Hotel Okura Amsterdam – the Leading Hotels of the World

Amsterdam Oud Zuid Amsterdam|1.32km from Van Gogh Museum
We decided to splurge on this 5 star hotel for a long anticipated family reunion. Unfortunately the experience was marred by a series of disappointments caused by utterly incompetent hotel staff. When I called ahead on the day of our arrival to request an early check-in the hotel rep. sternly informed me that I would have to pay a 120 Euro charge for the privilege! We are experienced travelers and never have we encountered such a demand. We took our chances regardless and decided to show up 2 hours early. Sure enough, our room was already ready and we were allowed to occupy it at no extra charge. Things really started to go south when a limousine that I had arranged for separate airport pickup of my daughter’s family through the concierge showed up at the airport unequipped with a baby car seat. I had expressly requested this when I booked the service. This was also specified in the booking confirmation sent by email to me by the concierge. The reaction I later got when I complained to the concierge was that I was not charged extra for the baby seat - as if this was the main issue! Furthermore, this was the first time that I was informed of such a charge, as no mention of this had been made in the email confirmation of the limo reservation which I originally received from the concierge. More importantly, what is more concerning is the utter indifference he showed for the safety of a guest’s infant grandchild. All that concerned him was the money angle to the failure. Things soon got worse. When we checked into our room we lifted the bed cover to discover several hairs and multiple red and yellow stains. Unbelievably, the chambermaid had neglected to change the bedsheets. This, in a 5 star hotel! After we called reception, staff was quickly sent to our room to change them. We never heard further from management about this. We later had dinner at Serre restaurant onsite and left the place hungry. The chef seems to focus on presentation and less on the reasonableness of the portions. My wife had a fish main course which was equivalent to 3 forkfuls. The minuscule dessert was pretty to look at but was grossly inadequate even for one person. The restaurant style is a throwback to the old Nouvelle Cuisine school. For the icing on the cake: a voucher for a round of drinks on the house at the rooftop bar that the guest services manager had kindly given me was bungled by the bar staff. When I arrived home I discovered a mysterious charge of 66 Euros by the Twenty-Third Floor Bar. The bar staff set new standards of incompetence in taking my voucher and charging me anyway.I had to call the hotel for credit but I am losing money anyway from the spread in exchange rates used by credit card companies. To be fair, the Superior View room was extremely spacious and comfortable with a magnificent view. The large pool and ample spa facilities were enjoyable and a significant convenience . Also the reception desk personnel were very professional and welco

In the whole hotel we enjoyed it very much. We were only one night. It appears very good.Outside it seems ordinary but inside it really is a girl.Everything reminiscent very much modern art. We had a room in the ground floor, but it had a high window that was very well illuminated inside. You have a cooker and a coffee machine in the room and this is always a good thing for us because it is a service we appreciate especially after long walks. The only fault I can't tell if it was because we were at -1 is that at some point of the night the bathroom smells also importantly discharged. The morning is gradually disappearing because we haven't heard anything at the day when we arrived. The location is not just in the center even if you get 30 minutes walking or you have the tram that is quick. It was a good point for us, however.

This hotel is awesome. The loft house I chose to live in is full of high-tech sinks. There is a TV in the mirror. I can use the whole hotel. It is like a museum full of literary atmosphere. When a gentleman leads me to visit the hotel. And the history of the hotel was first explained by a bank and later became a conservatory. The hotel was renamed as the current hotel. The location is especially great. The National Museum Van Gogh Museum walks for 5 minutes. It has a great seafood walk 2 minutes back to the room and finds the bed to help sleep. The fragrance spray and the weather conditions of the next day will be especially intimate and will choose this hotel.

We had a family room at the hotel for two nights in the UK Easter school holidays and found it to be reasonable. We loved the hotel's location, sandwiches between the Van Gogh Museum area and designer shops. It was close to bars and restaurants too. We had a pleasant welcome and were quickly into our room, which was spacious and appeared to be recently refurbished. The beds were comfortable. Our rat included breakfast, which was a great start to each day. We also have to give a shout out to the lady who single handedly manages the service with a smile on her face - amazing!

Stayed her because of good TripAdvisor ratings, Rick Steves' recommendation, and location so close to the big museums. One block from VanGogh. A few steps up from the street to main floor, no real reception area. Ring the bell and the staff comes to greet you and check you in. We had a room right off that front hall. Breakfast in the basement (-1 level), typical continental with buffet including eggs, bacon, sliced meats and cheese, yogurts and granola, breads, and good coffee. Has a tiny elevator, but winding steps up and down also. Room was lovely, with view onto pedestrian area. Three children's schools on this corner so noise of children at play during the day, but no big deal since you are gone most of the time anyway. Room 12 has a bay window which made people watching easy and fun. Staff was exceptionally helpful. Alexandra and Peter took very good care of us, offering constantly to provide dinner reservations, which were good recommendations. Hotel has a simple button in front hall, push it and a taxi arrives in a couple of minutes. The hotel also has bicycles to rent so you can explore on your own. We were very pleased with this hotel.

If you are staying in Amsterdam and want a quiet hotel in a super convenient location, this is where you want to be. The museumplein is just a couple blocks away, Vondelpark was a short walk. Stops for the #2 and #12 trams that will take you to the center of the city, are a block away. It could not have been a better location. Much quieter than an equivalent hotel on a canal. The hotel itself is charming, the rooms are very comfortable and well appointed. Staff is very helpful and even friendly. The elevator is a bit of a challenge (small and tricky door). We found that we preferred walking upstairs when without luggage, but we were on the first floor. If you are on a higher floor and are not willing to walk, then you will have to wait for a single old-style elevator. There was a standard breakfast selection (eggs, bacon, sausage) served to the table. Yogurt, cereals, fruit and juices were available to serve yourself. We found the coffee here to be the best we had on our trip through The Netherlands and Belgium.

Me and my son booked a twin room. Perfect size for us to crash in after a days sightseeing. Beds super comfy with the biggest pillows. My son also enjoyed the basketball net inside the room. Bathroom a good size too. Quirky decor throughout, super friendly staff and brilliant location for museums, canal boats and trams to get around. Would definitely stay there again as great price for location.
