Day 1 | Morning

Borobudur Temple

Opening Hours: Open from 6:00am-5:00pm

Ticket Price: 50,000 IDR

Recommended Length of Stay: 3-5 Hours

Location: Jl. Badrawati, Borobudur, Magelang, Central Java

Borobudur is located about 40 kilometers northwest of Yogyakarta. It is the largest Buddhist architectural complex in the world and is listed as a world cultural heritage. Borobudur means "a pagoda on a hill", but there is no written record of who built it and it is very mysterious. When you come to the Borobudur Stupa, you will definitely be shocked by it. This big Buddhist pagoda is built with local volcanic rock. The tower is 10 layers and consists of 6 huge square platforms, 3 circular platforms and the middle dome. The base is more than 100 meters long and the total height is more than 40 meters. It is quite majestic . There are more than 2,600 reliefs and more than 500 Buddha statues on the pagoda. Climbing up the steps can take a closer look. The stone walls of the corridors on each floor are full of lifelike reliefs, with delicate and exquisite carvings and various patterns. Some depict Buddhist stories, and some vividly reflect the daily life of the people and various livestock, flowers, birds, fish and insects. The Buddha statues, large and small, have different expressions and postures, which are enough to look at for a long time. Climbing to the top, you can see the pointed dome in the middle, which is surrounded by more than 70 Buddha statues sitting in the hollowed-out stupa. The scene is very awe-inspiring. You can see the Buddha statues inside through the hollowed out stupa, and there are also a few Buddha statues that are half exposed, taller than people, and particularly eye-catching. When the weather is fine, standing at the top of the pagoda can overlook Mount Merapi, and these sitting Buddha statues seem to be staring into the distance just like you, which is very artistic. Borobudur is also a good place to watch the sunrise. Many people make a special trip in the early morning when it is quiet, waiting for the sun to rise and the sun to shine on the pagodas and Buddha statues.

Reviews from Real Guests:

liazl: This temple has been well preserved, especially the numbers of carvings on it. It is a pleasing symmetrical shape and stands out nicely against the jungle around. Whilst we were there, there were lots of groups of schoolchildren and clearly this temple is rated by the locals, not just tourists. We were asked to have our photos taken several times by very well behaved and charming children. The temple is quite steep to climb so you need to take care on the steps. I took a walking stick with me. It is also much hotter on the temple as the black volcanic stone gets hotter than the land around. It was around 43 degrees on the top of the temple and I got heatstroke despite wearing a hat, having lots of water, and wearing loose clothing, so beware if you're not good in hot temperatures.

Niky85: Located on the island of Java, the magnificent Borobudur temple is the world's biggest Buddhist monument you must visit at least once in your lifetime. The area is surrounded by beautiful scenery of Central Java’s nature that you can only find there. The temple sits majestically on a hilltop overlooking lush green fields and distant hills. Built between AD 780 and 840 during the reign of Syailendra dynasty, the temple's design in Gupta architecture reflects India's influence on the region

Day 1 | Afternoon

Now we come to another great highlight in the city: Prambanan.

Prambanan

Opening Hours: Open from 6:00am-6:00pm

Ticket Price: 362500 IDR

Recommended Length of Stay: 2-3 Hours

Prambanan is a very magnificent Hindu temple in Indonesia. It has been damaged by many volcanoes and earthquakes. There are more than 50 temple ruins. Prambanan was built in the 8th to 10th centuries AD, about the same era as Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and has many similarities in architectural form and sculptural themes. The temple has three-story courtyards. Most of the buildings on the outer two floors are in ruins. Only the inner layer preserves several temples. The three magnificent main temples are dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu, and the other three small temples are respectively. Enshrined in their mounts divine bull, divine goose and condor. Like Borobudur, Prambanan Temple is also built of volcanic rock, and the walls are covered with exquisite reliefs, but its content is mostly based on the Indian epic "Ramayana". Compared with Angkor Wat, although the same story is told, the artistic style and characters are quite different.

Reviews from Real Guests:

liazl: More accessible than Borobudur for those staying in the city, we were awed by the loving effort to restore the temples and their ornate carvings. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and climbing lots of steep steps. The grounds are beautiful and good for walking. Remember to bring your shades or umbrella, and to slap on suntan lotion. You get a photo of yourself on your ticket as a keepsake as well as a welcome drink. We hired a local English speaking tour guide at the premises for 50K rupiah. He was entertaining and gave interesting insights, though not quite accurate in his account of historical events in this region. You will feel transported back to some Jumanji-ish land of ruins nestled among jungles to imagine how Prambanan was when it was discovered a few decades ago before it was rebuilt (if my guide was telling the truth). The brochures told the legend behind why the temples were built. You might feel indignant though when looking at how society then discriminated how and where people worship based on social class. But history helps us appreciate the journeys we have taken, toward a future that is more hopeful.

novita magdalena: On the 14th day of my tour around Java with the Java Private Tour, I got the first time to visit this UNESCO world heritage historical site, this place is one of the wishlist that I submitted to the Java Private Tour to visit in this series of tours around my Java in 2021. I admit that this ancient Javanese temple is indeed very magnificent, when compared to other temples in Southeast Asia, during the two hours I was in this place it felt like the time was not enough, because this place is very spacious. The place is very well maintained, and clean. In addition, the guide from the temple management is very clear in terms of telling the history of the temple and can take me back to the past, to the historical period when this temple was first built to its current condition. Thank you Indonesia, there are many things I can learn from this beautiful country, thank you tripadvisor for recommending the Java Private Tour, and thank you Java Private Tour for making my travel plans that I have compiled over the past year become real and realized.

The Water Palace is located in the southwest of the Sultan's Palace in Yogyakarta. It is a complex of canals, ponds and palaces. It used to be the palace's luxury entertainment park, swimming pools and waterways for the Sultan and his entourage to travel. This elaborate retreat was built between 1758 and 1765 by a Portuguese architect. Most of what you see today are the relics of the past, and the landscape bathing pool that is more representative of the water palace was rebuilt later.

Reviews from Real Guests:

Si cantik: Taman Sari is one of the tourist attractions in Yogyakarta that is interesting to visit. This place also has historic and artistic buildings that are suitable for photo objects. Its location, which is not far from Zero Point Yogyakarta, is also a tourist destination that is in great demand by local and foreign tourists. Taman Sari as one of the historical relics of the pride of the Yogyakarta palace, there is a unique building that has a strong ancient feel, complete with bathing pools, water canals, suspension bridges, and underground passages.

liazl: The water castle is only the main attraction which is very well maintained and beautiful. Within the compound, there are many more other historical sites, such as the gates, royal kitchen, tunnels, underground mosque, building on top of a hill, etc. The compound now resided by the locals and the lanes are quite narrow and misleading like a spider web, thus, please follow the map closely. To visit this place, i would advise to spare more time as it will get quite crowded with tourists sometime, and you need to walk a lot to visit those ruins.

Day 2 | Afternoon

After finishing the tour at Taman Sari, you can head to Sonobudoyo Museum, the most worth visiting place around the corner.

This is the better museum in Yogyakarta with various gems and gold Hindu statues. The museum displays collections of Javanese art, including shadow puppets from Wayang shadow puppets, daggers, and batik. There's also a courtyard filled with Indian statues and artefacts from further afield, including superb Balinese carvings.

Reviews from Real Guests:

novita magdalena: The Sonobudoyo Museum, which is located in the city center, is in a strategic location, within the Yogyakarta Cultural Center which has received a lot of attention from various parties, both from within and outside the country. The Sonobudoyo Museum building is a joglo house with the architecture of the Cirebon Kesepuhan Palace Mosque. Designed by Ir. Th. Karsten. The existence of the museum is closely related to a foundation during the Colonial Java Institute in the field of Javanese, Madurese, Balinese, and Lombok cultures as the originator of the establishment of the Sonobudoyo Museum, which was inaugurated on November 6, 1935, by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII with the sign of Candrasengkala "Wooden Winayang Ing Brahmin Buddha". " Sonobudoyo Museum as a provincial museum in the future is expected to be an illustration of the museum's function in terms of service and function optimization, by looking at its potential, so that it will have prospects and opportunities to be further developed and improved, in order to face competition both at the National and International levels.

This beach is located in Wonosari, the county town below Yogyakarta. It takes about 3 hours to drive. You need to rent a car to go there. You will charge 10,000 Indonesian dollars per person to enter. There is almost no garbage on the beach, it is very clean, and the sea water quality is also very good, very blue and clear. In addition, the beach also has a viewing platform, which is very windy and can't be exposed to the sun, so it is very cool. If you love the sea, this is still a beach worth playing.

This elegant and refined temple is located about 3.5 kilometers east of Borobudur, and although it may seem insignificant compared to its extraordinary neighbor, the Borobudur Temple, in its original architecture preserves the oldest statue of all the temples in Java: a The magnificent 3-meter-high Buddha statue has two bodhisattva statues on both sides, Guanyin on the left and Vairapana on the right. Interestingly, the posture of the Buddha statue itself has to be noticed. It is not the common lotus sitting posture, but a Western-style sitting posture, with both feet on the ground. The Gate Post Temple was discovered in 1836, and the elegant reliefs carved on the outer walls of the temple are also among the finest and larger in Indonesian Indo-Javanese art.
