11 Quai Du Fret, Crozon, Brittany, France
"The Hostellerie de la Mer is a hotel and restaurant in the village of Le Fret, on the west coast of Brittany. For the second year in a row, we chose to have our anniversary meal in this restaurant, and, as with last year’s meal, it was an excellent choice. We arrived early and were immediately shown to a table in the restaurant. It was busy. Most tables were being used and the staff danced around us, bringing water, an assortment of drinks and plates of food to, it seemed to me, everybody but us. My tongue was hanging our for a drink by the time they noticed us, but all was forgiven from then on, because the service was excellent. One server offered us drinks, and we ordered two Kirs. She also brought a bottle of sparkling water which I guzzled befoe the Kirs arrived. Another server took our food order. Someone else brought a tray of amuse-bouches, and some bread rolls. The wine server took our order for wine. She brought it, opened it efficently and left it there to serve some other people. We looked at each other, wondering were we allowed taste it ourselves, but while we wondered, she returned, having, we supposed, let the wine get its breath back. My wife tasted the wine –a St Nicolas de Bourgueil 2016 - and all was good. It should be noted that although we waited ten minutes at the beginning –with our tongues hanging out – we had arrived ten minutes early, so they cannot be blamed for this. The food was excellent. We both had soup to start. My wife’s main course was a pavé of tuna. It was well cooked and there was a delicious mousse of celery with it. I had a duo of pork with a gratin of potato which was a little dry, but apart from that, I could not fault the cooking or the chef. After the dessert course –she had chocolate, I had cheese – the same chef emerged from the kitchen and went from table to table, introducing himself and listening to comments about his work. I have no idea how he responds to negative criticism, but he was full of gallic charm at our table. The bill for this meal, including all drinks, was 95 euro. Our return journey by taxi to our campsite was 90 euro, so total cost was 185 euro for the evening, but since it was our anniversary, and since the meal was so delicious, we were happy to pay. An overnight stay at the hotel would have cost roughly the same as the taxi. But the comfort of the taxi, and the ability to view the scenery without having to concentrate on driving made the taxi very good value. And the meal lives on in my memory, as one of the best."
"Stayed for 6 days in a suite at the front of hotel, with lovely views over the bay and a beautifully designed and appointed bathroom. The highlight was the magnificent restaurant, with its large windows overlooking the bay, serving beautifully presented innovative dishes at reasonable prices. Careful consideration had been given to every aspect of the hotel so that everything was delivered to a high standard of quality."
"All the reviews praise this hotel for the quality of its food. We didn't have the opportunity to eat there so our entire experience is based on the hotel activity only. The room we were in was small and outdated. It smelled of dust and humidity. The carpet has seen better days. Our room was next to the stairs so we heard people coming and going. We were quite disappointed and won't visit again."
