Recommended Length of Stay: 1-2 Hours

Location: Lutherinkatu 3, 00100 Helsinki

The Rock Church, also known as Tempelio Kio Church, is located in the Tempeli Rock Square in the center of Helsinki. It was carefully designed by the architects Sumarinin brothers. It is a church built in the rock in the world and one of the unmissable attractions in Helsinki . Historical Background The Rock Church was built in February 1969. In fact, the plan to build a church here existed as early as 1930, but it was forced to run aground due to the outbreak of World War II. After the war, the current plan was chosen through public offering. People who come here will be amazed by this creative masterpiece, it is hard to imagine how a solid rock can be built into a church inside. The beauty of architecture When you stand outside the church, what you see is a huge rock, you can't see the spire and bell tower that the general church has, you can't even notice the church, there is only a light blue copper with a diameter of more than 20 meters. The circular dome is exposed on top of the rock. This is because the church was built in a huge rock, the rock was dug up and a glass roof was built above it to achieve natural lighting, and the outer wall of the church is the rock itself. The entrance of the church is designed as a tunnel, and the inner wall is still the original rock. The whole church is like a landing flying saucer, which is very peculiar. The roof adopts a dome design, supported by a hundred radial beams and columns, and is inlaid with transparent glass. With natural lighting, you will not feel like you are inside the rock at all. With a capacity of 940 people, the Rock Chapel holds services on Sunday mornings and is also an ideal venue for weddings. In addition, under the echo of the rock wall, the church has very good acoustics, and concerts are often held here.

Reviews from Real Guests:

Trip.com User: To think they begun construction in the early 1800's would beg belief. It's design is very pleasant for Russian eyes as it was designed and built specifically for them. It's possible to relax here and watch everyone go about their business quite happily with the odd tram passing by every so often making it that much more atmospheric. It was the highlight of my 1 night stay in Helsinki just to reflect back on my travells and ponder life without disturbance. Experience the mesmeric Helsinki Cathedral whenever you pass through Finland, you wont be disappointed.

WB2021: I really like Senate Square. It's arguably the most iconic place in Helsinki and it's a lovely square that I never get tired of visiting. The square does host different events, like a Christmas market during the winter season. The cathedral at the top is opened, but I think the exterior is more stunning than it's interior. The steps leading to the cathedral is also a great place to chill and relax. Head on over if you're in the city.
