Wanosato is located next to a picturesque rock strewn river surrounded by old pine trees. The setting is quiet and relaxing with just the sound of flowing water. If you’re planning to explore Takayama you will need transportation for the short drive there. The well established ryokan has several baths available and they are all enjoyable. Our room was spacious and clean with good AC and a small refrigerator. There is a charge for non alcoholic drinks from the refrigerator which is different from other ryokans on our trip. Meals were excellent without fail and the service level is very good. Staff are friendly and accommodating. Shuttle service to and from the train station. Very pleasant stay.

I have been thinking if I should write this review but I decided to do so in order to warn others of the experience we had received during our 2 nights stay. This was a very unpleasant experience. We travel very frequently and stayed in many hotels/accommodations around the world including Japan several times in our lives. We know what is basic customer service and we are not the demanding kind of guests. This place is very unlike the typical Japanese hospitality and culture. To be fair, the lady who checked us in on the first day was quite polite, but we felt somewhat strange when the lady who showed us our room spoke to us in a rather unfriendly way. I understand that English may not be their first language but when she was introducing us to the features of the room, she was expressionless and spoke like a unwilling robot. Next was the horror that made us very uncomfortable during our 2 nights stay. The room was very dirty and filthy! There were many spider webs in the corners of the room, windows glass and doors were dusty, had many stain/ and water marks, there was also used tissue in the toilet bowl and even the closet that stored our mattress and pillows had dust and debris. Though our room came with 2 onsens, they were filled with a lot of mold and other ‘stuff’ floating in them. The pillows was also very hard. There the bathroom floors and walls were more mold. Sorry we did not take much photos of what was mentioned as we felt disgusted enough. We did not mention this to the staff as we felt that they did not even have the decency to check on the basics before we checked in. The occupancy was only around 30%. The only saving grace of this place was the food. It was very well prepared and presented. The next day, we requested to have breakfast at 0730 but decided to go down earlier at 0720 as we woke up early and was feeling hungry. When we got to the first floor, I was the first to smile and said Good Morning to the guy grilling fish near the reception. Not a word of pleasantries and started shouting to us, ‘Breakfast not ready, go go go!!’ and gestured to chase us away from the area. We were so shocked and wondered what we have done. Never have we asked or requested for anything or said anything till this far since the first day of check in. Same for the other staff, we did not feel welcomed and was not treated with basic customer service. The only person who was friendly and had some basic manners and courtesy was the more matured lady who served us during breakfast. She was well mannered, polite anx friendly. This place felt a little creepy also. We will definitely not return and will not recommend this place at all to anyone. Definitely not worth the money and experience. Do not be fooled by their photos and website.

We were 4 to, this traditional Japanese hotel, in a single room with tatami and sleeping on the ground. Typical Japanese breakfast and dinner equals two days. We take advantage of,go to the onsen. It is inexcellent location6, excellent and good quality food treatment. Very good experience. We offer you free transport service to the train or bus station. There is a store at the first floor with typical products. You must leave the shoes at the,enter the hotel and go with shoes inside that give you them

It was scheduled to come in early July, but the road was stopped by heavy rain and there was a cancellation from choza, but it was possible to come in September. I went from Takayama to R158, but there was a landslide in 々 July and there were several one-way passages, but I was able to arrive in the evening. There is a private passage (approach) from the parking lot to the entrance of the inn, and the expectation of the long seat is swelled (≧∀≦) When you enter the entrance, there is a front cherry blossom lobby, and there is a large Irori beside the lobby, and the romantic of the long seat is It's like drifting. This time, I was in a room with a 10 chapter ＋ hibachi, but the room with a hibachi was not large and I didn't have to take it (^^;) because it was guided to the room and it was a corona ridge, the futon was laid from the beginning, and the room of 10 chapters felt narrow I was in the hot spring before dinner, cross the road in front of the inn to ”kawara no Yu” and walk through the green tree 々 path, there is a hot spring hut and arrives at ”kawara no Yu”! This is a semi open-air bath (the hot water of the beauty of the source hanging) You can enter slowly while listening to the sound of the river. The large bath in the inner bath is made of high ceilings and is slowly immersed in the hot springs. Also, the open-air bath was large and the leaves of the tree 々 fell, and I was able to take a bath here, but when I went in the morning, the open-air bath did not seem to be very beautiful 〜 (^ ◇ ^;) Dinner is a restaurant with a fireplace ‼︎ charcoal is burned in the fireplace You can bake local seasoned oil, salted cherry blossoms, and gohei Mochi with charcoal fire slowly. There are only local delicious foods such as preceding, appetizer, sashimi of HIDA mass, boiled bowl, iron plate grilling of HIDA beef, tempura of mountain vegetables, and rice of HIDA Koshihikari, and local sake is also available. I also enjoyed the bone sake of rock fish (≧∇≦) Breakfast is also delicious and enjoyable, such as local vegetables, mountain vegetables, and so on. The room was also dedicated to each room and I was able to eat without worrying about other guests. This time, I was sometimes called corona cherry blossoms, but I was able to spend with great satisfaction (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵) I went home from R471 (Okuhida Yu no Hana Kaido Road) along the Takahara River on another route from the way I came back! This was wider and there were few construction sites and I was able to return to Takayama easily.

Hodakaso Yamano Hotel Old and well maintained hotel tucked in the mountains. Exudes an old world charm where you forget the hustle and bustle of urban life. Welcoming service upon arrival where the concierge comes running to unload your luggages. The room was basically comfortable with no frills. The attraction of this hotel was in the many pockets of activity to enthuse with. There was a cosy foot bath tucked in one corner on your way to the elevator. The highlight was a lovely all natural outdoor onsen 5 min walk from the hotel - owned by the hotel - opens from 5 am to 11 pm. The only access to the outdoor onsen was to take a 1-min slope lift down the steep slope. They were changing rooms but no bathing facilities at this outdoor onsen. The experience here was truly magical, soaking in the Hotspring, surrounded by natural forest and mountains, while watching the sunset. The onsen bath within the hotel was small and simple. The food served for dinner was acceptable. Breakfast was decent too. On the whole, the experience was quite magical.

It is far away from Takayama Station, but there are direct buses that take about one hour and fifteen minutes. This hotel is clean and tidy, with two private baths, pure Japanese style, and a large room. When you sleep at night, you feel like you are at the murder scene in Detective Conan. There is also a natural park around, which is very beautiful. It is very dark at night, so it is not suitable to go out and wander around. It is a suitable place for a one or two day trip.

This was our first time at a ryokan and it’s going to set the bar really high. As another reviewer noted, Oyado Koto no Yume embodies the best of hospitality. Right upon arrival, our hosts were warm and helpful. Would also note that the lady whom I think is the owner speaks very good English if necessary. I’ve noticed that the staff will also speak basic Japanese slowly if it’s clear that you’re learning the language and are struggling to speak it but trying—I really appreciated that :) You’re asked to take your shoes off upon entry, which being Asian, I love. I think the host also wiped down the wheels of our suitcases. This little place just goes beyond and above with all the nice things they offer additionally (price inclusive) to ensure you have a lovely stay. There’s a yukata service, where they let you choose a yukata to wear inside or outside, as well as plush coats hanging in the lobby area that you can borrow if it’s cold outside. They have aromatherapy burners with a variety of scents that you can choose, just ask the front desk for an aroma pot. The room itself was pristine and immediately instilled in us a sense of calm. There are little snacks waiting on the table, a fridge that’s actually a fridge and not a minibar so can actually be used by the guest, a full set of cups and plates along with a kettle and coffee pod machine, and the host will explain that you get sleep yukatas and specific face towels as well. If you have the Japanese-style room, the staff will make up your futon while you’re out. They left a sweet note on ours and also a put a pitcher of ice water on the table. It was these little touches that made our stay really pleasant and memorable. Would also mention that if you’re there longer, or it’s raining, there’s a small manga library downstairs and it looks like you can also do origami, which will get proudly displayed in a glass cabinet. There’s also a bathhouse and you can reserve a private one for a small fee. Staying at Oyado Koto no Yume felt like being a welcome guest at home. After we checked out, we were given a set of Takayama postcards as a gift. Would highly recommend you stay here if visiting the charming town of Takayama, and experience the best of Japanese hospitality. I can’t wait to go back. ありがとうございました~

Takayama was easily the best place we visited during our entire visit to Japan. We stayed 2 nights in a Japanese style room with a private outdoor bath and dinner and breakfast. The room was absolutely beautiful - so spacious, clean, and luxurious, with all the amenities we could have needed. The outdoor bath was heavenly, and the view from the balcony was the icing on the cake. It was lovely to come back from dinner and have our futons laid out for us. If you’re looking for a truly traditional Japanese dining experience then look no further. We had a private dining booth, and the food was served in small courses. The food itself was very different to what we’re used to, and it was quite intimidating! But the staff did a good job at explaining what everything was and how to eat it. We were concerned that we might have communication issues since Hoshokaku is away from the big cities, and we weren’t sure how prominent English would be here. But the staff spoke the clearest English of any other accommodation we stayed at. They were so attentive all the time that we almost felt like royalty. We’re already planning to stay again when we next visit Japan! One last thing I’d like to mention is to address concerns in previous reviews about smoking in the building. I think this must be something which has completely changed; we didn’t get a whiff of smoke anywhere in the building. The entire place was immaculate and honestly a joy to wander around in.
