Reviews From Real Travelers
We were disappointed in our stay. When we booked, we specifically selected ”water view” and the room was advertised as having 2 ”queen” beds. Although perhaps both were technically true, we certainly felt ripped off. The view we had was actually into the atrium where you could technically see the water through a window all the way across the atrium - a couple hundred feet away. The beds may have been bigger than full but were at least 6” less than a typical 60” wide queen. Since we paid extra for the view we didn't feel it was worth the price. The room out of that context was nice, but it had no complementary bottled water or coffee and at checkout we were told that was due to Covid somehow which made no sense to us. The walls were also pretty thin and it felt like someone was flushing the toiled right next to me while I was in bed. Overall it was clean and the staff was friendly but it was not what we expected for $700/night.

Great experience, some rooms can accommodate an extra bed, but ask the hotel in advance. The location is very good, although you can't see the sea directly, but in the harbor, a few steps is a street of many shops. Convenience. excellent service.

We've been coming to the Hotel Viking for the Audrain Concours for the last year. We can't wait to come back next Fall. We love everything about the hotel - the hotel itself, the restaurant, the rooms but most of all we LOVE the staff. From beginning to end our experiences have been wonderful and sooo much fun!! The front desk staff, the valets, the wait staff and bartenders and the bellmen are welcoming and friendly. We have breakfast and afternoon and night-time coffee, dessert and drinks at the restaurant and lobby bar. Hyechong, Sammy, Laura, Matthew and Kelsy took such good care of us all weekend, as did the front staff and valet staff. The hotel is beautiful and it's seriously the best location in town. We park the care and walk everywhere and take the trolley too. We spend 4 nights each fall with you and it's one of the best trips we take. The Hotel Viking cares about their guests and wants to ensure they have the best experience. They check in with you as you come and go and they cannot do enough for you! We highly recommend the Hotel Viking!!

For a beautiful looking historic hotel from outside, this is definitely a case of looks can be deceiving. From the second we checked in it was clear there was zero effort to hospitality at this establishment. There was a large wedding party there this same weekend which seemed to pull all their attention to. We weren’t even explained the amenities of the hotel, I was tossed a piece of paper and was told I could explore on my own. I get to my room after entering a dark, dingy hallway desperately in need of a paint job to find a fine standard room. However, we walked into the bathroom area and found water all over the floor from the piping. Immediately called the front desk and had to wait over 45 mins for anyone to show up to assist. I front everyone at the front desk to be very uninterested in assisting any simple request or questions we had regarding the area. I will say the gentleman that did show up was very polite and helpful. There were no amenities, the welcome drink listed on their website did not happen and our group of 4 was provided with one roll of sanity paper for a several nice stay upon which I called 3 times to have replaced as no one ever offered us housekeeping or fresh towels. The best were worse than sleeping on a camping pad as every time you moved their creaked and we’re definitely not comfortable. The bathroom was extremely old and outdated. Again, extremely disappointed in all things with our stay at this hotel. I would say the only positives were the location and well kept manner of the outside of the building. Do yourself a favor, don’t waste your money here and stay at another establishment in town. I give it 2.5 stars at best.

I wish there was a rating between poor and average. I thought I'd give this hotel a try especially from their Instagram photos only to be disappointed with our very outdated and dusty room . It's not worth the overpriced rate of $360 (w AAA discount) for the off season . We stayed in a Narraganset King Water view w balcony room which was far away from the lobby in the Captains Quarters convention hall area. I even spoke to a manager as I was leaving how disappointed we were and how they need to definitely renovate their bathrooms for safety. The tub has old glass sliding doors with an extra step that can be difficult climbing out of . My husband slipped and had nothing to hold on to but the towel rack that looked like it was about to break off . We were also surprised to find over $35 in taxes (hotel and room tax plus a $25 resort fee which was not disclosed when I booked over the phone, but stated it was in the confirmation email. Maybe it feels like a resort in the summer, but not in March. fyi, they will also put a $125.00 hold on your credit card for any add;l pending charges . There is a safe in the closet and a small fridge, but hard to find hidden in one of the nightstands. The walk to down town was about 15 minutes and there's a small park before the bridge to Goat Island. Not much walking to be had on Goat Island . NO info was given for parking at the hotel in advance, and don't fall for the crazy expensive overnight valet prices $35 . There's self parking, but just not close to the lobby. The lobby looks nice and modern and we did not visit the restaurant, so we can't rate that , but this hotel needs room improvements and we will most likely not return . Do your research and read the reviews before booking . Honestly , there's so many better hotels in Newport for that rate.

I went to Gurney's when it was the Doubletree Hotel several decades ago. Well, imagine my surprise when I arrived last week to the same carpet and bathrooms. (WHAT?!) The visit was fine. Just fine. Gurney's is like a teenager who doesn't fully feel s/he knows her/himself and is trying on many hats. It advertises that it's a getaway for couples, families, and is a pet-friendly hotel. The toxic cocktail of dogs, oh so many dogs and young children and then adults who left their children, sigh, it just does not work. The DJ at the lobby was cute, but music permeated through the ceiling and walls and we were on the third floor. For hours and hours. Those dogs were barky from dusk until dawn, and those cute children's voices were heard and seen for days. (Can they all room in one area of the hotel? We were not the only ones who were affected.) It's sad; the view is spectacular, the skating is indulgent, Maureen at the restaurant? Top notch. But, Dear Gurney's, No one wants to pay to experience that twice.

The hotel exterior is beautiful. I was able to handle check-in and check-out very well. The location is pretty good.
