either at the beach or kayaking or taking a tour... they offer many activities for a very reasonable price and we took full advantage! Their tours are much better than those leaving El Nido - they are more professional and you get tons of personal attention. Plus they’re cheaper!! So all in all we had an amazing stay! To add the food was absolutely incredible! And my wife is a vegan to which the chef totally accommodated. We had our best meals in the Philippines in that little spot!! Romantic setting, amazing food, great activities, and peace and quiet on a private beach. What more do you need? Thank you Alex and the team for making this stay an unforgettable experience for us! We hope to come back in the future!"
"Alternative Beach Cottages are in a fantastic location on a small isolated beach across the ocean from El Nido. Although the setup faces east so you don’t get the sun set the Cottages are cute and spread along the hillside with seaside views. The restaurant has an magnificent view over the ocean and staff served a delicious buffet dinner each night consisting of fresh local cuisine to cater to all diets. Staff are pleasant and nice but not very attentive. They ran out of beers after our first round and did t attempt to restock the following couple of days despite making trips back to town. The tour arranged through them was a good day out and boat staff made the effort to try allow us to see everything we requested. "

Corong Corong El Nido National Highway, El Nido, EL Nido, Mimaropa, Philippines
"Both my husband and I were very excited to stay here as part of our first anniversary and before we got here we had a total mix up with our booking as it had been uploaded incorrectly on Hotels.com and the rate for the accommodation we had paid for was incorrectly set up (not really our problem) however a really helpful lady Michelle did look at booking us another smaller space at a discounted rate for the inconvenience: So on arriving at the villas we were politely checked in and given a mobile phone to use for booking any transport either for free rides up and down the hill (as it is very steep to the main road) this is a good service (or so you would seem) getting from reception to our Jonglo no.4 was very tiring. The road itself is at a very steep gradient and then 80 steps to the villa. Once you arrive the views are nothing short of spectacular I can not deny and is its saving grace as it is an outstanding view looking over El Nido. We were exhausted however from the walk up to the villa and it did put us off from using any of the facilities as the swimming pool which is lovely is at the bottom of the steps. We did have an arrival drink and the guy at the pool was very well mannered. We took advantage of the driver to take us to a nearby bar (Panorama) very good just after sunset and also booked him to take us to a restaurant which had been recommended to us (Tamboks) he was really great and friendly and had explained if we finished before 9.30pm he could collect us and we used the phone to boom this and all was fine (apart from the meal) we hiked back up the steps which certainly tired us out. The room was cool but was also inhabited by a number of insects which I removed and is kinda expected in this type of location. But the next morning I had been half eaten alive by bugs which is just something which can happen. On our second day tho we had a couple of issues not of the hotels making and again Michelle was amazing at trying to sorting them out again. We returned from our trip and hiked back up the steps to get changed and back o it for sunset at a local bar. To then when coming back the phone had no credit so we could t call the driver or reception. There was no way we physically could walk up the hill so we had to convince a tricicle driver to bring us up the hill and of course paid. I did explain to Michelle there had been this problem and ok 20 mins later it was loaded with some credit but it’s all a bit too late by then. On arriving in the room we thought a nice chilled early night watching tv maybe a movie as you early for our flight. To find that the TV satalite channels didn’t work apart from Nickelodeon! So it’s been a bit of a let down. Other issues are the internet as maybe this villa is a little far away from the main reception and the signal strength is limited and cuts off quite easily. It’s an expensive place to stay even with a big discount and I don’t know what extras will be added to our bill tomorrow though I w"
"Absolutely loved this place and would stay again/recommend it to friends. The rooms were spacious, simple and clean. Equipped with a decent size kitchen although we only used the fridge to store drinks. The views from our studio (from the bed, balcony and outdoor bathtub and shower) and the dining/pool area were incredible. There was no need to go to sunset bars when we could have drinks on our balcony. It was a highlight of our trip to the Philippines. It is a little walk from the main road, and a steep one at that, but this didn’t put me off the place. To put it into context my boyfriend has recently had heart surgery and whilst he had to pause a few times when we walked from the road to our studio he was able to manage it. In any case they have a car which can come and take you up/down the hill. They mentioned they were considering giving guests staying at higher residences their own transportation - if they’re able to manage it golf carts would work well. Bar did good drinks. Food from the restaurant was a little hit and miss. If we stayed again we probably wouldn’t eat there. Food service was also very slow...took over an hour one morning to get brekkie (and most other days c45 mins) so bear that in mind if you need to leave for a tour/flight. Could have been because they were a bit short staffed as we stayed over NYE. All in all a fantastic stay. Michelle and her colleagues were super helpful and friendly. Wish we could have stayed longer."
"Karuna is Fantastic! Nice, clean and big room with super terrace. We lived in a "Joglo 2" with Javanese design. The Joglo was made from teakwood and stone, all the elements come from Indonesia. Built up along a hillside - so people with any kind og walking problems should not choose this hotel. There is a fridge, filtered water and a small kitchen. Te and coffee is for free in the room, with Wi-Fi and air condition. Exciting bath and toilette facilities.A bathtub on the side of the terrace with a view. Visit the restaurant/bar with infinity pool. Rodge in the bar is super with information, answering questions and serves delicious drinks. This er were you will find the most beautiful view of water, islands, smal harbour and sunset. Friendly and very helpful staff."

Sitio Caalan, EL Nido, Mimaropa, Philippines
"This little pearl of a hotel is situated in a "hidden" place at the Caalan Beach in El Nido. Only way in is by feet or scooter/tricycle. The resort has a very appealing atmosphere. Nice and quiet and no rush, but still fast and reliable service. The staff at Bougainvilla Cottages deserves only the best recommendation. They picked us up at the Lio Airport and actually drove us and picked us up as well in the town, when we needed it. For free! Great service. We had to travel very early and was offered travel-sandwiches and a "safe travel"-salut. Rooms af nice and cozy and you have a little table at your "terrasse". You can customize your breakfast. Omelets, cereals, pancakes and fruits."
"We stayed here for 4 nights. We paid £95 a night. That's a lot in the Philippines. Everywhere else in the Philippines that got us a lot for our money (even Manila). At Bougainvilla you get a pretty small room. Only space to really unpack one suitcase. The other had to go on the floor and you need to edge your way around the bed. The balcony area is pretty small and although they do provide a table and 2 chairs there's not much room. This is your 'desk' by the way. As a view you either get the small pool or the restaurant area. The bathroom is fine. The water really smells bad and is brown a lot. Both my partner and I got very sick here from the water in the shower. By sick I mean 2 nights of severe vomiting. It wasn't the food as I ate none but their breakfast that day. Staff aren't very friendly at all. A couple do a reasonable job. They need A LOT more training. Forget any kind of happy service. The room cleaners are the happiest. The food in the restaurant is the only positive thing I can really say. It's presented well and tastes good for the most part. It's an expensive place that if I paid half the price it might just be acceptable. "
"When our airport transfer van stopped and put us on a tuk tuk to access the bumpy beach road, we weren't sure what to expect, but bougainvillea cottages were perfect for what we wanted. Tuk tuk was always around to take you to town or pick you up. Staff extremely helpful and friendly, always up for a chat. Small rustic rooms but we didn't spend much time in rooms. Great breakfast and cute bar. We enjoyed el nido very much, the beaches and the boat trips and the good restaurants in town. "
